well what a night weve had! his numbers were coming down then the constant trips to the litter tray started, when he started yowling it was time to phone the vet on call!
hes had a long lasting antibiotic but is going in,in the next few days for them to grow a culture.he as also given a long lasting painkiller.(both were given to me to administer as he went crazy and the vet couldnt get near him.he even went for me which is usual when he gets so detressed at the vets :-( my poor babe.i hate that hes going through all this.hopefully with his numbers lowering it'll help to stop all these complications.he certainly wont be going in on sat now for a fructosimine check and his b12 im hoping il be able to administer myself as i think hes gone through enough tonight!

There"s a problem with getting a culture once Bailey has been on an antibiotic. In all likelihood, you'll get a false reading or at the least, a not entirely accurate reading. What antibiotic was he given?

My boy kitty gets idiopathic (they don't know what causes it) cystitis. It's not caused by bacteria so he doesn't get an antibiotic. Did the vet say Bailey has crystals? My Theo sometimes has crystals when they do a urine test during an episode. For medications my guy gets something to relax urethra spasms and pain medication, usually buprenorphine for 3 days. He's also gotten cerenia shots because it has anti-inflammatory properties.

It order to try to stop it appearing again, I make sure he has a lot of water added to his food, so that he is constantly flushed out. My vet wanted to make sure his urine specific gravity was on the low end to make sure I'm adding enough water. We are also adding glucosamine to his diet - there have been some studies that show it helps the bladder wall. And I'm adding a small pinch of cranberry power to make sure the urine pH is good. The other thing that helps is I've got Feliway plug-ins. They are a diffuser that sends out calming pheremones. My little guy is a semi-feral and apparently the scaredy cats are the ones most likely to get cystitis. I know his first episode was stress related (one week after Neko got diagnosed with diabetes  ) And of course trying to put him on a bit of a diet. When I got him he was a tubby little guy, better now but could lose a little more.

Sending healing vines to Bailey. Good to see those yellows today in spite of all he had to go through. :YMHUG:

thanks for that advice.ive written it down as i (not bailey) go back to vet this morning with a urine sample.it was all abit of a rush last night with him being in pain and having to get the vet on a call out.he suggested him staying over night then sedating him to do a culture before he gave me the antibiotic but i didnt want to leave him there over night as there were no vets there and i knew he wouldnt eat and no one would be there to check his blood (plus he was that stressed he went for the vet.it took us (even me) numerous goes to shut the door to his carrier as he swiped.hes not like this at all at home so i know it mus caue him terrible amounts of distress! so hes going to have to go in,in the day once the antibiotics have worn off.

i bought a feliway diffuser whie i was at the vets last night!

i dont know about bailey being stressed but im a stressed as hell nailbite_smile ! at least ive slept ok last night though.i think through exhaustion! im off to work now but my mums calling both morning and afternoon in between me going in at lunch, to see if hes ok.she cant take his blood but at least if necessary she can ring me out of work.

have a good day you guys and thanks again :YMHUG:

Hello Anna,so sorry to hear of your trauma, hope Bailey is now more comfortable.
SIenne is right about his system having to be cleared of antibiotics to get a accurate test result, check it out with the vet.

And to complicate things further, a sample you get at home isn't sterile. You won't know if the bacteria that could be cultured is from Bailey's urine or the bacterial that's floating around everywhere.

Wendy also has a good point. Many cats have sterile cystitis. It doesn't require antibiotics.

its ok hes booked it in 2weeks after antibiotics has run out for urine to be extracted to do a culture!
hes tested for strauvite crystal regulary as hes suffered with that a few times but hes drinking more so he seems to flush those out! the antibiotics do seem to work for a few weeks, maybe over a month or so so the vets seems to think its because of the glucose in his urine.it has been exceptionally high until this week!

his numbers are lowering so hopefully these kind of complications will become less.im scared to get too positive in case I come crashing down! hes a lot more comfortable today and his currently snuggled next to me snoring cat_pet_icon
