Happy with this start! Hope everyone has a wonderful Friday!

Gizmo is so happy and is feeling so good. He is active, interactive, bright eyed and loving. I haven't heard him purr this much in so long! His appy is good. He is finishing his fudz (with the exception of the +8.5 snack occasionally), with little to no hesitation. It is making mama bean very, very happy.
 
Well, shoot. I was really trying to get to work on time today. I guess I will hang out another hour or so. I truly think he would be ok - especially given the new lower dose but I just can't justify it. The other thing I thought about doing was adding some MC to his +2.5 snack.

How many cycles after a dose decrease is another decrease given/taken (I assume 6)? There really isn't anything I have read on this or on a regulated cat decreases - as far as the protocol. It is kind of a grey area.
 
Besides earning reductions for dropping below 50, or 40 depending on the protocol, he can earn a reduction if he stays in normal numbers for a week.

Is that documented anywhere? I have seen it said before - just never read it in the TR sticky or in the actual Protocol.

Exactly! I and so many peeps resist bringing the units up and I did such a disservice to Bubba holding on to a dose that wasn't doing it for him and he got so stuck and developed ketones after dental surgery and his eye removal. Surgery increases the chance of ketones and he had 2 in a 6 week period. If I only knew what I knew now. :rolleyes: We learn by our mistakes.

Well, I was referring to the fur shots but, yeah, I am guilty. I think too many of us are. I think it is hard to be aggressive and then the learning curve but too many hold the dose hoping/wishing for greens when we should be following the protocol more tightly. It isn't easy working full time either. I am so fortunate that my work allows me your work from home on the mornings I need to, especially lately.

Here's where to find documentation for reducing the dose if kitty hasn't "earned" a reduction by dropping below 50 (human meter) or 68 (pet-specific meter):

When the cat regularly has its lowest BGs in the normal range of a healthy cat and stays under 100 mg/dl overall for at least one week, attempt to reduce the dose.

The TR Protocol is an aggressive method in itself. The modified version of the protocol is slightly more aggressive. Let's keep all our kitties in the Lantus & Levemir ISG safe by suggesting and taking appropriate reductions.
  • If kitty drops below 40 (long term diabetic) or 50 (newly diagnosed diabetic) reduce the dose by 0.25 unit. If kitty has a history of not holding reductions well or if reductions are close together... sneak the dose down by shaving the dose rather than reducing by a full quarter unit. See additional notes in the next paragraph about drops into the 20s and 30s. Alternatively, at each newly reduced dose... try to make sure kitty maintains numbers in the normal range for seven days before reducing the dose further.

  • reduction *earned* when the cat regularly has its lowest BGs in the normal range of a healthy cat (50 - 80 mg/dL) and stays under 100 mg/dl overall for at least one week and following TR.
