Last Night:
338 PMPS
373 +4.25

I got home sooo late from work, yesterday. I wanted to up J.D.'s dose, but I was having a hard time getting the callipers on the number I wanted while in a hurry. So his shot was really late.

He is doing fine. Tail still pulled in, off and on. We leave for the vet in about 20 minutes, so I guess I better get the kits out for a walk.

Wish us luck with this blood pressure check, that it's not too elevated from the long car ride and vet stress, and that he just needs his anal glands expressed.

Re: 04/27 J.D. AMPS 301 vet apt. at +1.5

Good luck with the vet visit, we'll be keeping our fingers and paws crossed for J.D. Hope his BP is not too high, and it's just his anal glands that need to be expressed.

Re: 04/27 J.D. AMPS 301 vet apt. at +1.5

Dyana,

Hope the vet visit goes well and he just needs his glands expressed! Be safe!

Good luck with the vet visit. I hope everything goes well and J.D. is not too stressed from the car ride.

The doctor said J.D.'s anal glands were clean, so he didn't need them expressed. I asked him what about the tail thing, and he said maybe he had some skeletal issues and asked me to confirm I was giving him Adequan, and I said I had just re-started it last Saturday.

I brought some fresh urine with me (from +1), and his USG was 1.021 (last month it was 1.020).
The doctor is running a "Urinalysis, Complete with sed, and UPC" and will call me with the results within a week?

He said his blood pressure was fine:

SYS, DIA, MAP
183, 102, 159
190, 101, 145
188, 92, 140
184, 116, 134
184, 110, 162

But, I his last blood pressure (last October?) was:

SYS DIA MAP
169, 98, 132
164, 93, 137
166, 75, 134
172, 73, 149

The doctor said they don't worry about it unless it's over 200.

J.D. ate lots of freeze dried salmon treats while we were at the vet. I have never seen him eat anything while at a vet before. That was unique.

J.D. ate his 2nd Breffis when we got home at +3, and is currently hanging around the house somewhere. Oh, there he is, he's in his doggy bed, taking a cat snooze.

Hi Dyana, I'm glad the doctor said not to worry about J.D.'s BP! Have a lovely weekend :-D

Re: 04/27 J.D. AMPS 301, +1.5 271 at vet, +3 243, +4.5 232

Hi Dyana

Sounds like a good vetty report. Interesting about the BP because my vets said absolute top number in the clinic should be 160 which is consistent with Cornell Univ Hypertension. The top of the normal range for cats is about 125 so the 160 takes into account white coat syndrome.

I'm not sure I understand why vets are so reticent to put cats on BP meds. Gus had numbers similar to JDs and he is on amlodipine with no side effects and his BP is really nice and normal now. He's on a very low dose. High BP can cause other health issues.

Not to scare you with all this but I just wonder if you took some info to your vet, if he might change his mind.

On the calipers....I was also zeroing mine out before every draw and then resetting it on the dose. When Zeners Mom, Liz, was here, she said she just leaves hers on the current dose because then it is consistent each time and, it's faster...of course. So I've started doing that as well. She's an engineer so I trust her with this kind of stuff

Have a great day!

A new reference to bookmark. Thank you for that. Might need that some day....

Glad the overall report is good. Paws crossed that the urinalysis is good too.
Happy Caturday!

The vet office just called me because they didn't charge me the right amount and wanted to charge me more..

I told them to fax the results of the urinalysis to our regular vet. I'll try calling our regular vet next week, and see what he says about the blood pressure. I just wouldn't want his blood pressure to go too low, because he sleeps so deeply. I can't tell you how many times I've slowly woken him up when he was a rag doll. That's scary.

Anyway, I left a copy of the blood pressure results with our regular vet's office on the way home from the other vet, as I needed to pick up some cyproheptadine. They had some with an expiration of 08/2015 Yay!
Maybe, I'll print out the link you sent me (Thanks!) and fax that to my regular vet, tomorrow when we're at work, so we can discuss it.

Looks like J.D.'s going to be Mr. Yellow, today. Although, +4 is just about the onset of Levemir.

I did ask the doctor we saw today, again "What about his tail?" and he said I could give him Buprenex. I asked him if my supply of bupe (a vial or two from April of 2012 when he was diagnosed with cronic pancreatitis, and 3 leftover pre-filled syringes from his dental in January 2013) would still be good, and he said they would. The vials have 1.50ml in them and are in green bottles kept in a cardboard box with other meds, I'm not currently using, and the three pre-filled syringes have 0.37mls each, and are kept in the dark brown plastic bag they came in, in the vegetable bin of my refrigerator.
The doctor said I could give him .2ml of bupe when his tail acts weird. I told the doctor, he only does it for like 5 minutes and then stops. I wish I knew what caused it.
He did have an injury when he was like 5 or 6 years old, and I found him at my front door with his back legs not working. The vet that saw him thought either he had been hit by a car or had a cat fight. The odds of him being hit by a car where I lived at the time were slim, and there was a feral? mean cat that hung out on the property, so I always blamed that mean cat as he had caused two other vet visits from beating up my cats. After that last incident, my cats learned to only go outside on leashes, after spending hundreds on the three vet visits from injurys suffered from fights with that mean cat, and at least one if not both (I can't quite remember now) were from slashes across the butt end of the spine. J.D. had to live for a month in my bathroom until his back legs worked again. Maybe, that has something to do with it. When I try to Google "cat pulls tail between legs" I get results for children pulling cats tails, and the body language of cats and dogs :?

What are Gus' numbers at the vets, now? How often would I have to go back to check to make sure the meds are working properly? I would want to go back the next day nailbite_smile and the next day and the next.

I do what Liz does. I just set the dose once, and carefully store the calipers in the box they came in.
Last night I had troubles because I was in a hurry because I was so late getting home from work, and was trying to set a new dose and kept going too far one way or the other :-|

Re: 04/27 J.D. AMPS 301, +1.5 271 at vet, +3 243, +4.5 232

Rosy was having tail between her legs yesterday. When I tried to touch her tail. She avoided & hide. I suspected anal gland infection or constipation. She's not finishing her meal which is rare. I did an anema at home but got nothing.
Took her to vet where the vet said she got a very hard poo inside tummy. Did the anema again. Rosy released a large pile of pressie & she' s ok now.
Did JD have pressie recently? With the seasonal change, hair shedding could have caused a bit of stool stuck inside body.

Thanks for your response Helen. J.D. pretty much goes every day, and the prezzies are not too loose and on the occasions when I have taken a paper towel and squeezed them to see it they were too hard, they were not.

It is definitely shedding time. I have been brushing J.D. and getting lots of hair out. He doesn't do a good bath, just his face, front legs and chest, so he rarely get hairballs...unlike Ginger who gets them all the time all year long :-|

J.D. has had his bouts with constipation. I was discussing that with the vet today, because he suggested bupe and J.D. was getting constipated with that. He asked if I was still giving Lactulose and I said no, that baby food squash really helped him out when he had his dental and was on the bupe TID for a week. He mentioned Miralax and I said I had a problem with that as J.D. wouldn't eat it in his food and Ginger would eat it for him. I said I found Lactulose to work much quicker (like in an hour or so) and I could give it as needed.
In the past, our regular vet has said that J.D. is weak in the back end (well actually, for years he's said that he's had "creaky joints" back there), and that maybe I should give him lactulose every other day, to help him to go, that maybe he is having trouble going. But, yesterday, when I spoke to him (our regular vet) and told him that I was getting J.D.'s blood pressure checked today, I told him that I was going to have his anal glands checked again. I said that after he expressed his anal glands in March that all symptoms (of the tail pulling inward) had disappeared and they had started again on Wednesday. Our regular vet had responded to me, this time, that maybe his stools were too soft  Are they too soft or too hard? :? Make up your mind. They are always the same. Squeezable, pliable, but not too squishy. J.D. gave the good doctor today, a sample on the exam table, after having his temperature taken twice (97.4 by the vet tech, and normal 101 or something like that by the vet) and having his butt and anal glands prodded, and I had the doctor check the consistancy of the prezzie as he cleaned it up off the table, and it was the same as it always is.

J.D. has had a lot lot of freeze dried salmon treats today (both at the vet and at home) and he has also had a bunch of steak, and those things (at least the steak) I think can help to stop him up some.
I'll be sure to give him some baby food squash with dinner tonight.

I love poo condos. :-|

Maybe try googling nerve damage + cat tail
That might get you more to research.

This one talks about many possibilities.

Thanks for the link Rhiannon. I'll try doing a search like that. I read the link you provided, but J.D. does this thing with his tail sporadically. And of course does not do it at all while at the vets.

Re: 04/27 J.D. AMPS 301, +1.5 271 at vet, +3 243, +4.5 232

I think nerve damage doesn't necessarily mean the symptoms are all the time.
It could be sporadic and come and go.... people with sciatic nerve pain aren't always constantly in pain... it flares up and down.

Maybe pooping could be a trigger....
it would probably take a lot of note taking on your part to find what happens to trigger it. You needed more to do , didn't you?
I would think that it could increase with age.... doesn't everything?

Re: 04/27 J.D. AMPS 301, +1.5 271 at vet, +3 243, +4.5 232

Dyana,

Glad the anal glands were good but wish they could have given you a more definitive answer on the tail issue. Glad the vet wasn't concerned on the bp but still, based on your previous records there is a change. Glad all is basically well and wishing you all a great day!

Jo

Exciting day so far Dyana....what are your plans for this evening?
Glad his glands were okay (but sorry that the tail issue is not resolved.....)
Also glad he enjoyed his salmon today....hope the rest of your day goes well...hugs to you all!!

Re: 04/27 J.D. AMPS 301, +1.5 271 at vet, +3 243, +4.5 232

Gus's bp at the vet is now 120-140. We check it every three months. The vet is very happy with those numbers.

I can't remember but I think he was on the lowest dose for about two weeks and then we rechecked. I would start low!!!! Vets always want to start too high. Even if JD was started at the very lowest dose, hopefully it would help a little bit and then you could slowly increase. That's what I love about my vet....she is of the "start very low" mentality.

Oh yeah...it is a pain to change the calipers when you change dose.....

When did you go for his first re-check after starting the drugs?

I gave J.D. some R at +8 and it didn't do much. I think my R is toast. It expired last month and I left it out for 2 or 3 days. I called my local grocery store pharmacy for a price for Humlin R and it was $84. I then called Walmart where I have to run now before they close, and they have a ReliOn brand of R for $25. I need to pick that up and some syringes and some Ketone Test Strips as mine expired 2 weeks ago, and then it's bedtime for me, already :( as I have to be up at 3:30 tomorrow morning to leave for work at 4:30am.

I hope everyone has a good night.

Re: 04/27 J.D. + 6 218, +8 379, PMPS 331

Dyana,

I just read J.D.`s condo. About his blood pressure, please just keep an eye on him. I had no prior symptoms with my cat whatsoever. It does look like his blood pressure may be creeping up? Like I said before I only noticed that Andy`s pupils were dilated and would not go back to normal.
Wishing the best for J. D.

Terri

Re: 04/27 J.D. AMPS 301, +1.5 271 at vet, +3 243, +4.5 232

Hi Dyana!
Hope you can figure out J.D.'s tail thing. It must be frustrating. Glad that his vet appointment went pretty well. P.S. I picked something up for the airport for next years reunion. Have a great time this year! Wish I could go......

I have most of J.D.'s things packed and we'll be headed to work in about 20 minutes.

I gave him some Bupe at +2.5.

He's going to think we're going to the same vet again as we did yesterday, as it is near my work.

I got a bunch of pictures last night of the two kitties licking each other's faces :)

I'll be posting today's condo, much later this afternoon, when we get home from tbp.
