Happy Easter Everyone  Jasmine is on 1 unit BID as of yesterday and I still am not seeing a drop in her numbers after her shots. Her numbers do not seem to be going down like a typical curve??? She is drinking water in enormous amounts. It seems like every 10 minutes she is at her fountain. Just :? :? why her numbers are not coming down a bit? Have a great Easter everyone!!!!

First, these are good numbers. I realize you want to see green but Jasmine has been back on insulin for only 12 days. Also, remember that Lantus has a characteristically "flat" curve and that's what you're seeing. It just may take more insulin to get Jasmine's numbers into an overall lower range. I'd also encourage you to not base your expectations on how Jasmine responded last time.

I also want to put this out for your consideration. It looks like you're feeding Purina D/M. It is low carb -- 7%. Have you given any thought to maybe trying a food that's a little lower in carbs and a better quality food? D/M is primarily animal by-products. It is not "muscle meat" which is a preferred diet for cats. If you've never read the ingredients of D/M, you might want to. Frankly, Fancy Feast is better quality and costs a lot less than D/M. You could be feeding Jasmine a premium canned food for what you're paying (or less) for the prescription food.

Hello Sienne, Thank you so much! I know for sure I do need to develop patience with Jasmine and allow her body time to adjust & respond. I would love to change her diet. I want her to have the very best I can get. I have been looking around here locally to see what my options are. I am in NS, Canada. We have Fancy Feast here but not the Fancy Feast Classic. I see most go with the Fancy Feast Classic that give Fancy Feast. Are Fancy Feast pates any good to give? I can get them around here just not the classic.

I would suggest checking with some of the Canadian members. I think the labeling is different in Canada. I'm pretty sure that the FF pate varieties are what we call "Classic" in the US. Let me see if I can round up some folks to lend a hand with food.

Hi Jodi,
You are correct that the Fancy Feast Classic does not exist here in Canada. The Fancy Feast Pate varieties are the ones you want. I use Chicken Feast (red label), Tender Liver and Chicken Feast (yellow label), and Turkey and Giblets Feast (green label). I also use one Friskies Pate - Chef's Dinner. I believe that other Friskies Pate varieties would be acceptable as well. I know that President's Choice makes flavors that are equivalent to the Fancy Feast pate varieties. Others use them with great success, but I have not tried them. Stick with pate types. Avoid anything that is chunks and gravy, marinated, sliced, or contains wheat gluten.

Wellness grain free wet food is really good - it is not cheap but it is a good one - any pet store should have it.

Hi Jodi
I have not posted in your condo before however it was brought to my attention that you
are unsure about the FF here in Canada.

The American cans says classic but our Canadian Cans just say Pate.
I just picked up some cans at walmart yesterday and the chicken ones say
Chicken Feast - Festin de Poulet (pinky/salmony colour can)
Pate

Turkey & Giblets Feast-Festin de Dinde et d'abattis (lime green can)
Pate

You won't find any of the beef flavours though, just turkey, liver, chicken and the fish ones.
So any of the FF cans that say Pate on them are good to go. That is all I use here when I run out of my US stash.

I'm on my way to church now so posting from mobile. Friskies Chef dinner is also LC

You say she is drinking lots of water still ...when did you get a blood work done on her? What were her renal values like CRE and BUN also her PHOS?
Drinking /peeing lots is not only due to diabetes but also CRF (chronic renal failure)

Will check your condo later

Thank you to everyone for helping me figure out the Fancy Feast food dilemma

@ Claudia - Jasmine had blood done January 29th. CREA was 142 mol/L (normal range) BUN/CREA 18 and PHOS 1.45 mmol/L (normal range)

Hi Jodi!
In Canada, we actually have a good selection of grocery store brands that are low carb. Compliments brand (Sobeys/IGA) and President's Choice (SuperStore, LobLaws) foods have good choices. One big bonus is that the PC and Our Compliments cost less than FF, and several of them have better ingredients! There are several of the store flavours that are low carb- like duck or beef and liver- which FF doesn't even carry. (And yes, the "pate" FF are the ones you want. You can also use the pate Friskies - Chef's Dinner, Turkey and Giblets, and Chicken Dinner are favourites here.)

Janet has added a section of PC foods to her international food list if you want to check it out. The Sobeys ones aren't on yet because we can't get the "as fed" analysis of the food. Also, WalMart makes a small tin (85g, same as FF) called "Special Kitty" and LOTS of those are also low carb, and cheaper. Janet has quite a few of those listed. Just make sure you are checking her non-US charts.

If they are not in Janet's list, the next best thing is to label read- avoid obvious grains and other carbs (potatoes, peas) and things called "food starch".. which I assume is cornstarch, but the "starch" part says "stay away" to a sugarcat. The Friskies pates do have some brewers rice, but it's far down on the ingredient list, and never affected my cats' BGs, but obviously watch for that, too.

Good luck!

Thanks Karen & Everyone! Jasmine will be very pleased to have a little more variety/flavour in her diet than the same ol' same ol' that she has been eating for over a year now while getting a better product  Thanks again.

Walmart Special Kitty Turkey and Giblet worked amazing for Maverick's BG. The FF/PC version caused a bump in his. Also I believe Liver and Chicken is low carb and some fish based varieties. Maverick was very picky though. The Non US Binky's/Janets list shows the special Kitty line - the 3oz cans not the 5.5oz.
