I'm running low on the 28 gauge lancets I've been using and need some advice.
When Daph was first diagnosed, I bought the AlphaTrak meter which came with a lancet pen. Because I was not successful with the pen, I resorted to doing the prick myself. I feel like I am causing her a lot of pain and I wonder a. if people feel the pens are less painful; and b. if people who do a manual prick use 30 gauge lancets. Thanks for any thoughts you can share. :cat:

I also started exactly the same... I now freehand with 30gauge and keep some 28 ones on hand in case of low numbers and I need a bigger sample.
Also, to save a couple of pennies, I buy the CVS brand or Walgreens brand of lancets.

Hi Karen, I have always used the 28 gauge lancets freehand. If you can get blood out of the 30 gauge lancets then get them. Tyler never feels anything when I test him with the 28 gauge .The higher number on the lancets the bigger the hole

Edit sorry the higher the number on the lancets the smaller the hole it will make

Hi Diane. I thought that the higher the number, the finer the gauge...?
I've been using 28 and she flinches and jerks. That just kills me.

Ive only used 28g. it varies how much blood I get. Higher numbers usually yield more blood. I dont use the lancet pen.

From what I've read, even though this is counter-intuitive, the larger numbers are smaller gauge and draw less blood. Here's something I found:

"The lancets you get from us are 30g. While it seems a bit backward, the smaller the number, the thicker the needles are. Even with a thicker gauge like a 28g, the needles are still incredibly small, and after one use the tip begins to dull and bend."
