Hi everyone

I didn't start a condo yesterday as my friend has lost her daughter suddenly. It is just the most shocking thing for everyone and heartbreaking. If possible if you could light a candle for Rebecca to light her way. She was only a teenager and had such an affinity with animals and especially her cat Honey who will be waiting for her.

I did still manage to get some readings and remi has stayed between 80 and 100 on his 0.1 dose. The biggest problem we currently have is the burping that he does after he eats. I can't work out if he is taking in air as he eats, the new tablets have ruduced the strength of a stomach value or since he was sick the other night his gullet was irritated and is inflamed and has set up a cycle of burping. Either way. It is causing some chest tightness.

Re: 04/12 remi AMPS 90

Sarah, so sorry about your friend's loss. :YMHUG: It's horrible for a parent to lose a child. Sending vines of comfort her way and light for Rebecca to find her way.

Remi's numbers are looking good on this dose. If the burping continues, I'd have a chat with the vet. Any chance it's tied to trying new food?

Re: 04/12 remi AMPS 90

Sarah, I'm so very sorry for your friend. How devastating! I hope Remi stops burping.

Re: 04/12 remi AMPS 90

I am so sorry for the loss of your friend's daughter as well, that truly is a parent's worst nightmare.

I agree with Wendy about asking your vet- has Remi been tested for allergies or does he have digestive issues maybe?

Re: 04/12 remi AMPS 90

I'm sorry for your friends loss. How very sad.

Remi is looking so good. I'm glad of that.

Thanks Dyana, Ruth, Tiff and Wendy for your comments and everyone else who stopped by my post. I know I haven't been very active in anyone's else condo's over the last few days.

Remi didn't burp again today until tonight and he his breathing was good until he did. I have been trying to work out why sometimes he burps and sometimes he doesn't with the vet for a long time now and thinking back two years this was one of the reasons I ended up switching him back off wet food because it got so bad. We have tried various things since then but nothing much seems to work. Just before his diagnosis we were going to try a new drug that increases the 'pressure (not the right word) in his valves (again not the right word but can't think of what it is at the moment) to reduce this reflux.

Having said all that I was watching him eat tonight and he seems to make a lot of noise as he does, like he is sucking in air. He has also taken to joyfully cleaning himself afterwards and as he does it again you can hear lots of air being sucked in and you can sometimes hear it going down The wrong hole and he sort of splutters. I wonder if there is some sort of weak valve somewhere? My plan for tomorrow morning is to prevent him from cleaning himself after food and drinking too much water.

Is there a certain shape, size, composition of eating bowl that is better than another. I currently use a glass bowl that has gently sloping sides ie not a cat bowl but a human dessert bowl. I don't know why but I decided on this a couple of years ago. It is raised slightly off the ground.

One good thing I noticed tonight was that when he peed in this littler tray it was with great strength and gusto. Like he used to. Not just sat in his litter. It might have just been a one off but it shows me that it is still there and his strength can be got back if I can just get his potassium levels up abit more.

Hi Sarah! I'm so sorry for your friend's loss. That is so tragic.

Does Remi eat too fast sometimes? I have read that cats can get the hiccups from eating too fast/taking in too much air while they eat.

Thankyou Deanna

He may well do, he certainly eats with a lot of noise and gusto. Besides my mums cats I don't have anything to compare him too. I would love to know if there is something wrong with his physiology. How would I best slow him down?

I forgot to reply to the other posts. He does have IBD, my vet has classed him as an allergic cat. He hasn't had tests as vet didn't think they were very accurate. The vet has mentioned that some tablets can lessen the strength of his tummy valves, not sure if it was in relation to one particular one he was taking. Over the years he has had do many issues and so many tablets it all seems to merge into a blur.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Sarah. that's heartbreaking, especially with a teenager. I'm glad your friend has you to go through this with her.

A couple of ideas for Remi - i have no idea if these would help or not, but i think they'd be easy and worth trying.

I just read something recently about feeding a cat off a plate instead of using a bowl, that some cats do better with plates. I tried to slow punkin's eating down by adding a golf ball to his food. yes, a golf ball. the idea is that he has to go a little slower to work around it. there are feeding dishes that have ridges in them that are supposed to slow a cat down. I think i'd save this idea for last, only because if he's sucking in air, adding obstacles might actually increase that. I don't know.

Maybe raising the level of his plate so that he's not leaning so far over to eat. People do that for dogs with arthritis - you might be able to put a couple of bricks down to raise it a few inches and set the plate on top of the bricks. Or figure out something else creative. That might change the angle of his head and esophagus and might help.

One of my cats, Frodo, is always starving and he eats much slower than my other cats. I feed him in a room alone so he gets to eat enough. I've noticed that when he grooms he kinda slurps and makes a ton of noise. I've been wondering if he's got some physical mouth defect that makes him eat/bathe differently than the normal cat. I've had 7 cats and he's the only one that you could even hear grooming. He's also the slowest eater. Just thinking out loud.

Thanks Julie for your comments

I must say I have never heard of putting a golf ball in the food. I think remi would think I had gone mad :-D . I will definitely try the plate. That way as you suggest I can raise it. It is raised slightly but without sides I can go higher.

That's really interesting about frodo. Until yesterday I hadn't even registered that remi was making so much noise but to me I almost sounds that his body is getting confused about what goes up his nose, what goes down his windpipe and what goes down to his stomach. This I think also ties in with the fact I can hear the breathing going through his nose even though his chest is better and he gets inhaled steroid so you would think his nose would get the best hit. Having said all that I have tried to put 2+2 together before and come up with 5 so I might be barking up the wrong tree but what you have said Julie makes sense. I will email my vet, the poor guy. :-D

Cheers

Sarah
