04/07 ~ Jasmine PMPS 106.2, +6 - 43.2 Advice?

Hi all! I started Jasmine off this morning with no insulin as her AMBG was 59.4. She maintained good numbers throughout the day. This evening, 5 pm, her PMPS was 106.2 so I gave her few drops of insulin. 6 hours later her BG was 43.2 - SCARY :? Not sure if she should be getting insulin at these numbers? I am thinking not!

I am agreeing with you, & you should feed some low carb or medium carb food, maybe some karo syrup, or a small bit of honey on Jasmine's gums-IF she doesnt come up--Please come on the board for advice BEFORE you give the cat a shot...Actually, if you hadnt given a shot, she may have come down or surfed by herself..have you gotten any dosing advice from the advisors here??--
Please post & test Jasmine before you go to sleep & post the number==OK?

Jodi,

When a newly diagnosed cat drops below 50, usually it is time to try a dose reduction. Since you're only giving a drop or two anyway, that means it's time to try no insulin and see how that goes. What do you think?

Here's what you do:

Test at your normal AMPS and PMPS times. Feed multiple small meals throughout the day as much as possible (small meals are less likely to overwhelm a newly functioning pancreas).

Grab some spot checks whenever you can, at different times of day. If she is green, all is definitely well. If she is blue, feed a small meal and test again after about 3-4 hours. If her number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then her pancreas is working!

Post every day so we can monitor your progress and see if any tweaks are needed. It is not unusual for cats to get lots of blue during their trial, especially at first. Don't panic and don't shoot unless we tell you to.

After 14 days of no insulin, we have a party!

Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens, we just give her the support she needs. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.

Good luck!

Congrats to you and Jasmine!

Tomorrow morning, instead of listing Jasmine's test as AMPS, since there is no pre-shot, list your test result as AMBG. Same for the evening (PMBG). Also note the day -- OTJ Trial Day 1 and keep counting until Day 14.

Good luck

And Jodi, it's April, not June.

Thank you everyone for the advice, we greatly appreciate it :-D I will keep you all posted. Today is day #1 of Jasmine's OTJ trial. I will be checking her BG just before bed time and will be anxious again to see where she is at in the morning.

Congratulations! and good luck with the trial. We could have another April graduate from training school. party_cat

Smokey's glad to have another girl going through this, she was feeling kind of out numbered by the boys

BTW: If you put it in your post title everyone can come celebrate :-D

Thanks Melanie! This site is amazing, I wish I had known of it when Jasmine was 1st diagnosed. Keeping fingers crossed that Jasmine's trial will go well :-D
