Hi all. I was shocked when I took Skipper's BG tonight and it was 105! Actually, the first reading was 103, and I took it again to be sure. It's NEVER been this low. Only thing I can think of is that he hadn't had dry food for about 24 hours. My notes from the vet said if his BG was under 250 to give him 1 unit less of Lantus, so I gave him 2. I'm going to watch him carefully tonight to make sure he doesn't go hypo.

This is so strange b/c his BG was pretty high all weekend, and to have decent readings today was very unexpected. We began Lantus 3/14, so it's been 11 days. Is this normal?

Thanks!
Beth and Skipper

wow!

Whenever we shoot our lowest ever number, we ask that you get a +1 and +2 so you can see what direction this cycle is going. He has probably been dropping all day, and you don't want him to keep dropping all night too. ;-) So please get a +1 and post it here. We'll be watching for it.

Losing the dry food can definitely have this effect. You're going to need to step up the testing so you can be sure he is safe. For some cats, removing the dry food can cause a pretty dramatic decrease in their insulin needs.

hi beth!

just want to second what libby is saying - you can have a significant change from getting rid of the dry food. you don't have a lot of data on your spreadsheet to be able to tell much about skipper's response to the lantus, so we'll be watching to see what happens in the next few hours.

please update your subject line as you get tests so someone can pop in and give you advice. we want to make sure skipper stays safe. be prepared to get some tests in tonight.

do you have plenty of test strips?

Re: 03/25 Skipper: AMPS 324; PMPS 105!; +2 122

Thanks for the help, all. This is why I post here! You all are so helpful!

I just checked it at +2:15 and it was 122. I'll check it again before bed. I'll make sure he has food in his bowl before bed also, as I close him and my other cat in the basement at night so I can get some sleep (he likes to bang on miniblinds all night long).

I bought a new container of strips last weekend so I'm good.

we don't know when skipper's nadir is yet - so please get another test at +3, or at least by +4. if he were my cat, i would check hourly until he was coming up, unless he gets down around 70, then i'd test every half hour. you want to keep him safe and he may need you to give him higher carbs than normal if he gets low.

i'm not trying to scare you, but when you don't have experience, how would you know if someone doesn't tell you?

i'll look back for you, looks like in about half an hour from now.

Re: 03/25 Skipper: AMPS 324; PMPS 105! +3 113

PM +3 check 113. I just gave him some dry DM food because I'm worried it will keep dropping.
