ruben has been on lantus since october and i was just wondering when you know things are starting to level out?
he was at 150 at +5 but 238 at +6 (he did have some food) so if the ideal is between 50 and 100 or so and he gets close to 100 for only about an hour, when will things level off to the point that a lower number remains consistent for several hours time? that is the goal, correct>? thanks.
ps: i have not updated his condo #s since I just returned from vacation and they were not taken.

Well, you sort of answered part of your own question... Ruben's number went higher after eating. That's normal.

When he gets to his 'best' dose (whatever that may be) he will get into the normal range and stay within that range for longer and longer periods of time. Without seeing your SS I can't really say much else. Some kitties find the right dose quickly and for others it is a longer process - it is almost impossible to predict how long it will take to find the 'magical dose'. But yes, that is the goal to get a dose that helps the kitty to become regulated, healthier and happy.

Even if a kitty is regulated his BG numbers go up a little after eating. So the 'leveling' out you are looking for will happen when Ruben is in the 'normal' BG ranges from using insulin or from the pancreas healing and producing its own insulin. So even after a food spike the kitty's BG can return to normal ranges... either from the exogenous insulin or from the pancreas's natural insulin. He needs to work up to his best dose though. Step by step.

I hope that made a little sense, it is very late for me and I may be babbling.

Best of luck for Ruben to find his 'right' dose soon so he can get in the normal range and stay there for longer periods of time.

thank you = that was very helpful. i wonder if he is not staying in the lower numbers for very long if it makes sense to up the insulin just a bit and see how that works. thoughts?

thanks again...I am also perplexed because today at +4 he was at 149, at +5, he was at 130 and at +7, he was at 365!
that is a quick bump isn't it to go from 130 to 365 in 2 hours? again, he did have some food..but shouldn't the lantus keep him fairly low for at least a few hours?

Hi Sue, now that I see your SS, I would say that Ruben is bouncing from the pretty blues he had earlier. His liver isn't used to seeing those good numbers in the 100's and thinks his 'normal' BG should be 300+. So it panics and sends extra glucose into his system to raise the BG.

Ruben and his liver need to learn a new normal, the real normal... not one in the 300's. You keep at it with treatment and perhaps more insulin so Ruben will keep getting the lower numbers and after a while the liver understands not to panic and will stop over-reacting.

He will clear this bounce and get to the blue 100's again. The more he sees the lower numbers the more the liver will recognize Ruben is not in danger and therefore not send out more glucose. It is hard to say how long this 'training' will take. Some kitties learn fast and others need more time.

Hang in there.
