Furball was happy & purry this morning. I'm hoping she'll slide down and give me some blue today.

MC is feeling better this morning. She had no interest in the baby food I tried to get her to eat, but ate some of her normal food. The vet gave me Bupe for her and said to give her 3cc three times a day for 5 to 7 days. Does this seem like too much? How do I tell if it's too much for her? Thanks.

ETA: They also told me to give MC the Bupe at 5PM last night and then at 10PM when I went to sleep so she'd have some throughout the night. I'm not sure what times I need to give it to her. If I count the 10PM that could be 4 times a day. How long should I wait between each dose?

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=281 Bupe ?

I've heard it comes in different strengths or concentrations. J.D. was on bupe for one week. Although I did end up halving the dose. I halved the dose because J.D. was walking so wobbily that I was afraid of him falling while walking and especially if he tried to jump up and down from furniture. I think I usually try the recommended dose and if it's too much, then lessen it. You'll be home to watch her?

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=281 Bupe ?

Dyana, thanks. I'll be home to watch her through Monday. I took Monday off from work to keep an eye on her. I'm confused about what times I need to give the Bupe too.

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=281 Bupe ?

I'm going btb for a while. This has been a rough week. My sleep is still off. I think MC will be okay for a little while.

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=281 Bupe ?

I'm going btb too.
As far as the timing, you just have to figure out what time every 8 hours is or would works best for you: for instance
8:00am, 4:00pm, and 12:00am,
10:00am, 6:00pm, and 2:00am,
12:00pm, 8:00pm, and 4:00am,
2:00pm, 10:00pm, and 6:00am,
or whatever.

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=281 Bupe ?

Hope Furball slides down today and you see some blues and greens. Glad to hear that MC is feeling better, good luck with the bupe.

Have a good weekend,
Kathie

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=281 Bupe ?

I found the following info on bupe:

It is typically administered at doses of 10-30mcg/kg applied to the oral mucosa (inside the cheek pouch) every 8 hours for up to 5 days (many cats experience anorexia after 5 days of therapy with buprenorphine). The commercially available 300mcg/ml solution for injection (Buprenex) works well for buccal administration with most cats receiving volumes of approximately 0.066ml/kg (e.g. 0.33ml for the average 5kg cat). The duration is 4 - 12 hours depending on the type of pain.

What someone here a while back noted is that larger doses tend to give you greater duration.

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=281 Bupe ?

Dyana and Sienne, thanks for the information on Bupe. That helps. It sounds like I gave her too much last night, but she seems find this morning. The bottle says the Bupe is 0.3 MG/ML. I wonder since I gave her a dose at 5AM and her last dose was at 10PM if I need to wait an extra hour before I give her next dose since that was only 7 hours between doses. I don't want her to be in pain, but I don't want to overdose her. She got two doses last night (5PM and 10PM) with only 5 hours between them. Any thoughts?

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=281 Bupe ?

When Gabby's gotten bupe, it was prescribed as a twice a day dose. I'd try to stick to giving the dose every 8 hrs although it looks like it can be prescribed anywhere from 2 - 4 times a day.

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=281 Bupe ?

Morning Carla ~O) ~O) ~O)

Looking good today Furball, a nice sunny yellow. I will hope for Blues for you today.

I am sorry I missed MC's dental yesterday. It is good to read that all went well. Good luck too with the bupe. I've used it before with Mannie. Vet prescribed it 3X/day, .1- .3ml's per dose. I elected the .2ml's, and watched to see how it affected him, and if that was too much. It was as if he was stoned: staring, non active, etc, so I lowered it, and had a happier more active kitty. If it were me I'd pick a time that works, then give the bupe every 8 hours. I eventually went to twice a day with Mannie too, and he did fine with that.

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=281 Bupe ?

I am so glad to hear the dental went well! Good luck with the medicine, and have a great day!

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=281 Bupe ?

Hi Carla,

I have Bupe on hand, but I haven't had to administer it. I was told by the beans here that a light, safe dose is 0.2ml, but that if that seemed too much, to lower it to 0.1 (this is exactly what Michelle did with Mannie). Good luck. I hope that MC will be feeling OK today.

Let's see some blue, Furball! Hope you get some good naps in today, Carla.

Hugs and scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=281 Bupe ?

Glad Furball is doing well and hope she gives you some blue today. Sorry about MC and hope that the medicine helps and gets feeling better.

Hope you get some rest as well Carla. Take care and thanks for the visit yesterday.

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=280 Bupe ?

Hi Carla, so glad MC's dental went well. The Bupe will help MC with the pain and looks like you've got a lot of help with it. Come on down Furball. Hope you can catch up on some rest today.

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=280 +5.5=50

 on the 50. I just gave Furball a little bit of LC food. I will see how she does with that. She must have read my mind because I was thinking if she didn't get back on track today she would probably need a dose increase to kick start her.

Thanks everyone for the advice on the Bupe and the well wishes for MC. She seems to be doing fine on the 3cc the vet told me to give her. Now that I know how frequently to give it (every 8 hrs.) I can set a schedule.

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=280 +5.5=50 +6=98

Furball seems to be coming back up on her own. I'm glad I didn't break out any higher carb food. I wasn't expecting that low of a number after the high yellow start. I lost track of time and didn't get any morning tests in. I wonder if she went lower?

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=280 +5.5=50 +6=98

Action Jackson! Go Furball!  We have bupe for Zener too. We gave him 0.1 ml this morning since he seemed a little punk but will only give as needed. My understanding is it's not like Lantus or other meds that need a regular schedule but I could be wrong on that. Zener didn't have any extractions either so his pain level should be pretty low. I hope MC recovers quickly and smoothly. Happy Caturday, Carla!

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=280 +5.5=50 +6=98 PMPS=503

I wasn't expecting that big of a bounce this evening, but I wasn't expecting that drop this morning either. Poor Furball, what a rollercoaster she's been on today. I hope she settles down tomorrow.

I think I'm going to reduce MC's bupe to 2cc instead of 3cc. She has seemed a little confused today. I think her dose is too high.

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=280 +5.5=50 +6=98 PMPS=503

Blech on that BG! Come back down, Furball. Do you mean 0.2 from 0.3 cc? A cc is the same as a ml. You don't have to give it every 8 hours, just as needed. Healing vines to MC.
Liz

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=280 +5.5=50 +6=98 PMPS=503

Liz, I wasn't sure if a cc was the same as a ml. They told me 3 cc's, but it looks like 0.3 ml on the syringe. The vet told me to give the Bupe three times a day for 5 to 7 days. I'm afraid not to give it three times a day for the first couple of days because I don't want MC to be in pain since she had so many teeth removed. I'm not sure if I can tell is she's in pain if I don't give the Bupe and only give as needed. Thanks for the healing vines. I'm glad Zener is doing so well.

Re: 03/16 Furball AMPS=280 +5.5=50 +6=98 PMPS=503

Furball, you are being overly dramatic today!! Nice green, even if it's a day early for St. Patrick's day. I hope she gets over that bounce soon Carla. Sending some healing vines for MC and wishing her free from pain.

I thought I had everything figured out with MC and the bupe, but now I'm not sure. She has seemed somewhat out of it most of the day. I think she's on too high of a dose at 0.3 ml each dose. The vet said to give the bupe three times a day. I'm wondering if she really needs to have it that many times a day. I gave her 0.15 ml this evening because she seemed to be more alert as the bupe wore off, but I don't want her to be in pain. How do you tell if a cat is in pain? Thanks for your thoughts.

shadow had Bupe a year ago for her dental and after the first day we had to discontinue it because she couldn't relax... she paced... she moved from one
spot on the hardwood floor to another, and was very agitated. I believe (imho) that they are just like us in that some of us need smaller doses and some
need more. My grandmother can pass out from an ibuprofen where I can take many and still need more.
I went and found this list below....

Here are some signs that your cat may be in pain:
•Lack of grooming
•Sleeping a lot and/or sleeping in only one position, especially if this is a change from weeks/months/years past.
•Lack of interest in food, water or surrounding
•Wanting to be left alone
•Growling or hissing when stroked, touched or moved
•Nonstop purring
•Licking a particular area
•Abnormal body positions, such as a hunched-back or head-in-the-corner stance
•Restlessness
•Change in food preferences, sleeping spots and/or litter box habits
•General irritability or crankiness
•Reluctance to jump to favorite spots, such as window sills and beds
•Reduced social interactions with owners, other cats in home
•Hiding or isolating oneself

If you can figure out if a cat is in pain, I suspect that there will be many vets and caregivers in your debt. Cats are notorious for hiding pain. They have the ability to compartmentalize their discomfort and go on with business as usual.

If you think that it's too much bupe, drop the dose back and observe MC's behavior. If your kitty seems OK and not in any obvious discomfort, you'll have found a good dose.

Wow -I'm not digging that black mark on the spreadsheet, Mr Furball. At least you appear to be sliding back down the rainbow. Let's flatten it out, pal!

I'd believe the bupe is for any pain caused by the dental extraction. If the cat is eating it's normal portion, alert & calm, sleep comfortably I'd think the pain is not much.

Carla

Wow...how great for Furball!

Gus gets bupe every day. He gets the same concentration that you have for MC. Gus weighs 9.5 lbs and can take anywhere from 0.1ml - 0.25ml every 8 hours. The upper end of it will keep him sleepier.
