03/12 Eddie AMPS 358 +3 392 PMPS 398 +2 353

@Wendy&Neko @FrostD

Hi Wendy and Melissa,
Can you speculate on what kind of bounce activity this is?? Since last night the surge is impressive. What would trigger that? Is there something I need to consider? He did not get into any contraband and nothing else changed.

I will be making a separate post about 'holiday dose" advice since I will be going away on Tuesday (afternoon) to Thursday afternoon. Even though the sitter is able to administer insulin, she does not feel confident to do testing and I'm worried about all kind of things happening!!!

I always found that bounces from steep drops brought worse bounce numbers that those from going lower than used to. Eddie really likes to fall of the cliff when he onsets, which is why giving him some fresh food (carbs) maybe 30 minutes before onset might help slow that plunge. The second thing that could be at play is lack of duration. If you give him food after nadir, you can shorten duration, thus causing higher numbers for the following preshot. Which in turns means an even deeper dive at the following onset. More bounce, lather, rinse, repeat.

As for petsitter dose, you might want to try it a couple days before you go, so you can see what he does on that dose. If, for example, you took a little off to 7.5 units, it's on the line and easier for the petsitter to draw. If you start it tomorrow, you could see what he does on that dose before you go and see if it'll work for the few days, or he needs to go down further while you are gone.

When you say "onset" do you mean nadir? Also, it's not always going to be possible to give him food (do you mean LC or MC) 30 minutes before if I'm not at home!

Ok, well, I feed him, as we've discussed 4 times daily (more if he goes plunging, of course) and it looks like this:
AMPS
Breakfast & insulin

+3 small lunch

+8 small portion (not dinner)

PMPS
Dinner + insulin

PMPS +2: a LC snack.

Ok, this sounds like a good idea and the pet sitter won't be so nervous drawing it up. I'll try it tomorrow.
Thank you.

Is the pet sitter going to feed snacks during the cycle? If not, you might want to replicate as closely as possible the situation and skip snacks also (but get the BG tests anyway so you know what’s happening).

Important things to know. Learn how YOUR kitty is responding to insulin:
  • Onset - the length of time before insulin reaches the bloodstream & begins lowering blood glucose
  • Peak/Nadir - the lowest point in the cycle
  • Duration - the length of time insulin continues to lower blood glucose

Oh, of course, thank you!!! Does one determine onset by testing like @ +1 or +2? Sometimes the BG numbers are higher @ +2. I'm really wondering about duration as sometimes it seems that he starts to rise up well before PMPS.

Petsitter is going to feed 4x daily so that's good.

You find onset by checking at normal (non bounce) cycles, and seeing when the numbers start to go down. He definitely is dropping by +2, question is whether it's earlier, like +1.5.
