03/07 Bubba AMPS 202; +2.75 103; +5.25 41; +6.25 50; +7.5 56; +8 65; PMPS 148 (reduction); +2.75 221

Oooh! Wonder if this is the cycle he clears the bounce and gives you blues and greens again! Don't fill him up. You might need him to eat later in the cycle. Are you home today? Can you get a +2?

Most of the Red Dog/Blue Kat are in the 3-5% carb range, so perfect LC. But it's time to break out the high carb!

Up Bubba!

he's never eaten canned food and the crap/additives (from the churu and dried treats my dad was sneaking ages ago) causes him to have small hair loss patch on the back of his neck; so I hope a small bit of honey on the gums is an appropriate alternative??

Honey on the gums or honey/syrup on a bit of LC is fine. At one point I was considering doing some of the Honest Kitchen dehydrated raw. It used to be at least MC, but it's easier to just do honey or syrup. We also had a member feeding raw that made her own gravy with potato or rice flour.

Hopefully today isn't your nap between night shifts.

thanks Wendy! Today is my day off and we have a vet appointment this afternoon anyways for a BW follow-up to check Bubba's potassium levels, and I guess for his solensia injection and to see about alternative/other arthritis pain options?

I forgot, we also have Primal Raw beef and salmon dehydrated nuggets Bubba gets too

dumb question time: what could cause Bubba to go low again today after the yellows and pinks the last 2 days? just clearing the bounce?
should I stay at 6U tonight? or see how his #s go today?

Yes, he cleared the bounce and dropped to show what this dose can do. Bounce clearing cycle can definitely have extra downward momentum to them.

His new dose as of tonight is 5.5 units. Reduce when they go under 50, and it's been more than a cycle or two. The depot of the 6.5 unit dose is gone, and 6 units is showing it's too much.

How long until the vet appointment? Would like to get him up and stable for that. Ask the vet about acupuncture, it really helped Neko's arthritis.

thanks Wendy. 5.5U tonight it is! vet appt is 2 hrs from now

Leave for the vet in 1/2 hour? I'd test again soon and see if he needs a higher carb boost or is OK to stick with LC.

It’s 3.1mmol and we leave in about 35 minutes. He didn’t finish his food I put down earlier so I’ll give him another honey boost

He might not need honey if he was home, but best to boost him up a bit for the visit to stay safe. Up Bubba!
Yeah that’s what I figured too. We opened a can of fissie and added some fish juice to the rest of his meal to finish it. Once he heard the can open he perked right up LOLOL

Good luck at the vets.

Thank you! Bubba's vet was very happy with Bubba's diabetes progress...
  • fructosamine was 307 (compared to 511 Feb 3)
  • sugars were 5.8mmol (compared to 23 Feb 3)
  • AND Bubba gained 2lbs since Feb 3!!!!!
  • potassium was 3.9 (increased from 3.1 Feb 3). He will continue to be on Thera-K to ensure appropriate potassium levels.
  • He will also continue to be on onsior to help with pancreatitis. His pancreas specific lipase (fPLI) results are still high at around 77? (it was around 65 Feb 3).
  • His kidneys are not happy though :(
  • IDEXX SDMA is 19 (19 on Feb 3 too) - normal is 0-14
  • creatinine is 244 (183 Feb 3) - normal is 71-212
  • Urea (BUN) 26.7 (26.9 Feb 3) - normal is 5.7-12.9
  • phosphorus high at 2.63 (was 1.74 Feb 3) - normal is 1.00-2.42; will re-check in a month - if phosphorus is still high we will put Bubba on a phosphorus binder... vet believes the diabetes masked his impaired kidney function - since he was peeing ++ it flushed everything out, but now that his urine output has decreased since his sugars are becoming regulated, we are now seeing kidney function impairment
Bubba is approx "78 years old" in human years, so kidney impairment is expected I suppose.

Most of the results sound great!

Which percent of the three meats are you feeding Bubba? Beef is good for phosphorus, kangaroo and buffalo are a bit higher. Lamb, venison, and wild boar are lower P options. But that was from data a number of years ago. Don't know if RDBK has since changed their formulas. When Neko's phosphorus crept up, I switched out her even higher P RDBK (chicken, turkey) for home made with TC Feline or FoodFurLife premix and chicken/turkey. That helped delay adding binder for a while.

2 lbs is a lot of weight gain, not so good for arthritis. Any other options to help with that from the vet? Not loving the continued Onsior with a senior kitty, as the manufacturer doesn't recommend more than 3 days. Also it's an NSAID, not sure that's good for kidneys. I found a few vet clinic or other websites that suggest it's not a good idea for kidney cats, including this one. I did find another study that tested cats, including early stage CKD cats on it for a month with no side effect if on minimal dose. Bubba is stage 2 at this point so still in the early category. Another great website for you to learn more about kidney disease in cats: http://www.felinecrf.org/

Thanks for your reply and links Wendy. Bubba rotates between RDBK beef, bison, kangaroo & we just tried turkey a few weeks ago of which he loves. I read the nutritional analysis of each on RDBK's website, but am going to email them as well for what they recommend. While the weight gain doesn't help with Bubba's arthritis, he needed to gain some weight back. He's a big boy and was so boney having lost approx. 3lbs since December 2021 due to the 'beetus. We decided to keep him on the onsior to help with pancreas pain since his numbers are still high and will reassess in about a month.

bumped up to low yellow this evening
Bubba's relaxing, settled this evening
not as hungry this evening either, nor drinking as much
