J.D. is in the CPC today! We went for a walk in the rain before AMPS and Ginger who doesn't like to get wet stayed behind on the covered deck and porch. J.D. and I were at the end of the courtyard when we heard Ginger scream and begin to run towards us. I told her it was okay and that I would be home soon, and quickly got her back inside as she was really making a lot of noise like she was in misery, and then went back to get J.D.

Both kitties enjoyed their 1st Breffis, J.D. ate all his, and Ginger ate most of hers.

Ginger has been having really really really smelly diarrehea and did the scarf and barf yesterday morning, so I hope she is okay.

Question: J.D. has been sneezing some (more than normal), and I often hear of lysine, but don't know where you get it and if you just buy it from a health food store, how much do you give?

I've also found his under his tail area to be wet twice. The night before last, and this morning a little bit. His bed is not wet and my bed is not wet. I don't think he's sitting in water? He peed just fine on my elderly neighbors living room carpet last night ohmygod_smile Unfortunately, I can't take him back there without being tied up outside on a leash next time, because he peed on her throw carpet the last time we were there, too  .

I hope he comes out of this bounce by tonight.

the Now Foods L-Lysine Powder sienne linked to above is safe (100% pure L-Lysine) to give to our diabetic felines:
Other Ingredients
None.
Not manufactured with wheat, gluten, soy, milk, egg, fish, shellfish or tree nut ingredients. Produced in a GMP facility that processes other ingredients containing these allergens.

from my understanding, you can give as much as 1/4 teaspoon twice a day. i just mix it in kitty's food. none of mine have ever noticed. :-D

the Viralys brand kathie mentioned above is rather questionable in my mind. the powder comes in a "palatable base" (who knows what that means!) and the gel contains "Purified Water, L-Lysine HCl, Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Artificial Sweetener, Maple Flavor, Citric Acid, and Riboflavin 5'-Phosphate Sodium". frankly, i'd steer away from this brand when there are other options available.

Hi guys .. aww poor J.D., I hope the lysine helps him out .. and I hope that ginger is feeling better too .. You're such a good mom to them! Have a great day guys!

i use l-lysine to ward off cold sores..ugh!! didn't know you could use it for kitties. I love the rain, glad you took the time to walk in it. smells so wonderful and everything always looks so green.

I've had to use L-lysine a time or 2 on one of my civvies, or another. Whatever was ailing them cleared up pretty quick.

With regards to his under the tail being wet issue, it may sound like an anal gland problem. I just went through that with one of my civvies, Scooter recently. He had the issue of his anal area being wet, and stinky, and it would clear up, then there was a lump right next to his anal area, which started bleeding. It required immediate vet attention, and his anal gland was removed as it had a tumor in it. No more stinky butt for him, and he's perfectly fine now. Try the L-lysine on him, and keep a close watch on that area. If it doesn't clear up, it sounds like it may be time for a vet check.

Sending tons of healing vines, and positive thoughts. :YMHUG:

Hi Dyana,

I buy Solaray L-lysine, 500 mg capsules in the health-food store. I open the capsules, shake out the powder and mix 1/4 teaspoon into Rusty's food twice a day. I don't know how much it helps his "sneezies" (which are chronic), but it can't hurt, since it is supposed to boost the immune system.

Good luck!

Ella & Rusty

Thanks for all the responses. I've never used Lysine before.

The night before last, when I first noticed his butt (area) was wet, we were in bed together and he always sleeps next to or wrapped around my head (and face). I was a little worried that it was diarrehea that I just put my hand into, and very hesitantly smelled it and there was no smell. No smell this morning either. His water fountain is filled to the brim with water. I don't know. I'll keep an eye on it.

twinkie has been on it since I got him. BID every day. he still gets runny eyes every now and then and sneezies. but twink has a lot going on too
wet butt... maybe he just likes cleaning himself a lot lately or you feel it soon after he has finished doing what he was doing and cleaned...oh whatever... i think you just like feeling his butt.... not saying anything about the smelling part. that is between you and him

Thanks, I needed the laugh out loud.

He is 320 at PMPS. His coat is soft, so I don't know if he went lower today.

Just FYI, his butt was not wet tonight, and I felt it  I also brushed it (until he growled at me) because he can't get back there too much anymore, so he has some small hair mats kind of sort of. The first time (two days ago), it was really wet (all around under his bottom), like he sat in something, but it didn't smell .. you are silly

I'll go get some lysine this weekend. What kind do you use? Um, he has had a runny eye for years, and his regular vet always dismisses it. The dental specialist said it might have been because of the severly abcessed canine. It's not as bad. This morning, he sneezed with a mouth full of food, while feeding him on the couch, and I had to pick up all the bits of food he sprayed out. He hasn't sneezed so far, tonight, and his eye is not runny. And his butt is dry.

BUT,,, does his BUTT smell

I order mine from Iherb I believe. it is already a powder and is so easy to handle and it is pure

I know when wheezer had some really bad teeth they put him on ab eye ointment to help clear up infection in sinuses from infected teeth. the AB go in through eyes ducts to sinuses

BUT..BUTT.. gonna get those confused now. sniff sniff
