AMPS 282

Not as high as I thought it might be.

No addidional pain meds or Canna give yesterday. I was going to give pain meds every 6 hours and a Canna in last nights food but decided not to. He seemed to be ok and I don't like giving him stuff if he doesn't really need it.

Appy good. Ate all fuds last night and this mornings PS. Added one Canna to food this AM. Too early to tell if pain is a factor.

Have a great Monday.

Any one ever tired Acupuncture? My vet is a big advocate of it. I am seriously thinking about making Gizmo an appointment to try it. I would like any thoughts or experiences from those that have done it.

My main concern is how stressed he gets at the vets - how beneficial could it be for him?

Here is info from Tanya's site:
Acupuncture is based on the idea that the body has channels along which energy passes. Imbalances or blockages may arise in these channels, leading to health problems, but acupuncture can clear the blockages so that the energy can run smoothly.

To the Western mind, this can sound strange. However, acupuncture for humans is covered by many private health care schemes in the UK, because of its proven benefits. I admit that I myself am a big fan of acupuncture. It has worked wonders for me personally, finally getting rid of pain that nothing else could shift, and had astonishing results on Harpsie's arthritis.

Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine mentions that acupuncture may be of use for pain management and diseases of the kidneys and the liver, and some people have had very good results using acupuncture for CKD cats, either by improving the cat's wellbeing (less vomiting, generally perkier) or occasionally even through an improvement in bloodwork. It can also help with appetite. Of course, I have also heard of a couple of people whose cats did not react particularly well to acupuncture; but when it is performed by a trained professional with sterile needles, acupuncture is unlikely to have bad side effects even if you don't notice an actual improvement, so you may wish to try it and see how you get on.

Gizmo peed on the floor (downstairs) by his scratcher. I am not sure why. It had to have been sometime overnight. I discovered it right before I left for work. That is when I decided to give him the pain meds. I also found him upstairs laying beside the waterbowl when I went to test him for his +1.5.

Two thoughts - the pain meds are making him too lazy to go up stairs or there is something else going on. I find it difficult to believe it could be something other than the pancreatitis or UTI (considering he just had full BW done and nothing showed). He has only done this one other time when he was really, really sick. He isn't acting 100% but not acting really sick (maybe pain).

I am going to start D-mannose tonight in his food.

Sorry about the accident :( My feeling is that these high numbers for Gizmo are contributing to him feeling a bit off. Glad he's eating, that's important. Doodles had acupuncture for his neuropathy and IBD before it became controlled with food. He did pretty good with it and have to believe it did help. Sending vines and prayers that what ever is bothering your little man resolves quickly.

I have been getting acupuncture myself for many years. It's usually directed at whole body "unscrambling" but sometimes targeted toward a painful knee. It's the most relaxing experience I've ever had and has helped my knee pain. I go monthly but would go more often if I could afford it.

He needs potassium also. I am concerned about that. I started the pot suplement the day he started feeling "off" so I backed off of it. I really feel he needs it but am scared to try again. I have two different potassium's. One is a RenalK+ powder and the other is human supplement. I had started with the human at the recommendation of Marje but may try the pet (Renal K+) and see if he tolerates it better.

From the look at his +1.5 this morning maybe he is coming down a bit.

I wouldn't play with potassium supplements without getting regular bloodwork to make sure you have the dose right.

Neko got accupuncture regularly for her arthritis. After the first while of more frequent sessions, we backed down to every 3-4 weeks as needed. She wasn't hugely fond of the needles in some locations, but she really liked the acupuncture laser. The sessions were done on a large "sofa" where both vetty and I would sit with Neko between us. She would lean into vetty during her acupuncture sessions because she liked it. If vetty and I spent too much time chit chatting before hand, she would go over to the sofa and try to hop on - like she was saying "get on with it". :) She got to know that it helped her and would often "show" vetty where she needed done. Neko's mobility was visibly improved after a session. Vetty also taught me how to do acupressure, which I did daily and seemed to help the effects of acupuncture last longer.

The vet agreed with the addition of the potassium - his last bw showed 3.5 and he should be 4.0-4.4. I am aware he needs check regularly with the addition.

Vet wanted to pursue acupuncture for the pancreatitis - if it helped with the arthritis (if he has it) - it would be a bonus. I tried checking him with movement of his front legs and didn't get any reaction from him but I might not have been doing it right. I am just concerned because he has such an adverse reaction to the vet, vet office and anyone from there touching him that I worry it might stress him more that it would help him.

Can you check to see if there is a travelling vet that does acupuncture. I know of a couple of people who have done that. Gizmo might be more cooperative at home. If not, the first few times at a strange vet I spray the carrier with Feliway and give a couple drops of Rescue Remedy for pets the morning before travel.

You would think that in a large(r) city like Houston - especially with the heat issue that there would be a lot more options like this but, sadly, I have not found any - especially on the outskirts of the city like where I am.

Bbbblllluuuueee!

Seems he is feeling better? Ate all his fuds for the AM cycle. Ate all PS fuds.

I hope you can find someone who will come over to the house for acupuncture. I had someone come to my house for my kitty Charles and he always felt better after the treatment.

I love your blue suit Gizmo!

Oh, I meant to add when I had it done for Charles he had hyperthyroidism, kidney issues and heart issues.
