your SS starts Dec 20th, is that when you began the current lantus vial too?

Gona wait and see what others say, I may be completely way off or off my rocker

We purchased the Lantus on 12/04/2009, and as I said, the expiration date is 6/2011

:-D you may be off your rocker, but not from anything you've said here, :-D
thanks for your insights and caring.

I wonder since Gentle is almost 13, and has been on insulin for 3 years, this is his limit? I need to read more about that?

The expiration date refers to how long the insulin is good for unopened. It's essentially it's shelf life prior to use.

There is some discussion about how long Lantus is good for. There are outward signs that your insulin is toast. The most obvious is that there are "floaties" - crystals forming in the container. They are not always easy to see. Having shaked, rattled or rolled your insulin (dropping it, the cat playing soccer with the container) may also cause it to lose potency. Freezing it will also cause it to go "bad."

The manufacturer states that Lantus is good for only 28 days after the container (vial or cartridge) is opened. Members of the German forum have noted that they have been able to use the same cartridge of Lantus for 6 mos. Many of us here have found that we are unable to use our Lantus for any where near that long of a period. In Gabby's case, she appears to be exceptionally sensitive to any change in insulin potency. I switch out cartridges at 28 days. Any time I've gone beyond that period, Gabby's numbers get wonky.

Given that you're seeing less and less of a response to insulin, one thought is to open a new container. Most of us use the cartridges or pens as there is less waste. You could also up the dose. However, I wouldn't do both. My inclination is to suggest you get new Lantus.
