Good morning everybody. Hope y'all are wakin up better than I am... ~O) :YMSIGH: ~O) :YMSIGH: So tonight will be Sam's 14th cycle. I'm not sure whether to go ahead with an otj trial tomorrow or not considering the few extra blues the last couple of days. Suggestions?? Also, I have a question on food. I have been feeding Sam about 3/4+ of the 13 oz cans each day. I don't want to overfeed him so I thought this was plenty, but I wouldn't be surprised if he could eat a full can. He does want to eat whenever I offer. Just wondering if that would be too much, or perhaps he is needing more and that would help regulate his bg even more. Looking forward to some more of your wonderful expert advice all on this! :-D Still learning so much from all of you. Have a great day everybody!

This is a formula for calculating calories per day from Dr. Lisa's website:
Required calories per day = [13.6 X optimal lean body weight in pounds] + 70
She does say this is a "generous" calculation.

Sam may have had a few blues but they have been well within a normal BG range. (I think you're nervous about an OTJ trial!!) Let's see what others have to say.

Hi guys .. I think sam siam is looking wonderful! I was nervous about starting the OTJ trial as well, but remember, it is a trial, and if need be, you can always do a few more drops if his numbers warrant it .. have a great day!

Thanks for the formula Sienne. I guess my question is, how do I know what his "optimal" lean body weight should be? He looks fine, not fat or anything, but with a cat a couple of lbs can make a difference. Thx!

...Funny part is that I was soooo eager a couple of weeks ago but you are right, a bit nervous now. We can do it though cause we have our Lantus family for support!

Donna: when I get back home I'll send you a link that shows what a cat at optimal weight should look like. I do find that calorie calc to be over generous. With Tobey, it calculated 240 kcal/ day. I gradually reduced him while weighing him every week until we got to a maintenance of 195 kcal/day.

We had a little back channel discussion and agree that Sam could use a little more time on insulin to bring the overall range down. You want him to be able to stay OTJ once you start the trial.

I'll get back to you later today with the figure Inwant to show you.

Donna: I do find that formula to way too generous at least for my cats. I used it as a starting place and weighed them every week...slowly reducing their calories if they did not lose. That calculation had Tobey getting 240 kcal/day. I finally have him maintaining a nice weight at 195 kcal/ day. For optimal weight, you should use the weight that keeps him slim but not thin. There is a diagram on Dr. Lisa's website that I will send to you when I'm not on my iPad but the waistline should be evident when you are looking down on the cat. You should be able to feel the ribs through a layer of fat...but not a thick layer.

iMHO, Sam could use a little more time on the insulin to try and bring the overall range down.

Thanks Marjorie. I'll look forward to seeing that info. As much as I wanted to take him off a couple of weeks ago I'm actually learning some patience  and agree that I would feel more comfortable when he's not so "on the edge". His numbers are great, but we want to keep them down there, right?!! Again, thanks. I'm at work as well, so will check back this evening. Have a great day!

Sorry for the two posts. I did one and then the board kicked me off so I didn't realize it posted. Interestingly, the second one I did posted before the first one.

Here's the diagram to which I was referring:

Cat Body Condition

I also think you can look back at his weight at the vet when he looked like the "ideal" cat figure and then see what his weight was.

Let us know if you have questions :-D

Re: 02/23 Sam Siam amps 103, pmps 100

Thanks Marjorie! I will check Sam out better but a quick look showed that he is pretty close to ideal, but it would be good to see a bit more of a waist. When we first got him he was 12.5 & his last visit was 13. They didn't say anything about him being overweight. I'll check what he is now as a comparison. I will figure out the calories in his food and go from there. Also, we will stick to .10 for awhile longer to see if we can get him a bit more even in the greens. With all that has gone on this week with my hubby I think it's all the energy I have just to not make any changes for now anyhow. My focus is on my other diabetic guy right now! Thanks for all of your support and research! Have a good evening.
