Valentine's Day

I always hand write the code to post quotes and urls. Is there a short cut that helps with this somewhere?

Jackson is 5 pounds 15.75 ounces (the scale keeps flashing between 6 pounds and 5 pounds 15.5 ounces) today. That's another 9 ounces of weight gain. I think with this pattern, he will be 24 pounds by December 1st.

I went shopping for Kitten food kibble this afternoon, and he has been eating Simply Nourish Kitten Food as that is what he came home with and they told me not to change his food (too quickly?) and he had diarrhea anyway when I first got him. They only had the Simply Nourish in huge bags and the Best Before date was July 2015, so I finally got someone to help me and was either going to get Blue Buffalo Freedom Indoor Kitten as they advertise grain free with no glutens, and I have to think about Ginger, too, because she eats it. I finally decided on the Wellness Complete Health Kitten Health because the package just looked better with the ingredients easy to read. Now, I see that I guess I should have bought the Wellness Core Grain Free Kitten Formula

Ginger has been acting a little weird and I almost took her to the vet today. A few days ago, I took her outside and she went directly back to the front door and made awful noises, until I let her in the house. This morning, she went outside, and walked around the deck, and then jumped up on the air conditioner and then got up on the top rail of the wrought iron "fence" around the deck and walked along the top of that and back towards the front door. Then she made terrible noises again, and jumped to the ground and I let her in the house, and she was fine. A bit later, I went to check her paws to see if it was the salt (everyone around here loves to put on the ground) was bothering her or stuck in her feet, and she began growling loud, and then when I persisted, she almost went off, and I had to scruff her. I just took her and Jackson out again, and she headed home right away and started growling as she was walking and at Jackson who was trying to follow her and then made noises like a Siamese in pain, while waiting for me to open the sliding glass door for her. She seems fine inside. Eating, and playing, and purring. I don't know what to make of it. I hope she is alright. I was just playing with her with a feather until Jackson came to interupt us, and now Ginger is sitting next to the sliding glass door watching the birdies eating bird seed outside on the deck.

Dyana, are you planning to continue to feed Jackson kibble? I'm just curious since I know the mantra around here is "no dry food" for any cat. Or are you going to transition him to moist?

Maybe Ginger just doesn't want to go outside. Is it really cold there? Maybe she doesn't like that. If this continues, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to get her checked out.

They mostly eat wet. I usually split two cans of FF between them in the morning and two more at night. Last night they ate 3 cans. There is always kibble out. When I got him, the lady said to give him his kibble and it is Kitten food, the FF is not. Is it okay for him to just have Adult food only? I am guessing it is okay for Ginger to have Kitten food. She nibbles on the dry too. I mix it with Young Again Zero Carb.

It has been very cold here, but she was walking in the snow just last week.

I was going to have her blood work done around her birthday in May, but maybe I'll have it done next weekend, instead.

If you feed a quality adult food, it probably is okay, but I'd ask your vet. Kitten food tends to be higher in protein and calories, as a kitten needs more than an adult cat. The oncologist treating my cats told me to feed Sasha kitten food to try to get her to gain back some of the weight she's lost.

You know Ginger best, and if you think something isn't right, you'll feel better getting it checked out. How old is she? Could the cold be making her joints hurt?

Sending lots of healing vines for her!

Thank you, Tricia. Ginger will be 11 in May. I know my hip was really hurting me today.
I've been watching her weight, too. She's got a bit of a loose belly on her, but I've seen a waist area forming when I look down on her, since getting the kitten. She's been getting a lot more exercise lately.

I wonder if something scared Ginger outside and she doesn't want to stay out. I hope you can figure out what is going on. I have no idea on the food. I'd ask the vet.

She was doing that itching and scratching thing all summer and it has lessened. I try to read the ingredients of food and stay away from gluten now.
After I posted, Jackson went out in the snow, and I kept calling him and he wouldn't come in, until some neighbors came out and he skiddadled back into the house. He is so afraid of people (and cars). It's from being feral for the first two month of his life. I wish I could get him more socialized with people. I yearn to take him out. I've only taken him in his carrier for a car ride. I know if I take him into a store where there are people, that he will freak out and try to escape. I saw a kitten about his age being carried by a little girl at PetsMart today, and the kitten was so calm. I don't know how to socialize him. I guess he will just be like J.D. who was also feral and afraid of people most of his life.
When he came inside I picked him up to warm him in my jacket and was snuggling him and he was purring and then I walked over to Ginger who was sitting on top of her cat tree and started loving on her, and then I held Jackson to her, and she licked his head :)

They are now laying on my bed and are 1 inch from touching. It's been 7 weeks now. I think/hope they are going to be snuggle kitties someday.

Maybe it is the cold snow bothering Ginger's feet...or the salt.

It sounds like Ginger and Jackson are loving each other - that's wonderful!!

If she's had a recent experience with salt stinging any cuts in her foot pads, she might be wanting to avoid it now. Just an idea.

All of my kittens, including Anya, came with diarrhea. When punkin became diabetic and I switched him and Anya to canned, Anya's diarrhea stopped and never came back. We'd tried lots of vet things before then and nothing worked. I think the dry food made it worse.

We switched McGee and Frodo over within a month to Friskies pates. So they were 6 months old. In theory kittens are supposed to have kitten food for a year, but since I'm certain there arent special birds labeled for kittens I figure that is a marketing ploy.

Sounds like Jackson is growing just right!

It's fine to feed an adult cat kitten food unless they're overweight. Kitten food has a higher percentage of protein and fat (so it's often good for diabetics - Vyktor has quite a bit of kitten food) which kittens need for their growing phase, a bit of adult food won't hurt but I'd make it mostly kitten food for the first few months.

I think Julie may be onto something with the cut foot salt sting idea since Ginger is just fine when she's inside. Maybe she still has a little cut/abrasion on a paw that will need to heal properly before she wants to get back out there.

Way cute on the head lick

I agree, I bet Ginger has a cut on her foot and the salt or simply the cold from the snow stings her little paws- ouchie! That is so cute Ginger and Jackson are getting along! After reading Melissa's Tribute to her civvie Turnup, it sounded like Turnup was mother to Tarragon and their drooler. Maybe Ginger has maternal instincts!

I thought I read in Dr. Lisa's site that in the wild, young kittens don't get "kitten"food, they get what mom or dad brings home?
