02/15 Sandy AMBG 50 - OTJ Trial Day 9

Last night at PMBG Sandy was in the low 40’s. He was sleeping and when he woke up he looked fine so I didn’t worry too much but still gave him couple drops of karo syrup just in case. 2 hours later he was 51 and I crashed. This am at 71. He’s been staying in lower numbers past few day. He had high kidney levels when he was going through DKA few weeks ago.
His kidneys did improve but but numbers were still higher than normal. I hope this isn’t the reason for the few times he’s drops low

Did you see the OTJ directions I posted for you? Only test ambg and pmbg unless you get a high number. She’s doing great.

So under 40 is normal? I’m not sure I understand that?
Isn’t it dangerous for him to go low as well?
I just don’t want to miss something and have something happen to him.
I know that it’s not being caused by insulin but there’s other things that could be causing this? He had acute kidney injury when he went through DKA and I’m worried this is happening because his kidneys haven’t healed completely. Or they may not heal fully at all.

Have a look at the spreadsheets of other OTJ cats. It’s normal for many cats to have a low BG.

Btw the BG would be a little higher with a pet meter.

This is Simba's spreadsheet. Almost all of his OTJ trial numbers were below 50. Sometimes even below 40.

George tested 42 once when he was not on insulin.
Other folk have tested their non diabetic cats and not unusual to find them in the 40's
Under 50 isn't hypo, it's just the number at which we take action, for safety when kitty is on insulin.

Elise and Gill are correct. It’s perfectly normal for cats who are not getting insulin to drop a bit lower than 50 at times. Don’t give honey or karo.
He’s doing so well!!

Ok it’s just scary with all he’s been through I just don’t want him to decline. He was making hacking noises a couple times and ended up throwing up. The food was undigested and looked like it was his meals from the whole day it was so much. And he only eats about a tablespoon at a time.

Oh ok. And not that I know of. He has thrown up in the past and the vet told me to change his food and I did. He was good for a while and then it stated again. He was throwing up once or twice a week. But I’m taking him to new vet on the 24th. Because I’m really upset that I brought him in on time at the first sign of dehydration and we were just sent home.
I hope the new vet is better than the one we have.
I feel the clinic is good at keeping up with healthy animals but when sick they don’t handle it well and they don’t do thorough checkups.
Nothing has been mentioned to me about pancreas or IBD.
But I’m going to ask about it at the new vet.

Thtge vomiting makes me think food there could be a food intolerance or IBD. It’s usually the protein and sometimes switching to a novel protein never eaten before takes care of it. I don’t what they are teaching in vet school but there’s very little on diabetes or nutrition. I hope the new vet is a good one.
