Panzer had a low AMPS this morning so I decided to give him 0.25 units. Even though he had a fairly decent cycle I think I probably should have given him the full dose of 0.5 units. I tested him for ketones right after his AMPS shot & feeding & he was negative (picture posted on previous thread) Panzer is not a very vocal cat & I have noticed yesterday & today that he has done one of those worbaling meows like they do when something is wrong. I went to see what he was crying about & he was in the litter box peeing. Could this mean he has a UTI? If so & I make a vet appointment & he has one , what should I have them do? What should it be treated with? Am I just being an over worrying Mom? I've been making all of there meals soupy & they scarf it down! Any input is greatly appreciated! @FrostD @Diane Tyler's Mom @Bandit's Mom @tiffmaxee @Bron and Sheba (GA) @carfurby @Suzanne & Darcy @Katherine&Ruby https://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB...-117-4-114-5-114-6-116-7.258782/#post-2909014

Can you take a sample in to your vet? Some prefer the sterile samples, but mine lets me drop one off (catch, put in fridge but they need to run it within 24 hours).

What about constipation?

I will definitely call & ask them Monday morning. No I've seen him pooping with no problem. I don't think anybody stalks there cats as much as we all do:smuggrin:

Has he ever had any urinary symptoms before? If it’s not a UTI….definitely worth checking that out….it could possibly be FLUTD……that can cause pain.

He has had 2 UTIs in his lifetime, pancreitis twice, & when he was diagnosed with kidney stones when he was diagnosed with diabetes. What is FLUTD?

What is FLUTD?
Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease. Google it to find out symptoms.
My Sheba had what I thought was a string of UTIs and was treated with antibiotics but it was FLUTD.
It can come on for a few days then settle down or hang around for a week. Symptoms are much like a UTI but there is no bacteria in the urine.

Hmm OK I will Google it. Do you think his kidney stones could be moving? I got a care credit account a couple of months ago, but trying to save it for emergencies, but I know this could definitely turn into one if I don't get a jump on it.

It sounds like a vet appointment is a good idea. If you think he may have a UTI, you can get some D-Mannose and start giving it now. You can buy capsule or buy it loose and add 1/4 tsp in the food a couple times a day. It won't hurt him if he doesn't have a UTI. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Where do I buy it at?

I looked up the FLUTD & he doesn't really have any of the symptoms. He is an older male kitty though so I guess it's possible. He has never peed outside of the box ( knock on wood) even when he was drugged up badly after his dental surgery in October, I put pee pads all around the litter box & he would not have anything to do with them. He just laid in the litter box because he couldn't stand. I do have 2 tote cat boxes that I scoop daily so there is most likely no bacteria in it. I'm going to call the vet Monday morning.

This is the kind of D Mannose I gave to Ruby when she had what I thought was a UTI shortly after starting steroids: https://www.amazon.com/NOW-Foods-733739028105-D-Mannose-3-Ounce/dp/B000HCMK90. It's a loose powder, I have seen lots of different opinions regarding dosage. I gave a teaspoon a few times a day in her food and it cleared things right up within a few days. It's a non-digestible sugar so it won't affect BG levels. The vet will likely want to prescribe antibiotics, but I would not do so until you get a sterile urine culture to make sure there is bacteria or blood in the urine before giving any antibiotics because if he doesn't need them it will do more harm than good. Good luck, Chris. :bighug:

*adding here: I thought Ruby had a UTI, but it was just idiopathic cystitis, because the oncologist found no blood or bacteria in her urine, so I did not give her antibiotics. Whatever caused the irritation in her bladder was cleared up by the D Mannose.

Thank you so much for the info :cat: I will definitely be looking into getting some tomorrow morning :bighug:

I got my D Mannose at a local natural food store so you needn't wait for an Amazon delivery. It's a very common item as humans use it a lot for their own UTIs. Other common supplements given to cats with bladder issues are cornsilk and marshmallow root. These are used to coat the lining of the bladder to soothe irritation, whereas D Mannose attaches itself to bacteria or irritants and removes them from the bladder through urine.

D Mannose is a very good supplement for a specific thing, but it will only be effective in helping with UTIs if the bacteria is E. coli. If it is not E. coli, it won’t help, but I don’t think it can hurt to start it - although I have no data on whether it will interfere with getting an accurate urinalysis or urine culture.

Simply by looking at a urine specimen under the microscope tomorrow they should be able to see whether bacterial calls are present. They will be able to determine whether the bacteria are gram-positive or gram-negative and this will give them an idea of which antibiotic to prescribe. If they do see bacteria, I would recommend starting on a broad spectrum antibiotic like Zeniquin and not letting your kitty suffer longer while they culture out a specific organism. If they do a culture and find that they need to change antibiotics then they can, but you don’t want to leave those bacteria in the urinary tract to multiply and cause further pain and a lot of inflammation that can cause problems down the road.

Well I'm unable to find any at any stores GNC included(except the vegetarian kind which has rice flour in it)so I ordered some online. He's been acting fine today, no worbaling meows. He got a pawful of whipped cream from my breakfast earlier Lol so that may raise his PMPS # not sure guess I will see in an hour. I haven't been able to get a urine sample yet, but I will before the nights over.
