Norman is doing good with his off the juice trial. When looking at his SS I can't help but feel he is rising up. Yes we did have a nice 59 the other evening ( I am pretty sure that happened cause he was napping, the house was quiet as the other cats were sleeping also and no bullcrap going on lol )......SO this after getting +4 hour reading I mixed a little Fancy Feast Classic Chicken in with his M/D canned food.....getting a little worried although I know 100 is ok for BG.

wondering what everyone thinks about a transition in food to Friskies Special Diet Turkey and Giblets....it 37 protein 58 fat and 5 cars 166 phos.....I worry about the fat content cause he is overweight

Hey Cindy!

I can't tell from your OP at what point you fed before testing. Try to test, then feed...then test again in about 2.5-3 hours to see if you get a lower number. This means he brought himself down and Mr. P is working!

I know you don't like to see a higher number, but the 90's are still perfectly normal numbers. Norman's natural BG's will go up and down throughout a day...just like you said from stress, if he plays more or less, doesn't feel good, ate too much or little, etc...

As far as fat content goes, I didn't factor that whatsoever for us...I switched Hank to LC <10% all canned spread out over the day into mini meals (adding 2T++ of water to each serving) and he naturally slimmed down. He had lost some weight before his initial diagnosis, but after switching his food he lost a little more and kept it all off from then on just eating that way.
I know when I ate mini meals it helped my weight too...I need to do that again ;) I think for sure try the friskies if you think he'll like it..and see how it goes. Plus since the protein/fat/carb must add to 100- if carb is low something else has to go up so you cannot really find low carb and low, low fat anyway. You can increase the protein ratio by adding some cooked chicken or some other protein to his diet, I think Dr. Lisa says up to 15% of daily intake. But for us just the LC- mini meals did it. We did not feed a set amount...sometimes 5 meals a day..even up to 8 or more depending on schedule and when he was hungry. But I do think a before bed meal helped him overnight so he didn't wake up hungry (or wake me up). Spreading their meals out evens out their levels and is easier on their pancreas.

I know it is hard to not worry at each # but you really have to have to stand back and look at his overall progress..over a week, 2 weeks, etc... But keep posting and if something seems off ask about it. I think he's doing great!

WooHOo GO Norman!!!
is it day 5?
Happy DAY 5!!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

I am still thinking about adding some of the friskies special diet .....my other cats could benefit from it being lower carb also....just worried that the protein is not high enough..Norm does eat before bedtime lol

Betty I hope you see this....I mixed his M/D with some Fancy Feast that I had , classic of course...and now I get a 68BG so the higher carb in the M/D is my culprit

That's not a big surprise Cindy! Just like with human diabetics, it's the carbs that are the most important thing to limit, so if you go down in the carbs, the BG usually goes down too!

WOO HOO on Norman's OTJ trial!! He's looking great!!

Cindy-
You don't need the M/D..we've been telling you that forever. It is expensive and no better (and somewhat worse) than many other commercially available foods out there. It is fine to transition him a little slowly like you are but hopefully you will get him off altogether soon. At 14% calories form carbs it is not helping the cause. And if you want to up the protein ration, then just augment with some straight protein like boiled chicken or turkey like I said, just keep it to no more than 15% of daily consumption (so he gets all his proper vitamins and minerals)
Also, while Hank had his one or two main staples, we rotated several different other varieties into the mix. Just keep trying different things to see what Norman likes and tolerates best. Just stay <10%.

He's doing great!

Norman's #s are looking great! :D

If you're concerned about his weight, what you may want to try is getting a kitchen scale, and start weighing his food on a daily basis. Also, you may want to get a pet scale (got mine at Amazon.com) and keep tabs of his weight daily or every other day. Just a thought. Good luck!

I went out today after going over and over Lisas canned food choices..I chose the Friskies Special Diet Turkey and Giblets...I am transitioning him over. He loves the cat food , I am mixing slowly to prevent tummy upset and the trots .......his numbers have dropped nice already just from giving 3/4 M/D mixed with 1/4 Friskies.....I am so happy. I can't wait to see his numbers after he is totally on the low carb. I thought I was doing good by listening to the Vet.....Now I posted on the Fb page my Vet did communicate today with me that I was right on the M/D and that Fancy Feast is best for Diabetic cats or any lower carb food with less than 10% carb......He did some research and talked with some other vets and found out what you all knew.......I trusted my vet as he was voted Americas favorite Vet in 2013 and had his face all over Time Square in NYS ....His name Is Dr. Campos of Spring Hill Fl, very good vet but he was wrong......I feel Norman can stay in remission now ...

Most vets are not up on nutrition...they have very little training in that area. The exception is Dr. Lisa...she's a feline nutrition guru. She apparently posts on VIN trying to at least make her case on diet with her contemporaries. At least your vet was open to researching and learning. That in of itself is a great thing.
