So, I couldn’t sleep very well and I fed Nigel about 45 minutes before AMBG this morning. I put out an extra half a can of food for him last night before I went to bed as well after the test I did at +3 PMBG. It wasn’t frozen. I can try that trick tonight, but it was too late to get to it last night. Anyway, can too much food raise his BG? Or if the meals aren’t small and spaced? His eating habits are pretty inconsistent. Last night he ate everything fairly quickly at PMBG—not much grazing. It should be easier to control the timing of his feedings when I receive his feeder tomorrow.

How should I space his feeding once it arrives? He’s 15.5 lbs and I’m feeding him FF. Been giving him 1 can each at AMBG/PMBG and then splitting a third can and putting it out before leaving for work and going to bed, or midday if I’m home.

Feeding 45 minutes before the AMPS will inflate his numbers so, it's possible that he would have been lower at AMPS without that meal.

At 15.5 lbs, Nigel should be eating around 279 calories a day. The formula for calories a day is: weight of cat X 13.5 + 70 = calories a day. It's a good starting place for calories and the activity level and age of cat should be regarded too.

I am assuming that Nigel is at his ideal weight? If he were to be overweight, you would use his ideal weight in the formula and if he were to be underweight you would use the weight he should be in the formula.

You'll have to see how many calories are in each can of FF and figure out how many it will take to reach 279. If I remember correctly, the classics are around 92 /can. Maybe you'll want to divide the 4 feedings you are doing into equal parts. You'll have to experiment with it to see what works best for him.

Your signature says you are feeding TJ Salmon and rice. I would think that is rather high in carbs due to the rice. Maybe you've switched but didn't change the signature.

Thanks! He’s been eating FF. I changed the info in my signature. He could stand to lose a little weight, I would think a couple of pounds. He’s a bigger cat though. Two and a half cans a day would probably be best. Looks like 95 calories/can. Easier to eyeball half cans as 2.5 cans is a little tricky to divide by 4.

I use a kitchen scale to weigh out Rhubarb's meals. I find it easier to do that when I also have other cats snacking from the can, or when the can sizes are varied.

My new civvie (i.e., non-diabetic), "Gus" (13.5 lbs), needs to lose weight (he was in a shelter for 5 months, eating dry food). He's now eating Fancy Feast Turkey & Giblets Classic paté and I figure it at 72 calories per 3/4 can. I give 3/4 can at main meals (breakfast; dinner) and 1/2 can (48 calories) at mid-day and at bedtime (240 calories per day). So far (3 weeks in our home) he is holding his weight, but he is incredibly active and I think some of his fat is being replaced by muscle, which weighs more than fat. I'm weighing him once a week, aiming for weight loss of 2 to 4 ounces a week (according to Dr. Pierson's chapter on feline obesity in www.catinfo.org, that is a safe amount to lose).

Nigel is such a handsome guy. You are doing very well.

Whoever is in your profile is also quite the looker!
That is "Rusty". We lost him last summer. He was about 20 years old. He was with us beginning in the fall of 2010, but had been diabetic at least since 2008, when he was found on the streets. He was fostered for several years by @cjleo and was well regulated when we adopted him through Diabetic Cats in Need. He was our second diabetic kitty (we "learned" on "Stu" and from the amazing people on this Board).
