We are waiting to hear more from the IM vet. Thank you for all of your support, and to those of you who have sent PM's, we thank you as well. I will try to respond to each of you personally a bit later. Right now we are resting on the bed. Tim, I and Whiskers. Soon I need to get ready for work. I should get up and do a half hour of excersice. It would be good for me, but I'm just not sure I want to disturb the kitties right now.

Thank you again.

Re: 02/04 Whiskers 234

Good Afternoon,

We have very bad new. Whiskers adrenal tumor is malignant. The adrenal tumor causes cushings disease. So Whiskers also has cushings disease. cushings disease cause excess cortisone to be produced. This causes a Cushingoid appearance of a pot belly, poor hair coat, bald patches, thin fragile skin, and muscle wasting. There is likely to be extreme thirst. Sadly Whiskers has all these symptoms.

We are going to have Whiskers tested to see how much cortisone the malignant tumor/chushings disease is producing. Than a medication can be prescribed to lower the cortisone production. This will help Whiskers to become stronger. We will also have a chest ex-ray done to make sure the cancer has not spread. To determine if it possible to remove the malignant adrenal tumor/gland. Her immune systerm need to be strengthened to even consider such surgery. Strenghtening her immune system would also improve her quality of life.

I'm really overwhelmed right now. Her appointments for the test and chest ex-ray are this monday, February 7th at 8:00 am. This will also be done at the University of MN.

Re: 02/04 Whiskers 234 Malignant adrenal tumor & Cushings di

I am so sorry to read this Cheryl. You have been through so much already....

But I am encouraged that you already have a plan and it sounds like that plan will help with Whisker's QOL. I will continue to include you and Whiskers in my prayers. My heart goes out to you. ((((HUGS))))

Re: 02/04 Whiskers 234 Malignant adrenal tumor & Cushings di

I'm sorry you got bad news. My heart is breaking for you. I'm glad you know what you are dealing with and are working on a plan.

My dog had many tests for cushings disease and we did a lot of reading (all came back in the grey zone). Hopefully someone here is knowledgeable on it in cats. Sending more hugs.

Re: 02/04 Whiskers 234 Malignant adrenal tumor & Cushings di

((((Cheryl)))) I am so sorry to hear that Whiskers is dealing with a malignant adrenal tumor and Cushings. That is so tough. My greatest thoughts for health, strength, and peace are with you.

The folks here in the Lantus ISG have been so generous helping Cheryl, through DCIN, with the vet costs so far. All that DCIN has collected for Whiskers was used this week. But even with that, Cheryl and Jan had costs they paid themselves.

I have told Cheryl that anything DCIN might receive as contributions for Whiskers will go towards her future diagnostics and treatment. The cortisone expression test and X-ray that Whiskers will get on Monday will be $295. Cheryl does not yet know how much it will cost for the medication to lower the cortisone production.

There is a link in my signature line for the instructions for donating to DCIN. Please let me know through PayPal or check that the donation is for dear Whiskers.

Re: 02/04 Whiskers 234 Malignant adrenal tumor & Cushings di

Cheryl, I'm sorry you got such bad news. I am keeping you in my prayers, and pray that you will have the strength and wisdom to deal with all that is ahead of you.
Praying that the test and ex-rays will guide you on a good course of treatment to get Whiskers stronger, for surgery.

Re: 02/04 Whiskers 234 Malignant adrenal tumor & Cushings di

So sorry to hear this, but maybe something can be done for whiskers--Still dont lose Hope quite yet--Sending Healing vines, prayers & comforting Hugs!!

Re: 02/04 Whiskers 234 Malignant adrenal tumor & Cushings di

Cheryl, I'm so sorry about the news you received today and hope Whiskers can be helped so there is QOL. I know dogs are very different from cats, but one of our therapy dogs at work was diagnosed with Cushings and lived a happy 2 more years after diagnosis with medication. I know Whiskers has other things going on in addition to the Cushings, but I am praying that the vet visit on Monday will provide you with some news that will be hopeful.

Re: 02/04 Whiskers 234 Malignant adrenal tumor & Cushings di

I am just terribly sad to hear this news. I tried posting last night, but ended up in too many tears to finish. Im sorry. :YMSIGH:

I am just so grateful you and whiskers were given the opportunity to figure out what is going on, so she can receive the BEST treatment and QOL possible. She certainly deserves it! And you do to..the relief of knowing she really is in the best hands (both yours, and the university). I have no doubts your sister's energy is surrounding you two right now and will help you in every way you need. :YMHUG:

Im not sure if they mentioned at the U...they have a social services dept as part of the Veterinary hospital/clinic. I used their services once I got Latte's U/S results, when she was dx with the diabetes, and after her departure. They were EXTREMELY helpful. I think they have a guideline of seeing someone 3 times (usually a student). The person I worked with called weekly for many months to check on us, tho. I was even able to bring Latte the first time. Its one thing to go see a real therapist and talk about your cat. Its another thing when the main focus is on people and their connections with their animal companions.

My greatest respect to you, Cheryl. Your hands are full...but your heart is fuller (is that a word, ).

Many :YMHUG:

Re: 02/04 Whiskers 234 Malignant adrenal tumor & Cushings di

(((Cheryl)))

I'm so sorry. I can't imagine how hard this all is.

I don't know if you will find this site helpful, but it will give you more information about adrenal tumors/Cushings. I tend to be a big fan of the knowledge is power approach.

Re: 02/04 Whiskers 234 Malignant adrenal tumor & Cushings di

Thank you everyone for your support.

I have cried a lot yesterday and today. Whiskers is a living link to my sister (whom I
miss terribly), I wanted to hold onto them both for as long as I could,
and now we have this diagnosis. We will continue with Whiskers medical care and
provide the best QOL we can.

The IM vet said while she could benifit from an insulin dose increase, he does not want
us dealing with low blood sugars right now. I'll still do a curve this weekend.

I want to thank Venita with DCIN for all the fundraising they do for us o:-) . We are
so very grateful, I'm not sure what we would do without them, and all of you who have donated. :YMHUG: .

I'm so glad the weekend is going to be here. I can spend some time with Whiskers. She is
really such a sweet, gentle, loving cat. It just breaks my heart what is happening.

Have good night.

P.S. I think my earlier post may have confused some people. Timmy (Tim) is our Maine Coon (feline herpes) cat. My dear husband's name is Jan.

Re: 02/04 Whiskers 234 Malignant adrenal tumor & Cushings di

Dear (((((((Cheryl))))))), My heart goes out to you. Whiskers' diagnosis and plan of treatment, however, give hope that she will get stronger and be more comfortable. That will certainly improve her QOL. You and your family are so brave and so loving and I know that this alone is already helping Whiskers. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Whiskers knows how much you love her and that you are helping her. Keep hope alive!

Many, many :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 02/04 Whiskers 234 Malignant adrenal tumor & Cushings di

Whiskers PMPS is 228 tonight. I know it is the nadir that matters, but she will go lower from here. It is just so strange with all else that is going on. Any ideas?

I know we have been asked to get a before work or before bed BG, but we are just so exhasted and she seems ok. She has also been poked, proded, and tested so much during the last two years, it can't be a great life, and I want her not to feel pain or discomfort. It will now be such a balancing act. It still is disconcerting. I will do spot checks/curve tomorrow. As well as a curve on Sunday, just to make sure she is not going to low on her nadir. It is also so strange her nadir has always been +6. Last weekend it appears her nadirs were at +3. I know the nadir can change, but I just think it is strange. And yes I know we went up from 2 units to 2.5 units 10 days ago at the advise of the IM vet at the U, so lower numbers are to be expected. Normally I would be ecstatic, now I just worried.

Thank you again for all your support. o:-) .

Re: 02/04 Whiskers 234 Malignant adrenal tumor & Cushings di

Thank you all so much. DCIN has received $175 so far for Whiskers' vet visit on Monday. Whatever DCIN receives for Whiskers will be used for any of her vet and medication costs on Monday and in the future.

ETA: DCIN just received another $160. Whiskers' friends have now covered the known costs of Monday's visit. Thank you. So much!
