Well, Max was off to a good start this morning but he's riding high again. I was up at 2:30, 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30 (on a Saturday morning) to get some tests in and he seemed to be doing good thru the night. After the 7:30 test I went back to bed to get caught up on sleep so didn't get the early AM readings in.

The dr put him on Clavomox for a possible UTI, hoping maybe thats what making him bounce so much. Just started it last night so we'll see if that makes a difference.

some cats are just real bouncy, and max seems to be up there with the best of them! look at 1/20: 34 to 405 in 3 hrs, 2 hours later at 594. that's pretty amazing. the good news is that his liver is working just fine!!!

did the vet do a culture to determine there was a UTI? what was the diagnosis based upon? were you seeing symptoms of a UTI?

usually an infection can cause the numbers to be unregulated and high, but i don't think it affects bounciness. i think that is likely because max is hitting low numbers in there and setting off his liver. his dose might still not be quite right. with his amazing trampoline abilities, even though you're getting quite a few tests in, because he bounces so fast you could be missing his low numbers.

there are several other cats here who bounce fast like that. Cini mini, Gracie, Gabby, Tess, Mannie - i'm probably missing some but those come to my mind immediately as very good & fast bouncers! you might benefit from reading their condos and asking questions.

we visited a new vet yesterday and she asked how far I was willing to go. I admitted that for the time being I was pretty much financially tapped out so I think she was just being gentle and trying something that didn't cost so much. I gave her the link to the ss and she was impressed and said she will check it periodically to see how he is doing.

I bought some ketostix that also measure for glucose in the urine and she said that that was a breeding ground for bacteria so rather than do a culture we would treat him for 7 days to see if it has any effect.

Just so you have all of the facts, there are trade offs with not getting a culture. If you get a sterile urine draw (cytocentesis) along with a culture and sensitivity, you will know for sure if there is an infection and the culture will tell your vet what the best antibiotic is to treat the infection. The downside is that this is more expensive than just prescribing an antibiotic. On the other hand, there are a limited number of antibiotics to choose from and if the one prescribed works, you're good to go. If it doesn't work, you're back to square one.

Some diabetic cats, before they are regulated, are more prone to UTIs. Once numbers come down and there isn't glucose in their urine, this becomes less problematic. Getting the Ketidiastix were a good idea so you know both when there's no longer any glucose in Max's urine. There's the added benefit that the Ketodiastix will tell you when he's below renal threshold.

Julie's right. Max is a bouncy boy!

Nice AMPS for Max. Hope the Clavamox clears any UTI up. Tarragon would get UTIs all the time when he was first diagnosed. We havent had one in about 6 months paws crossed. They are much more common in male kitties according to our vet. Have a great night!

Great AMPS for Max! Julie left out Mookie as another bouncy boy. Today he's gone from 425 to 277 and back to 415, all because he dipped his tootsies in green last night. I'm glad you've had Max checked out, and I hope the antibiotic helps. Isn't it great to have a vet who's impressed with all the work you've done in home monitoring?

Hooray for his amps...
and Hooray for Ketstix!

I use a Tidy Cat Breeze litter box for Binks, and it made testing with Ketostix, well... a breeze :-D

have we suggested adding water to his food to you? that's something that can help their bladders - just dilutes things and keeps them peeing plenty. i add nearly equal amounts of water to punkin's food - he was prone to UTI's, but hasn't had a single one since he became diabetic and we switched to canned food and started watering down his food. perhaps that will help max also.
