Some of you are aware that one of our civies, Samantha recently has not been able to keep any food down.
Dominick took her to her vet today and during the initial examination he detected a mass.
He will sedate Samantha enough to get enough xrays to further clarify and he is keeping her overnight.

Samantha is one tough little old lady. Since she found her way to our house (Stray Cat Central) as an adult, there is no way to know her age.
Her vet estimates she is around 12.

I purchased a baby scale and it arrived over the week end. After I put it together I placed it on the dining room table.
Since Sammie was handy I tried it out with her. She is down to 6lbs. Although she has always been a peanut she has never been this light.

Later in the evening I was looking all around the house for her and could not find her in any of her usual spots.
She was in plain sight the whole time - in the dim light of the dining room, on the table, in the scale.
She slept there until morning.

Now, we wait.

Re: 01/27 - civie Samantha could use some vines

Dominick went to see Samantha today and relayed what he understood of the findings to me.
He said she seemed uncomfortable and did not want him to pick her up but managed a purr and appreciated chin scritches.
Sammie goes to a different vet practice than BK, one that Dominick's family used for all the strays that came their way over the years.
This vet was able to get Sammie in immediately a couple years back when she came home with a broken femur. .which they took care of.

The xrays show the mass is pressing on her gut, which is why food will not pass through.
Also, that the mass is surrounding her liver. Liver values are normal so the vet feels the liver has not been compromised. . .yet.
Surgery is out of the question. He does not want to even attempt a biopsy at this time.
The recommendation is prednisone in hopes that the mass will shrink enough to allow food to pass.
He also wants to put her on an antibiotic.
She did poop, however the vet felt it was very dry and recommends some special food (that they conveniently sell) that has more fiber.
Sammie is spending tonight there and will likely be able to come home tomorrow.

I want to see the xrays and the BW. I also want to know why the antibiotic and which one.
Can prednisone shrink a mass?
I have no use for the special food. I know that many of you have methods to add fiber if needed.
Might there be a liquid food supplement that would get more nutrients into her?

I think I will accompany Dominick tomorrow when Sammie is discharged.

All thoughts welcomed and appreciated

Re: 01/27 - civie Samantha - update

Prednilisone (not prednisone) is what is recommended for cats. It can be used to reduce tumors or other types of swelling. A friend's cat had a dime sized mass just below his eye and the pred reduced it to practically nothing. I've also seen it commonly used for treating lymphoma and IBD.

I've seen people add plain pumpkin, or use baby food squash (smaller jars so less waste) to add fiber to a diet.

Good luck with the vetty visit tomorrow. I hope you get to bring Sammie home. :YMHUG:

Re: 01/27 - civie Samantha - update

I had a neighbor who had a cat with a tumor and used one of those two drugs (I don't remember which) that Wendy mentioned and the tumor disappeared. Crossed Fingers and Prayers for Samantha, and hugs for you an Dominick.

Re: 01/27 - civie Samantha - update

Just catching up on this .. I'm sorry to hear about it and I hope the meds and AB's work wonders for your little girl ..

Re: 01/27 - civie Samantha - update

Sandy, we are so sorry to hear about Samantha's dx. I hope that the prednilisone will work and that your little old lady will begin to feel better. Plain canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) or baby food squash will add fiber, as Wendy has suggested. Sending many positive thoughts and healing vines to Samantha.

Re: 01/27 - civie Samantha - update

Dominick and I both went to the vet this afternoon so that we both could ask questions.

He sent us home with:
Prednisolone - 2 week supply, with ramp up and ease off instructions
Amoxi drops
Nutrical - some strange goop in a tube
Vetasyk Capsules - some sort of fiber to sprinkle on her food once a day
Canin canine/feline recovery - some food that supposedly has extra nutrients and is easy to digest. . .

She looks better than I expected and she was sure glad to see us.
She was not the least bit interested in that food the vet sent us home with,
She did eat several chunks of kitty crack. Then I got out the FF and she ate about 3tsp (not all at once) and later turned her nose up at it,
I cracked open a different flavor and she ate another tsp.
She wants to eat but I'm feeding her tsps at a time in hopes that it's easier on her.
I'm going to run to the store and get a variety of foods and flavors and just keep switching them up. Nothing goes to waste with Moochie around.
I'm also going to pick up baby food - turkey, beef and squash (for fiber)
I'll pick up some pill pockets and see if they work for the pred.

I have to pill her and also give her 1 dropper full of the liquid antibiotic each day.

Adventures in manual dexterity - oh boy.

Here is her BW
Here are her xrays

Hello Sandy,

I just read this post. I will be praying for Samantha that the medicines work for her and dissolve the mass.

She looks really cute on the scale.

I hope Samantha responds well to her meds and to all your dedicated feeding of so many flavor varieties - one teaspoon at a time! (((Sandy))) You are such a good mommy bean. cat_pet_icon

Hi Sandy:

I can so relate to what you're going through. Pilling cats is no fun. Some are easier than others, but unless they'll eat the pill IN the pill pocket, they aren't really easy at all. The liquids are easier, since you can just shoot them down their throat (okay, easy isn't the right word). I'm glad to hear she looks better and is interested in eating a little. Baby food is probably a really good idea. All my cats LOVE It - in fact if one is ill and needs it, they all HAVE to have it. Harvey becomes absolutely manic as soon as he hears that "pop" when you open the jar (and I've tried to disguise the sound with closed doors, running water, music, etc., but he can still hear it!).

Sending tons of healing and good appy vines to Samantha and hugs to you and your DH. :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:
