Yesterday's Condo

Last Night:
501 PMPS
297 +7

I just read the notes about backing off on the bupe from Sienne and Marje in yesterday's condo.
I did call the vet about it, and was confused on when he has the right dose. The vet tech did at first suggest giving him less of a dose TID, and then when I questioned more, she said "or I could bring him in and we can hospitalize him". No thanks. I have to go to work for a bit, and his next dose of bupe is due when I get home. I have been giving it to him every 10 hours, and it will be 10 and 1/2 hours by the time I'm home, maybe even later.
They also told me a week ago that with older cats, they often have a good day after the dental (yesterday) and then the 2nd day (today) is worse, and then they feel better on the third day (tomorrow).
He seems to feel fine, and is hanging out on the back of the couch. We went for a short walk in the freezing cold, and he has been eating pretty good, when the flavor suits him (and I'm not saying it's all low carb food..), and hasn't been pacing as much today.
This is what I think I'll do, but I'll check in to see if there are any comments when I get back, before I do it.
Give him the .3ml of bupe when I get back (at 10 and 1/2 hours since his last dose), and then tonight start to do the bupe dose every 8 hours, but a lesser amount. I just find it hard to stop the pre-filled syringe at a specific dose, when giving it to him, but I'll give it a try.

I called the vet, about poo.
He was having some wettish but formed poo while on the Clindamycin (which he is still on, by the way) the days before the dental. The vet said that formed but wet was okay. I believe, (it could have been Ginger's, but I'm pretty certain it was J.D.'s) that he had a normal poo when we got home from the dental on Monday. Yesterday, there was nothing, and I was concerned that he might be constipated as he kept going in and out and in and out and in and out of the box, and sometimes peeing, but mostly nothing, and I was wondering if he could have Miralax or Lactulose (but did not give him any for fear of diarrehea). Well, he just had a big ole watery poo (lot of water) with a little formed poo at the bottom.
I put in a call to the vet, and am waiting for them to call me back.

Off to tbp, to fill out some health insurance forms, and to find out how much health insurance is going up this year

It sounds lik J.D. is starting to recovery from his dental. You really have your hands full right now :YMHUG: - what a lucky kitty he is!

Insurance....blech. Have a great day, Dyana!

Re: 01/23 J.D. AMPS 450, +3 415

So glad JD seems to be doing better
Man, I don't envy you all that med-juggling :-| JD's a very lucky kitty :-D

Have a great day (tbp aside)

Re: 01/23 J.D. AMPS 450, +3 415

Hi Dyana,
Perhaps J.D.'s intestinal problems are owing to the Clindamycin? That antibiotic caused all sorts of problems for Edward last summer, when he had a badly infected bite and it was prescribed. He didn't take a probiotic to counter the effects of the a/b on the digestive system and wound up having to take flagyl to get rid of the diahrea. We have since learned from two doctors that Clindamycin is a very powerful a/b and using it is equivalent to killing a mosquito with a sledgehammer. It literally wipes out all of the good bacteria in the intestinal tract. So I would think that you need to give J.D. a probiotic or some plain Greek yogurt with active cultures.

Glad he's feeling better today. Hang in there!

Hugs from us,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 01/23 J.D. AMPS 450, +3 415

I agree with Ella on the clinda it does not agree with many cats maybe they could give him some other a/b?? sending JD healing vines and snowflakes that he feels better soon :YMHUG: cat_pet_icon

Re: 01/23 J.D. AMPS 450, +3 415, +6 266

He's supposed to be on the Clindamycin for 14 days
I have been giving him FortiFlora as much as I can, trying to give him 1 packet a day.

The vet said formed but wet is okay. That's how it was on his pre-dental days (Saturday and Sunday).

These are on my Discharge Instructions:

Clindamycin
You have been given an antibiotic to use at home. It is very unusual, but some side effects have been reported in pets who are sensitive to antibiotics. If your pet stops eating, develops loose stools, vomits or develops a rash, stop the medication and call the hospital.

Buprenex
Buprenex is a synthetic opiod used for pain management. It is given by mouth but should not be swallowed or mixed in food. It works by absorbing directly into the blood stream through the mucus membranes of the tongue, the insides of the cheeks, the gums, etc. It will not harm your pet if ingested but wil not be as effective. All opiods may cause some degree of constipation or sedation. Rarely, euphoria or hyperactivity can occur. Please call the hospital with any concerns

I have not received a call back from the hospital yet.
I do not know if J.D. has constipation or diarrhea. :?: but his getting in and out of the LB makes me think constipation.

I did just look closer at the buprenex syringes and they are all filled to 0.37mls, not the .3mls I thought. :?

It is now almost 11 hours since his last dose of bupe. I will try to give him half of the dose, and start on a 8 hour dose schedule...I just have to write this down 12:30pm, 8:30pm, and 4:30am, and then work my way to 1:00pm, 9:00pm, and 5:00am which is more manageble for me...eventually, we will ease off to a BID dose of 6:00am and 6:00pm, I guess.???

Re: 01/23 J.D. AMPS 450, +3 415, +6 266

Hi Dyana. FWIW, my vet said that Spot may have loose stool from the anesthesia today. He has not gone at all, but vet also said that may happen also.

Glad JD feels good enough to go outside in the freezing cold for a little walk! I hope he recovers quickly!

Re: 01/23 J.D. AMPS 450, +3 415, +6 266

Hi Dyana,
Interesting reading all your info. w/meds and recovery. Boots is on .1 of the Bup. every 12 hrs. They
only gave her enough to last through tonight. I called and got more, as she seems to eat better
medicated and seems over all more comfortable.

JD takes walks with you? ...cute. Boots is moving a little today. Wish she'd move more.

Re: 01/23 J.D. AMPS 450, +3 415, +6 266

Good luck on changing the bupe dose and schedule. I hope J.D. recovers quickly. It sounds like he is doing better today.

Re: 01/23 J.D. +7 310, +10 353, PMPS HI

Thanks.
He does seem to be feeling better. He ate all his 1st Dinner and just gave himself a brief bath. It must be weird having one fang missing and all those other teefuses missing too.
I guess since he's eating, I'll give him some R. I was going to give him some at +10 since I thought he would be high, but that test wasn't that much different than his +7, so I held off.
I just want a very slow drop, J.D. no dramatics, please.

Re: 01/23 J.D. PMPS HI

Hi Dyana,
You are amazing, juggling all these meds, timing, feeding! I'm glad to hear that J.D. is feeling better. Bless his little heart. cat_pet_icon I hope there's a nice slow descent, absolutely no drama and you can all jump into bed early and sleep tight. till the next meds are due.. take good care. many feel good and heal fast vines to you - mary and oliver

Re: 01/23 J.D. PMPS HI

Dyana,
I am glad to hear JD is feeling a bit better. Also glad he had his little walk today outside! How cute.

Re: 01/23 J.D. PMPS HI

J.D. just had a couple little tiny squirts (sorry to be so graphic) of water poo.

I hope he's all better, in the poo department, tomorrow. Fingers Crossed.

He's supposed to get the ABs for 2 weeks because of the big hole that was left in his bone from the extracted terribly abcessed canine. The vet said something about that normally, they would fill the hole with bone?, but because of something (infection, I think), they decided not to do that.

Can he just go for 2 weeks with diarrhea or whatever this poo issue is? He just had to have a little butt bath.

J.D. just had total water poo, and about 3/4 of a cup of it. He just got another butt tail and back feet and legs bath.
I'm going to bed.

If this were me I would call vet again tomorrow and let them know the med is causing diarrhea and see if they can give him something else clinda is not the only drug for after a dental just many vets prefer it..

Poor J.D. Sending healing feel better vines, and normal poo vines. Poor little guy. Thoughts and prayers for both of you tonight.

Dyana:

When Gabby was having problems with diarrhea, Cassandra (remember her?!) suggested a big gun probiotic: ReNew Ultimate. It's carried in the refrigerated supplement section at most Whole Foods. You start with 1/3 of a capsule BID and work up to 1/2 of a capsule BID.

I do think J.D. needs an AB. Given the abscess, he needs an AB. I think calling the vet given the diarrhea will help him guide you as to whether this is the best AB for J.D.

Cant they change the AB? Hope he feels better, it was a big thing to go through !
Sending Healing Vines to J.D. and hope tomorrow brings a better day..Hugs & Love from us!

hi Dyana

I used the probiotic Sienne suggested when Minkie had diarrhea for over 2 weeks.
Maybe a coincidence but it did clear up around the same time.
