01/18 BuddyM: day 6 of no insulin

I’ve been stalking your ss. Check him 3-4 hours after AMBG and PMBG time to see if green. If you can get a test less than 20 minutes after breakfast and dinner get it if you can’t test before eating. He very well might be in remission. Fingers and paws crossed. :D

I grabbed the one test (+9) when I woke up before him yesterday 101. It seems he goes a bit higher at night with no feeding.

He's a funky monkey and won't go into the kichen by himself at night to eat or go to the litter box. I have to be woken up to take him in the mornings o_O

Thanks for the tip to test 20 minutes after feeding. That's a good plan.
 
I’m still stalking you. If you aren’t already feed a +9 snack, especially on the pm cycle to bring down the morning number.

It's very difficult for me to get the AMPS number. It always has been.. Playing and escorting him around in the garden to get some of the energy worked off. Ears are cold and he's not very receptive to something pressed on his ears in the morning. So I've been giving us a break from the drama now that it's not essential for the insulin shot.

I gather it's still valid to look at the AM +3 numbers to spot an upward trend right? Or do you think we need to make sure overall the numbers stay as low as possible through the night as well?

He had some wet food out at night but the little weirdo will not go into the kitchen by himself to go eat. So then I have to pretty much get up to lead him to the kitchen. And then he wants to go check outside etc. When he thinks we're up, we're up.

No he wasn't. I've only had him inside since April last year. He was feral. We had him neutered last year April, and I wondered if that sudden change in hormones might have something to do with the diabetes coming on so quickly.

But we also tried to have his one lower lid fixed at the same time. It is torn from his rough life. He had to wear a cone for more than a month. That was a sudden change too. From being super active to suddenly having very limited mobility. He gained weight very rapidly... he was 14 pounds in April last year and 18 pounds in November with the diagnosis.

The weight loss will be our next challenge. He's actually up a pound - hovering around 19 now. I wanted to focus on getting the diabetes under control and trying to restrict food when I also have to make sure the bg doesn't crash was too steessful. I just gave him food when he wanted. But no more excuses now. We have to get him back down to 14.

Ah. How wonderful he found you! I helped a friend’s cat lose weight using the formula in cat info.org. Max gained weight with Lantus and feeding so often to keeping ,him safe. I’m glad Buddy is doing s well. :D

He's been a true angel. I am amazed how patient he's been with the testing especially. It's been challenging to not break that new trust we've formed. i feel incredibly honored that he still likes me after all I've put him through! Love the little dude so much.
 
Hi. Here are the directions to start an OTJ trial. I think you can count 1/15 as day 1. I hope you start posting daily so we can cheer you on! Congrats!

Directions for blue number. Don't panic but post before you decide whether to shoot so we can have a discussion.
After 14 days of no insulin, we have a party!!
Sometimes the trial doesn't work the first time and we have to give a little more support in the form of resuming insulin. It's not the end of the world if that happens; we just give him/her the support needed. Our goal is a strong remission and it's better to take our time to get that than to rush into remission just to have it fail later on.
Good luck with the trial!!!
Once he/she is through the trial successfully, you enter a new phase. Your cat is still diabetic but has now become diet-controlled. Continue feeding low carb food in the manner successful for your kitty. If you decide to change his/her feeding schedule, let your meter be your guide to the best times to feed. Avoid medications with sugar in them and steroid medications unless they are medically essential. Continue testing blood glucose weekly for the first month and then monthly forever. It's a good idea to weigh him/her monthly. Weight should remain stable. If he/she seems "off" or sick, or is showing signs of diabetes (excessive drinking, eating, urinating, weight loss), test his/her blood glucose right away. Keep the teeth and gums clean and healthy; dental issues can bring a cat out of remission. If you see rising blood glucose numbers, it's time for a vet visit.

Instructions for starting the OTJ trial
Start the trial on the next green pre shot.
If he/she is green at your normal test times, no need to test further until the next "PS" time; just feed small meals and go about your day. If he/she is blue at your normal "PS", feed a small meal and test again after about 3 or 4 hours. If his/her number is lower 3-4 hours after a meal, then the pancreas is working!
Post every day so we can monitor your progress and see if any tweaks are needed. He/she may have a sporadic blue number. Don't panic but post before you decide whether to shoot so we can have a discussion.
