Panzers vet visit seemed to okay. How wrong I was about them. I found out that they know nothing about pancreatitis. They gave me 2 cerenia pills & a prescription to send to chewy for miritazapine for what I thought was 30 pills, come to find out it was for 2 pills. As we all know when treating pancreatitis you need to have plenty of cerenia, zofran (ondanstran) & miritazapine (miritaz) & pain meds. They absolutely refused buprenorphine & didn't offer any other pain meds but knew I had gabapentin. When I requested more Cerenia they refused & said if he was still puking after taking those 2 I needed to bring him in for another vet visit. I called them again on Friday & lied & said the antibiotic was making him puke in an attempt to get more Cerenia. They said they weren't giving me anymore cerenia & they were closing for the weekend to take him to the ER vet. I told them I can't afford that & asked if they had looked at Panzers records from the other vet. That the other vet gave Panzer a 4pk of cerenia with 6 refills. I said when treating pancreatitis they need to be given Cerenia zofran & miritazapine daily for 2wk to up 2mons sometimes longer just depending on how long the pancreatitis flare lasts. I told her I know my cat & I know what I need to do to help him get past this. She said I'm sorry you will have to go to the ER vet. I said okay I will call you on Monday & hung up. I've called a couple of other vets since then one was hollostic & wants $139 up front before an exam NOPE the second one it had an option to ask someone questions so I asked the lady how do you treat cats with chronic pancreatitis? She said we start with a special veterinary food STRIKE ONE then we give meds for vomiting nausea & pain THUMBS UP I told her okay my cat is diabetic & has been for 6yrs so he only eats wet food & I test him 8-10xs a day & I treat pancreatitis with Cerenia Zofran Mirataz & Gabapentin. I said he's having a pancreatitis flare now & the vet I am seeing doesn't understand how to treat it & they aren't giving me the meds I need & he also has a UTI & they lied to me & said that Wedgewood pharmacy couldn't compound the liquid antibiotic that he's on for it. I said are you talking new patients she said yes. I explained to her about how he's not up to date on his rabies vaccine & why & that he only gets the purevax but can't right now because he's sick. She said that was fine & I told her how spicy he was & how his head & front paws have to be covered & he has to be held down & how I give him gabapentin the night before & the day of an appointment. He has an appointment on the 26th. Also the antibiotic went a lot smoother last night but it is causing him extreme diarrhea!!!

Now the main reason for my post. I am scared because Panzer has been back & forth in the litter boxes so many times & the only thing coming out is diarrhea. He's tried & tried to pee & nothing... finally he peed 3xs now I've been stalking him every time he goes to the litter box & it seems like it starts right after I give him the antibiotic? I don't know what to do. Should I keep giving him the antibiotic tomorrow is supposed to be the last day of it but there's quite a bit left.

Another question I have is how much D Mannose can I give him per day. I've given it to him with every meal today so that's 4xs he's gotten it 1/4 of a tsp each time. He ate his regular fancy feast chunky chicken feast @ PMPS tonight. I'm not sure if I should gradually start giving the other flavors yet or not? We are out of Cerenia now, he took the last one an hour before AMPS feeding. I have lots of Zofran & Ondanstran & some miritaz for his ear but I don't know if it alone will work. I thought about putting Slippery elm in size 5 gel cap & giving him those a couple of times a day (in place of the cerenia?) I'm still giving it to him in the evening as well with baby food. He's been doing well with that & the probiotic in the morning & eating in general, but I'm not sure how he's going to do tomorrow without the Cerenia.

What do I do if he goes back to having a hard time peeing again this evening after that dreaded antibiotic? I can't lose my baby I have no money I've used up the DCIN $ for the year on a vet that refuses to help me & him. PLEASE HELP ME FIGURE THIS OUT

How many days has he been on the antibiotic? What is the name of the antibiotic? Which vet prescribed the antibiotic? Was it the same unhelpful vet that is just telling you to take him to the ER. This is horrible. What do you have for pain? If it is only Gabapentin then give him that because it sounds like he may be very uncomfortable. It could be that he’s just going frequently because of the diarrhea, but you should be able to tell the difference by hos stance in the litter box — does it look like he’s trying to pee pr trying to poop. It should look different. I actually hope it’s just the diarrhea because that should stop if you stop the antibiotic and get a different antibiotic from a decent vet.

Tonight is night 6 on the antibiotic tomorrow is supposed to be the last day of it but there's still quite a bit left it's the same unhelpful vet that won't give anymore cerenia & lied &:said the Vèraflox can't be compounded & told me to go to the ER. I thought about going to my old vet & apologizing & begging them to take him back but I don't think it would do any good & even if they did they won't see him until he has that dumb rabies vaccine. He's up in the air when he's doing the diarrhea & then down low to pee & even lays down in the box sometimes. Every time he goes in there I follow & I sit on the chair & beg God to let him pee. I gave him gabapentin last night probably about 50mg & it didn't seem to affect him. He slept with me & he will again tonight. I'm wondering if I should give him the whole 100mg of gabapentin tonight. It's hard to know exactly how much I'm giving him because of it being in a capsule.

I'm going to call them on Monday &:say he's done with the antibiotic & I know there going to say great bring him in so we can recheck his urine. I'm not sure if I should say you are supposed to wait 7 days after the antibiotic is completed or take a clean catch in, in the container they provided. I asked for a different antibiotic on day 2 of taking it because he doesn't do well with oral medication but they refused & lied about it not being able to be compounded. I'm not sure what to do I absolutely don't think the UTI is gone though & I'm wondering if the cystnosis that they did when taking urine from his bladder didn't do damage

I decided I'm not giving the Vèraflox I think it's causing him to not be able to pee. I can't put him through that anymore. I hate lieing but that's what I'm going to do come Monday morning. What antibiotic should I ask for? I don't think there going to give me much choice but I'm telling them it has to be in a pill form.

What antibiotic should I ask for?
You don't ask for a particular antibiotic. With the results of a urine culture, they can see what bacteria is present, then what antibiotics will be appropriate to mop up that bacteria. There might be more than one possible AB, but you need to know which bacteria is present first. And hope it's not a type of bacteria that is sometimes resistant to a particular AB. I had that happen last year, so after two weeks of antibiotic that was supposed to help, then a second culture telling us the AB didn't work, I had to try the second AB type.

I can't write in the comments section on my spreadsheet because once you write over there it's impossible to get back on it on your phone at least.

Wanted to recap his day of meds & some+11 PMPS 1-16 last Cerenia/Zofran AMPS Cosequin+3 snack AMPS D Mannose & probiotic (baby food) +7.5 AMPS lunch D Mannose PMPS Zofran & D Mannose+ 5 PMPS DID NOT GIVE VÈRAFLOX
+6 PMPS D Mannose Pooped soft but not diarrhea+7 PMPS approximately 75mg Gabapentin with baby food I think he could taste it so I sprinkled Fortiflora on it & he ate all of it. He came in as I was finishing up scooping cat boxes & peed :bighug: He ate his normal favorite fancy feast chunky chicken pate's 3xs today. Hoping & praying he does okay without Cerenia. I will give him Zofran @+11 PMPS & I have Slippery elm & size 5 gel caps ready to go along with a size 5 pac n cap measure thing which I may be able to see if I can put gabapentin in these as well then I don't have to give it in baby food, they are small enough for a pill pocket. Will be trying some things out tomorrow! Prayers 🙏 for Panzer & all the other kittys & mommies & daddies who need them 🙏

Well am I allowed to refuse the Vèraflox since it caused diarrhea & made it hard for him to pee?

Your vet isn't home with you so you can give Panzer what doesn't make him feel lousy. I'm sorry the vet is not up to speed on treating pancreatitis. I can only hope that the vet is personally diagnosed with pancreatitis and can then understand why pain meds are needed. A bit of karma would help a lot.

As far as the diarrhea, I am a big fan of S. boulardii. It's a probiotic that as far as I'm concerned, is magic. It will take care of his diarrhea in a day or two. You start with about 1/4 of a capsule twice a day in his food. You can increase to about 1/3 of a capsule if needed. FYI - it also works for humans!!

I found an article one of many on how to treat a cat with pancreatitis & although I don't want to be to forward with this vet & lose them before I find another one although they aren't helping him at all, I'm going to print it out & leave it for her & ask her to please read it & think about helping me treat Panzer the proper & humane way according to this & many articles.

Panzer did pretty good today. He's still pooping quite a bit but it's not diarrhea soft though. He's getting litter stuck on his paws like he did when he was unregulated but it's to be expected in the higher numbers he's having right now. He's also having hind leg weakness so I pilled him a Zobaline @ PMPS feeding since he hasn't had one for awhile. He's peed several times & has been drinking water from the bowl. I'm worried about leaving him for a long stretch tomorrow for work so I'm going to hurry through it as best as I can. My client said I could skip the guest bedrooms this time as they haven't been used so that helps. I've got some really good clients for sure 😍

Well am I allowed to refuse the Vèraflox since it caused diarrhea & made it hard for him to pee?
Are you sure it was the Veraflox that made it hard for him to go? You stopped it and then he got back to normal? And he has a urinary tract infection? They did a urinalysis right (with the visit that DCIN paid for?) and bacteria was seen under the microscope? Are you going to ask for a different antibiotic?

I'm not sure if it was the Vèraflox that made it hard for him to go because the trouble peeing didn't start right away after taking the antibiotic. Once I stopped it & started giving him more D Mannose & getting his cosequin in him either by food or by pilling him then he started peeing again. Yes he has a UTI & DCIN paid for it. The results of his bloodwork & urinalysis are on my previous post in a PDF file & there are pictures of it on the post & it's also on the labs tab of my spreadsheet. I think they are closed today because it's Martin Luther King Day & some of the places I wanted to go to today are closed. Once I take the clean catch in that I get from Panzer I'm assuming they will test it while I'm there & I am telling them to put Vèraflox on his chart as a med that he can't take due to bad side effects. I will also remind them that he needs something in a pill form & hopefully they will give me something that will clear it up. I'm almost positive he still has a UTI. He didn't finish that one & he wore quite a bit of it. Some cats might do well with oral medication but Panzer is definitely not one of them. @Suzanne & Darcy

Yes. I thought so. I just wanted to make sure because there have been a lot of posts on the threads and I was remembering that he did have a UTI — obviously that’s why they gave him the Veraflox — although, it could have been from some other infection that I just did not know about. The best thing is for them to send out the urine for a culture and sensitivity testing, but if not, they could try a different antibiotic. Have you ever tried Zenequin with him before? The only reason I mention it is because it is one pill once a day so you don’t have to go through it two times a day. I do remember that he has been on doxycycline before did that work in the past?

I believe he has been on Zeniquin before & it didn't work for him but I would have to look back through my posts to be sure. He's super easy to pill especially if it will fit in a pill pocket but I also have gotten pills in him by putting it in his mouth & holding his head back & he swallows it. He always drinks water after pilling now even with pill pockets, it's like he knows SMART he has been on doxycycline before as well & it worked sometimes & sometimes it doesn't. Unfortunately it costs around $500!to do a culture & send it to the lab, ridiculous I know!!!

The receptionist at the vet called me back & told me I could bring in a clean catch whenever I can & pay for it then.(her words) Little do they know that was a test question & they failed... because we all know that your supposed to wait until 7 days after they have taken the antibiotic. I'm going to take it up there either tomorrow or Wednesday though & see what they say & I will have my print out on how to treat a cat with chronic pancreatitis with me as well.
@Suzanne & Darcy

even with pill pockets, it's like he knows SMART he has been on doxycycline before as well & it worked sometimes & sometimes it doesn't.
So I guess it’s just trial and error on the antibiotics (since they charge too much for a culture). What they can at least do is look under the microscope and tell if the bacteria is spherical, rod shaped or spiral shaped. This will give them an idea of what to prescribe.

Hope you can get a sample after he has been off the Veraflox for a while.

I know he still has a UTI & I know I should wait but I'd rather try to get him something now because he has an appointment at a different vet on January 26th. I am going to write down what you said to do & nicely suggest they do that.

FWIW, I live in the deep south of the US, where vet costs are a bit lower than the rest of the country, and I pay $480 for a culture and sensitivity. The cost comes from the lab, not the vet, or at least that's what I'm seeing on my charges.
