Good morning, Cheryl & Whiskers.. I hope you both have a wonderful day! Full of beautiful blues!

Re: 01/11 Whiskers AMPS 364 +3 213

Hello Christie and Nicole,

Our vet called today, regarding the UTI we decided if she gets another one to do the C&S.
Regarding her ear infection it is yeast and bacteria. He does not have experiance with Xymoc HC, he said we could try it first and see if it works. If not than we would go to the Mometamax. I think that is reasonable

Whiskers plus three was a nice 213. I'm at work now. I'll post our PMPS when I get home.

Have a nice day. cat_pet_icon

Re: 01/11 Whiskers AMPS 364 +3 213

If you recall, that is what Baby's ear infection was.. Yeast & Bacteria.. the antibiotic cleared it right up.. good luck :-D

Re: 01/11 Whiskers AMPS 364 +3 213

Hi Nicole,

Thanks, I wasn't sure what Baby had, so it is good to know. I feel more comfortable with the Zymox, it's only 1% HC. I think the Mometamax is a stronger steroid.

Re: 01/11 Whiskers AMPS 364 +3 213

Hi Cheryl,
Dr. Hardy is the one we saw last at the U (he will tell you not to test as much as I did ;-) ). Otherwise, he was fine.

Glad you are getting things sorted out with your other vet (uti/ear drops, etc).

That +3 looks great for Whiskers! Wonder where she ended up near nadir time???

Just got home from work and remembered the name...wanted to let you know before it slipped my mind. Gotta go help a cat get some energy out. Have a good one!

Re: 01/11 Whiskers AMPS 364 +3 213 PMPS 402

PMPS 402. Bounce. It really bothers me that Whiskers has been pink, red, or black for most all her amps and pmps for the last six weeks.

Re: 01/11 Whiskers AMPS 364 +3 213 PMPS 402

preshots are not what matter so much. What matters is the nadir. Since you do not have any pm tests past pmps since the increase, its hard to say what is happening. Tonights ps could be a bounce from earlier today...or one of the overnights. Any chance you could get a pm +3 or +4 just to see where she is going? That might be helpful in understanding WHY Whiskers is having such high ps.

ETA: I hate to say it, but if you want a better understanding of whats going on you have to test more...aiming for a nadir (+5-+7) during the day and/or +4-+7 pm). Is there any chance you can get something closer to the possible nadir - day or night? Its quite possible Whiskers broke her bounce today and is now bouncing from a blue or even green seen today.

Re: 01/11 Whiskers AMPS 364 +3 213 PMPS 402

Hi Carolyn,

Mon-Fri at AMPS +6 my husband and I are both at work. PMPS is 5:00am. I really feel like a failure when people ask why I can't do these. I try to do the AMPS +6 on the weekend.....Whiskers keeps peeing on our floors it has been really bad this week. The vet and I think it is behavioral. I have to agree as I have started testing more, urinating outside the box has increased...She cries at test time even though I have tried to make it a positive thing, treats, praise....Maybe we just can't do this.........tears now...gotta go....

Hi Cheryl,

first thing, I noticed you had gotten your PMPS, and you opened a new thread, no need to do that, k? You just update your current condo/thread (this one) with the PMPS, but dont worry about that thou. That's just a little housekeeping.

Second thing, most important: I know how you came to adopt Whiskers (((((hugs))))) you and DH did a wonderful thing for this kitty when you took him into your home. Who knows where he could of ended up? Well, he's with you both now, and you can do this. Do not feel like a failure. Whiskers loves you both and I know you love him back lots.

As for unable to test more, I am with you there. I am working now, have been for a while, I wasn't when Luna was first on insulin so I was able to monitor him a lot more. But now, I too am missing half my data cuz of work (not that I'm complaining! I love my job!) But what is Luna doing in the AMPS cycle? :(
So I fill in the blanks in the evening cycle. I still go to bed at a decent time, I have DBF (dear boyfriend) who stays up a little bit later than me and who helps with testing and feeding Luna, plus we finally have the oh so valuable automated timed feeder for thaose overnite snacks and daytime snacks when we are not here.
(a little tip, if you look at my SS, I fill in that I'm at "work", this way noone bugs me  )
Plus we have the precious weekends off to do curves and - oh well, I guess it's multiple testing  But that's just me. EBID (every bean is different)
When we say "test more" it doesn't mean test every hour, or run home and get a AMPS +6, if I lived close to home, I would! if I could, but I can't, so I rely on the times I am home.
You test when you can, couple of checks after PMPS, a before bedtime check, set an alarm on a weekend nite when you know you are not working, for midnite and see where he is at, plan for a curve at least one day of the weekend.

So let me just say, yes you can! It's frustrating, and it's not fair, we've been there too, all of us here have been there.
Don't feel down or terrible or any of that negative stuff, k? We are all in this together, and here for you for support and guidance.

Re: 01/11 Whiskers I'm not sure we can keep going......

((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((Cheryl)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Biggest hugs to you!!!!!

I didnt mean to come off blunt, or harsh (it was late :? ). It seemed you were very frustrated with her ps's and just wanted to point out that there may be a reason, but we dont know because there isnt necessarily a lot of data. Not everyone can or wants to test often. That is understood amongst most of us here. I think the majority of people work. Few can get a mid cycle test during the week, just like you! If you cant get it, you cant get it. Thats when you need to let go of the ps frustration. You are doing all you can!

I dont know your work schedule or shot times. I dont know if its possible to move the shot time so that you can get a test right before you go to bed? I CHOSE (not everyone will do this) to wake my butt up at 5:45 each a.m. It wasnt pretty! This way I was able to get a +3 most mornings, sometimes later. AND, it allowed me to get a near mid cycle test in the evenings before I went to bed. I think Ann/Tess just moved their time earlier so she could get an extra hour in before going to work. I know you are juggling a lot with all your pets. So again, not sure if moving shot time is reasonable or helpful for you.

You have been doing a GREAT job getting checks on weekends. That is when most people get their curves. If thats all you can do, its better than nothing....FOR SURE! It will help give you an idea of what might be happening during the week, too.

You are doing fine. Really you are. This is so overwhelming, and you have so much on your plate in many ways. Please be gentle with yourself. All you can do is all you can do....which is way more than the average person in your case!

Regarding the urination...could be the infection and the a/b is not appropriate. Could be behavioral. I just hope you can get in to see one of the vets at the U for a consult or initial appt. I think if anyone can help give you a full understanding of everything that is going on...they can. So knowledgeable!

More hugs:

SPeaking of work....hi ho hi ho, its of to work I goooooooooooooooooooo
Try and have a WONDERFUL day Cheryl!

Re: 01/11 Whiskers I'm not sure we can keep going......

((((Cheryl))))

The entire process of learning your cat is diabetic, learning to test, managing insulin, etc., is hugely overwhelming. I don't think there is a person here who hasn't felt shell-shocked, been in tears, or both. Like with everything else related to Whisker's FD, you're in good company. We get it. We really do.

Carolyn is correct. Many of us have altered our initial shot times to accommodate our kitties. I've certainly done that. I will stay up to ridiculous hours to test if I need to but that's because It's easier for me to stay up than to respond to an alarm in the middle of the night. I also know that if Gabby isn't dropping by +4, the rest of the cycle will be OK. Knowing your cat's patterns is also part of the learning process. If you've already thought through the shot schedule, then it is what it is. If you can get some additional tests at night, on weekends, or on holidays that will be fine.

Once you make sure that the inappropriate urinating isn't at least in part medical, we can help you try to sort through if there are behavioral problems. From what I recall, you have several cats at home. One immediate thought I have is whether one of the other cats is intimidating Whiskers whenever he tries to use the litter box and would more litter boxes help? (Usually, the number is 1.5 litter boxes per cat.)

The people here are a tremendous resource. How can we help?

Re: 01/11 Whiskers I'm not sure we can keep going......

(((Cheryl))) My Bear Man had inappropriate elimination problems, and I know how emotionally draining that is. Add on the fatigue and worry that you are going through, and I know you feel overwhelmed. I hope that your friends here can support you through this.

Re: 01/11 Whiskers I'm not sure we can keep going......

hey, kiddo...with everything else you are dealing with...fully understand your frustration, and exhaustion.

and with whiskers trying to assimilate into your environment, it adds to the burden. she's going to have some behavioral adjustments...she may not show it yet, but i believe she has landed in the safest place she could have given the circumstances, and on some level, she knows it.

just dropping in to say that from my point of view, you are doing a great job...we do what we can.
you have to be sure that you are caring for cheryl right along with all the others you are supporting and comforting at this time.
not much help, but it is a very important thing to remember...

Re: 01/11 Whiskers I'm not sure we can keep going......

Just dropping in to give my support and to give you a hug. I'm going to also add that if Whisker's IE problem is behaviorial, you may be able to give him buspar or prozac to help. My Ralph was having IE problems and the buspar helped. Of course, you will probably need to wait until the UTI has run it's course to see if it is behaviorial.

Re: 01/11 Whiskers I'm not sure we can keep going......

Hi Cheryl,
Carolyn is right, see if you can get an appointment at the university. If not, there is a vet in Minnetonka that sees several diabetic cats (one owner is here on the board). This vet saw Harley when he was first diagnosed and had DKA. I will PM you with name, clinic and phone number). I am off to work so it won't be until later.

You have my cell phone number - please call if you need anything. I will help as I can. You are doing a good job with Whiskers. Always remember that.

Pattie

Thank you everyone for your support. Carolyn, you did not sound blunt, you always offer, kind insightful advise. Sometimes I am just overwhelmed and exhausted, and wish I could do so much better for Whiskers. It's not anyone else it's me. I have learned so much here and am sure I will continue to learn more. Thank you again everyone cat_pet_icon ,
