What a scary morning with Regs!

I honestly feel like Regs could have died today if I hadn’t come home from work.

I had put some higher-LC food in his Petlibro for +3, but he completely ignored it! Thankfully, I managed to get home at +4 and caught him dropping fast. Even after eating, he kept dropping, and it took a spoon of MC to finally slow things down.

I know he wasn’t actually hypo, but I can’t stop thinking about what could have happened if I hadn’t come home.

Now I’m back at work, practically shaking and struggling to concentrate. I don’t even want to imagine what could have happened, but of course my brain keeps going there.
And I can’t keep sneaking home every day without risking my job.

He uses his Petlibro just fine at night, so maybe he’s simply too full after breakfast? I’m thinking about splitting his breakfast so he’ll actually eat his +3 snack.

Deep breathe, you did great today.

Lovely set of numbers for Reg today. Nadirs where you want them to be when following SLGS. I think your idea of leaving him a little hungrier first thing in the morning is an excellent idea. I hope he'll give you numbers like this again soon, when you are home during the day to monitor. And see if he would have dropped further, or decided on his own that he should visit the feeder. Once I had confidence Neko would go to the feeder, it made it easer to leave her.

His nadir today was around where it has been traditionally.

It can take 20-30 minutes from getting food before the carbs impact the BG. You want food to flatten him out in nice numbers, not necessarily bump him too high.

Thank you so much, Wendy! ❤️ I really appreciate all your help and patience with me.

Regs barely ate his lunch today, just about 0.35 oz and a little gravy. But he had his usual breakfast and almost another 1.5 oz by +4, what is the size of his lunch so I’m hoping he was just still full.

I’m honestly feeling pretty emotionally drained lately. It’s not even the lack of sleep anymore, it’s the constant worrying about every number. Too high, too low, what if he drops when I’m not home? What if the pre is not high enough to give him Lantus?

Rob thinks we should reduce the dose, even though Regs hasn’t gone below 90. I think he just sees how much this is affecting me and wants to spare me some of the anxiety. And I keep worrying about what will happen once his depot is fully built up. What if he starts dropping even more?

Thankfully, nobody at work has complained about me leaving, but there are days when I simply can’t, like tomorrow and Monday. I know I need to build more confidence in him using the feeder, but what if he doesn’t go to it when he needs to? And why does he find it at night and not in the mornings? Tomorrow I will put 1 oz from breakfast in the feeder and hope he will be hungry by +3

I understand that the goal is to keep him surfing in those nice numbers with food, but I still catch myself wondering how far he might have dropped without it. And yes, I know these are exactly the numbers we want with SLGS, and part of me is so happy for him! But it’s hard to enjoy them when I’m constantly worrying, especially at work.

Hopefully he’ll give us another beautiful cycle like this on the weekend when I’m home and can actually enjoy it instead of panicking!

His depot is already full, today is showing you what it can do. My comment on ideal nadirs meant you don't (at this point in time) have to worry about another increase.

Does Reg have a spot he typically sleeps? Is the feeder close to that? My petfeeders made enough noise that Neko would come running from the opposite side of the house when she heard it. But that's over time and consistent feeding time so she was probably already on alert for it.

There is nothing wrong with taking a brief breather from a dose, a temporary reduction. I used to do that occasionally when Neko was flirting with a reduction but keeping me up all hours at the night. With TR those reductions were even lower. I'd take down the dose for a couple days/nights, then go back up when refreshed. You gotta take care of you in order to take care of Reg. :bighug:

Hi Britta,
I am still very new, but this does look like a beautiful cycle. And: I understand the worry 💗 I feel like it can be helpful to consciously think about what actually going right. You and Briggs both did great today 💜

Thank you so much, Wendy! I’m really relieved to hear that his depot is already full. I was afraid the insulin would become even more powerful once it was fully built up. And I’m so glad we don’t have to worry about another increase right now, or hopefully anytime soon!

Regs usually sleeps in or behind his cat tree and the feeder is right next to it. I can actually see on the camera that he’s already waiting for his nighttime snack before the feeder opens! 😂 And when we were on vacation, he reliably ate his lunch from the feeder too, so I guess he knows the routine pretty well. I really hope he just wasn’t hungry earlier today.

And thank you for sharing your experience with temporary reductions. Just knowing that taking a little breather is an option takes some pressure off. I really hope I won’t need it, though, because we’re finally starting to see better numbers, and all I want is for him to feel better, both with his diabetes and his neuropathy. And I’m sure better glucose control can only help his overall health, especially with his CHF.

Most of all, thank you for being so understanding and patient with me. Your support really means a lot and always helps bring me back from the edge when I start panicking 🥰

Thank you so much, Carina! You’re absolutely right, I really need to remind myself of the things that are going well instead of always worrying about what could go wrong. Easier said than done sometimes especially when you are at work and just feel helpless. But I know the numbers are good for him and I should be happy that he gets some diabetes relief, again easier said than done 😂 I really appreciate your kind words 🥰

You’re really doing such an incredible job with Regs, Britta. I know you’ve been through so much with him and you worry about him constantly. How could you not?

I completely understand the stress it is putting on you and agree that Wendy has given some great suggestions.
If you need to give him a temporary reduction to give you both a little break that’s a good suggestion (I’ve had to do that myself with Ivy on occasion, sometimes after five or six nights of me being literally up all night long, I just can’t function and I’ve had to give her a tiny reduction just to give us both a break).

And hopefully keeping him a little hungrier for his lunch and snacks might help. It’s certainly worth a try.

Hopefully, he will learn to consistently eat from the feeder. And it’s great that you have been able to watch him on the camera and know that he is hearing it and waiting for it to open so at least you know he’s trained enough to be looking for his food.
Sending you many warm, hugs, and lots of support. Don’t forget to take care of you too.

Thank you so much, Staci! ❤️ Your words really mean a lot to me, especially coming from someone who knows exactly how stressful and exhausting this can be. And I really appreciate you taking the time to reply when you already have so much on your plate with Ivy. I was so happy to hear earlier that she’s finally feeling better!

And Wendy has been amazing with all her help and suggestions. I was really spiraling earlier, and she helped me calm down and walked me through everything.

I think sometimes I forget that I need a little break too. I’m so focused on giving Regs the best life possible that I forget to take care of myself. Every waking moment, I’m thinking about his next glucose reading, whether he’ll eat, and what might happen next. I don’t want to get out anymore because what happen if I’m away and have fun and his glucose just drops? It’s exhausting sometimes and earlier I really had a bad breakdown at work.

I’m really hoping that spreading out his meals and getting him used to the feeder will make things a little easier for both of us. He just needs to stop ignoring it in the mornings! 😂

But Regs is worth every bit of worry, effort, and care. He’s such a special boy, and I just want to do what’s best for him.

Are you putting some extra special treats on top of the food in the feeder? Something LC, of course. That might be enough to get him to get up and respond.
Thats a great idea, thanks Mary. He is so much into freeze dried everything at the moment that this really could help. Will try that today!

I totally understand exactly what you are saying and how you are feeling Britta 💕
Regs is indeed worth every sacrifice! And you are doing everything in your power to give him the best care.
We have to take it one day at a time.

They say around here feline diabetes is a marathon, not a sprint. And I do think it’s true. So we must pace ourselves as best we can.

If you need to do a reset for your strength and mental health, do it. Even if for a day or 2.
It really helps 🥰
We are rooting for you and Regs and you’re doing great. Don’t forget to breathe.
And have some chocolate (or whatever your vice is).
Sending lots of hugs and love to you and Regs 💕 :bighug: :bighug: :bighug: 💕
