Hello, all. I rarely post and just listed this in the Lantus group - maybe this is a more appropriate place to post?
Here you go and THANK YOU!

We are doing a blood glucose curve for Todd today, he's 14+ years and has been on Lantus for over 2 years. He only eats wet food, one can morning/one can PM. Lactulose for constipation (which I know can affect bg). And then 1 tsp pumpkin, AM/PM.

However, we leave out plain chicken broth/no sodium 24 hours a day because of constipation.

When doing the glucose curve today, we didn't leave the broth out as we normally do.

Does broth significantly affect bg levels? I wouldn't think so, but I was curious about the experience of others. Thank you!

My friend gives her FD kitty chicken broth as well for his constipation. It doesn't normally raise his BG. Is it possible your cat developed an allergy to chicken? My cat Smoky ate chicken for 10 years with no ill effects. He now has a severe allergy to chicken.

Thank you for this input! When we test him tomorrow we'll have to see if he has higher readings on the broth...

I would think broth would be fine.

If you're trying to encourage drinking you should try a pet drinking fountain. My kitties love the running water. We got one for them for Christmas and they liked it so much we got a second one for upstairs.

My kitties loved the drinking fountain but it got scummy so fast and was such a pain to clean. Are they making them better now?

The one I got has been easy to keep clean. I take it apart and clean it with soapy water once a week and add water as needed. Hasn't felt scumy... Just some hair and food bits on the washable filter. This is the one I got. I liked the one I got at Christmas and bought another.... The second one the pump wasnt strong like the first one so I returned it and they sent a new one that works fine.

The sodium in the broth caught my eye. I never knew or thought about this until a year ago; sodium and salt are not the same. Obviously failed chemistry in HS, twice! From a Google search "Salt and sodium are not the same thing. "Salt" is the term commonly used for sodium chloride (NaCl) which is table salt. Sodium chloride is just 40% sodium and 60% chloride. One teaspoon of table salt contains 2,325 mg of sodium" I don't know what size font is required on food labels, maybe a negative #? Just as bad as known side effects: may cause blindness, stupidity, too many cats.

And it's cute too! I'm going to try it. Thanks for the tip.

Hi @spj,
When my cat was first diagnosed 10 years ago his blood glucose levels were very high, and I used to give him warm chicken broth (in addition to water) every day to try to keep him well hydrated. I found that the better hydration seemed to reduce his blood glucose levels....
