Very late post today. More very disgusting poops several times today 😭
Poor baby. She must feel like crud.
She’s eating ok though 🙏

She had a messy poop when it was time to go to the vet and I had to try to clean her up and rush to the vet. They even clipped some messy fur under her glorious tail to help 😭

She got a B12 shot and they have to order a bottle for me for next week to use at home.

Can we use U 100 insulin syringes with B12? (The syringe needles they showed me were very large) 😱
I thought there was a post about that yesterday.

I decided at 7 am today that I needed to make her new lamb recipe with the new completer to see if that makes a difference.
Her prior completer had an expiration date in June. So I thought maybe that caused an issue since it was used in her food.
Or, as others have mentioned, perhaps her lamb novel protein isn’t working for her any longer.

My vet thinks I should stop the S. Boulardii since it appears to be doing nothing at this point. Also will attempt to stop the Ondansetron again. 🙏it doesn’t cause an eating issue.

I had activated her Libre yesterday, and this morning she was in a low BG range (70s on a handheld meter). So of course the damned sensor failed from low BG 🤬

We sure appreciate all the vines and good wishes from all of our friends here. It means a lot to us.

Is the B-12 dose 0.25 ml?

If so, then you draw to the 25 unit line on a U-100 insulin syringe.

Note to anyone reading that you would draw to a different line on a U-40 insulin syringe.

Staci, I’m assuming they ordered you a bottle of B-12 cyanocobalamin that’s the same strength they used today, but it would be a good idea to confirm the dosage (in mls) they want you to give when you pick it up.

FYI, in my experience, most of the B-12 dispensed to cats is 1000 mcg/ml, with a dose of 250 mcg per shot, which is 0.25 ml. However, there are also 3000 mcg/ml and 5000 mcg/ml options available, so worth double checking what you get.

Aren't the poopy pants the worst! I used to feel awful for my little man. With his IBS, I did have to switch to a novel protein more often than the vet originally thought we would need to. Psyllium fiber helped A LOT!

Oddly she’s been very stable with the lamb for years.
Yes it’s the worst 😥
Any tricks you learned?

She gets psyllium husk 1/8 tsp twice a day. Has for many years!

I will confirm the dose from the bottle she ordered.
She showed me the bottle with a syringe and I believe the syringe had ml/cc on it. She showed me the 25 line on that syringe that I will be drawing when it comes in.

I commented how large that needle was!

So I don’t know the concentration of the bottle.
 
25 ml is a HUGE dose. 2500 units. You'd need a 30 ml syringe for that. Double check with the vet.

B12 1000 mcg is typically prescribed for cats.

0.25 ml is a more typical cat dose. You can use a U100 syringe. 1 cc (100 units) is the same as 1 ml. Just measure to the 25 unit line. I used regular 1 ml slip tip syringes with 27 gauge needles. Thicker than insulin syringe needles but not harpoons like for fluids.

I already had a ton of various sized syringes and needles on hand. You can buy slip tip syringes from Amazon and other places. Needles you will most likely need a prescription for to buy anywhere. It's probably easier for you to take one of Ivy's 3/10 cc syringes and measure to the 25 unit line. The needle gauge doesn't matter but, as you know, the thinner the needle, the longer it takes for the stuff to get in.

So is her insulin syringe going to take way too long?

(I have 20 & 21 gauge Terumo for fluids)
But that seems thick too.
27 would be thinner.

You may need a prescription: BD General Use Sterile Hypodermic Needle - 27 Gauge 1/2in Grey | ADW Diabetes

Amazon sells needles too. Search for hypodermic needles.

Or just buy U100 1 cc syringes that are 27 or 28 gauge.

B12 has the consistency of water. Not viscous at all. It shouldn't take long to get 0.25 ml in.

Note: 25 units is almost a full 3/10cc syringe and the plunger will be pulled almost to the end. If you have small hands like me, it's difficult to reach the fingers far enough to push the plunger down. That's why I used the 1 ml syringes and needles to give B12 instead of using Leroy's insulin syringes. For 1 ml of ondansetron, there was absolutely no way I could push the plunger on a full 1 ml syringe. I used 3 ml syringes for that.
