Moonie was just off this morning. She refused her testing churu treat and wouldn’t even really eat freeze dried chicken which is her favorite. By some miracle I got about half a can of LC in her at preshot and gave her the full dose. Since then I’ve struggled to get her to take more than a tsp of LC. She normally has finished her entire can by now.

I gave her a Cerenia injection about 25 minutes ago and will retry feeding her and hopefully getting her meds in her.

I don’t see any lip licking or staying near water, which I think are the biggest markers of nausea. She’s not hiding.

This is just so unlike her. She’s very food motivated.

If the Cerenia injection hasn’t worked (which means I won’t be able to get the ondansetron in her either since she won’t accept it in a churu), should I be taking her to the vet? We just went three weeks ago and had good blood work.

Also, any thoughts on how I should be requesting injectable Cerenia / ondansetron / appetite stimulant? I feel like we need this for our med kit since this is now two days in a short period of time where this has happened.

Should I be asking for prefilled syringes on the Cerenia / ondansetron or vials? I saw on Chewy that the ondansetron vial is for intravenous or intramuscular injection so will we have to learn how to do that vs. the subcutaneous injections we give today? And for an appetite stimulant, should we be asking for transdermal? Essentially, I’m looking for non-oral forms of administration since it’s really hard to get anything into her when she’s refusing food.

I know others in the past have dealt with nausea / poor appetite so any other tips and tricks would be very much appreciated.

I really hope the Cerenia is what does it, but I’m just worried.

Edit: I just saw a bunch of foul smelling soft and liquid poops in the litter box. Is this a pancreatitis flare? I'm now worried it's a pancreatitis / IBD flare-up. I'll look through your previous posts to start stocking up. I wish we had a med kit handy and I'm kind of kicking myself for it.

I have zero knowledge on medication so I hope you can get some answers here soon.

Have you tried a boil shrimp? (Since it’s her fav) to see if she’ll eat that? Do you think it’s possible she’s bored with the flavors? ECID but sometimes Khloe turns her nose up to everything except the exact thing she has in mind.

I hope Moonie starts feeling better soon. Sorry you’re having a rough start to the day Connie 😕

Thanks Sara! She just had diarrhea / soft stools so it might be an IBD / pancreatitis flare up. I’m trying to get the S bouillardi into her but she won’t eat so I’m headed to the store to make homemade baby food and hoping she’ll eat that…

I’m sorry Moonie isn’t feeling herself today, sweet girl I hope whatever is going on goes away soon. Prayers. I wish I could be of some help but I don’t know anything about these medications, but following and I hope someone can jump in soon. I know it’s hard to see them not feeling the best and wishing we could fix it. I hope the day gets easier for both of you and Miss Moons gets her appetite back🍃🍃❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

Uh, I’m so sorry Moonie is going through this and you’re having to deal with it. It’s always so scary when they don’t have an appetite and then you get soft stools. Sounds similar to what Binx went through about a month ago.

I really hope it’s not p-titis or IBD flare up. For Binx, we had him on probiotics and psyllium husk for the diarrhea (not sure how much they really did in the end, and like you said, Moonie would need to ingest them). We did Cerenia as well for a bit and that seemed to him with his nausea/vomiting. And in the end we opted for a diet change, but I think he clearly showed signs of chicken allergy/similar.

Recent good blood work seems good, so maybe treating the symptoms you can and see what improves over the next 24 hours and then 48? I’m not experienced enough for true advice, but that’s what we went through when Binx went through it.

Good luck and sending healing vines 🍃🍃🍃🍃

Thank you everyone! For those of you who have used s bouillardi how did you get your cat to accept it??

Out of desperation I even tried her fishiest gravy MC food and she won’t eat it. I guess it tastes bad. I bought the Jarrow brand - s bouillardi with MOS - not sure if there’s another brand that’s more palatable?

On the flip side she will let me feed her some homemade baby food with pork as long as it’s not tainted with the s bouillardi 😭

Edit - I read the MOS is what makes it taste bitter so I got one without. I know the website that people here recommend (Feline IBD: Start Here!) says to use one with MOS, but I figured something is better than nothing.

I used one without MOS too (what was available to me) and Binx did okay... but he's also generally a decent eater.

Good luck with this new one!!

Thank you! It gets here this evening along with slippery elm powder, colon rescue, smaller capsules, baby food, and feeding syringes 😭

Thank goodness for Amazon prime delivery!

Mister did well on the Jarrow brand at first, but somewhere along the way he decided he hated it even in the most minuscule amounts. Hopefully the one without MOS will go undetected and you can get some in her system because I really did notice a fast improvement when he had diarrhea after just a couple uses. We’re all here rooting for you Moonie girl🙏❤️

The Chewy injectable odansetron can be given subq. That's what Leroy got.

I think I used Dr. Formulas s. boulardii at one point. It made no difference with Leroy's IBD

Mirataz or cypro would help but not much if the Cerenia and odansetron aren't working. Bupe can be helpful for tummy pain. Just ask the vet for what you need and why. Has Moonie depleted her stash of meds already?

Thank you so much! I even bought EZComplete in a panic in case we need to swap to an all raw homemade diet for Moonie. I’d been kind of putting it off but today’s scare just reminded me that if we don’t get her IBD / pancreatitis under control, it makes diabetes regulation that much harder because she won’t eat.

I didn’t know that the injectable odansetron could be given subq so that’s super helpful. Thank you!

Thankfully she still has a good bit left in her stash for the oral meds, and we’ve got maybe 3 more injectable Cerenia syringes. I’ve been on the phone with our vet’s team at Angell all day trying to get more injectable Cerenia and ondansetron for the future (along with an appetite stimulant). It’s just really hard pilling her especially when she doesn’t want any food in her mouth, so we’ve been hoping to get injectable versions. They denied our request because “it stings” so we’re still working through it. I don’t think they understand that as much as I don’t want Moonie in discomfort, her not eating is a giant emergency so some stinging is not a big deal in the grand scheme of things.

I'm so sorry to hear she's not feeling well. Your signature indicates she has pancreatitis--has this been ongoing and chronic for her?

In terms of the Ondansetron, Jude uses the melting pill. He's impossible for me to pill (his head is too big for me to get my hand around it and hold it--even the vet can do it by himself), so we melt the little tablet in a bit of warm water, and I syringe it into his mouth and chase it with a little water or tuna juice. It tastes awful, but the amount is super small, so Jude's over his disgust fairly quickly.

Feel better, Moonie!!! 🍃 🍃 🍃 🍃 🍃 🍃 🍃 🍃 🍃 🍃

I think you mentioned this before Mary! I don’t know why I didn’t think of that in the moment. I tried the buttered up capsule multiple times this morning before giving up. Normally the butter alone would have been enough to get her to tolerate it but it’s just hard when she has no appetite. Thanks for suggesting it! I’ll have to try it later today.

Moonie has had other pancreatitis flare ups before. They were relatively minor and lasted maybe a week of vomiting and soft stools and lower appetite / energy. This is the first time she straight up refused any food though including her favorites.

Just know that not all tablets are the melting type.

Interesting. When she has flares do you take her to the vet to confirm or just treat it with hydration, anti-nausea, pain meds, etc.? Do the IBD flares differ much from the p-itis?

Jude's not had p-itis (KNOCK WOOD and ANTI-JINX), but I occasionally take forays down the research road reading about it because I see others struggling with it on the forum, and I want to learn. One thing I have read is that immediate treatment is key in getting on top of the flare--so you're doing the right things.

FWIW, Jude doesn't often show signs of nausea when he has gone off food--he'll show symptoms when I attempt to syringe feed him occasionally, though (teeth grinding), and then I know.

Do you have a pill shooter? I found that essential to get meds into Neko. I also put Churu into a 3ml syringe and used that as before and after snacks. One thing to be aware of, whatever you assist feed when they are nauseous, may cause some food aversion to that food afterwards. So pick a different flavour than normal if doing the Churu thing. I also put s. boulardii powder into Churu with a bit of water and syringed a bit that way for my IBD kitty.
Also, any thoughts on how I should be requesting injectable Cerenia / ondansetron / appetite stimulant? I feel like we need this for our med kit since this is now two days in a short period of time where this has happened.
Does your vet acknowledge the IBD and or/pancreatitis is something you will be dealing with on an ongoing basis? If so, then they should be OK with you having a med kit for flares, especially in case of holiday or weekends. Pain meds for pancreatitis on spec might be a tough one though.

Honestly I can’t tell the difference - I never know if it’s the IBD or pancreatitis causing it. I haven’t taken her to the vet after the first 1-2 times - I think the treatment is basically nausea, pain management, fluids, and appetite stimulant unfortunately. I wish there was something better. A lot of people here seem to have had luck with the s bouillardi so hopefully Moonie will accept the other version coming tonight…

Thanks Wendy! I think I have a pill shooter from years ago - I’m going to dig around for it. That’s good to know about the food aversion. I imagine it’s negative association - I’ll pick one flavor so that she doesn’t hate all the others.

It’s weird because actually they’ve been surprisingly ok with giving us buprenorphine for pain management for the kitties. I’m not sure why injectable anti-nausea meds are the line. But they didn’t want to give us injectable B-12 at first either so maybe they’re just weird about injectables even though we literally inject her 2x a day with insulin.

Also, you probably saw this but Staci's vet recommended the Animal Biome (fecal microbiota transplantation) for Ivy's diarrhea (assuming it is from the IBD and not p-itis).

Remind them that you are giving it subq, maybe the thought of giving it otherwise has them hung up on it. Which I understand.

I tried the Animal Biome transplant stuff on my IBD kitty. Didn't do a thing. ECID.
Thanks, Wendy! I will.

When my brain is less fried I really need to try to learn more about managing her IBD and pancreatitis. I admit it’s taken a backseat with all the diabetes stuff.

Sorry to just get to you. I was chatting with Staci about Ivy’s diarrhea and then had to take Livia to the vet for her semi-annual checkup.

I give the S. boulardi with MOS because it is better. My cats never acted like the taste bothers them. Can you just mix it with baby food and syringe or she’s not allowing any syringing? You don’t need a lot but usually you want to do emergency stop.

I also use Dr. Tobias’s Prebiotic from Amazon. I use 1/4 cap once a day.

Staci’s vet that Mary is referring to is my vet I referred Staci to 😂. I thought I had the conversation with her but it could have also been in the Raw Feeding for IBD cats FB group that the FMT works best for young cats and not so much older cats. It would be a very last resort for me.

Have you talked to your vet about B12 injections?

Thank you so much Marje!

No worries. I know Staci has been managing so much over the last couple weeks with Ivy. And I hope Livia’s vet visit went well!

I’ll try syringing the s bouillardi. I admit my first priority was to get her to eat today (and didn’t want to stress her too much), because I gave her a full dose of insulin this morning. I got her to eat 1/2 can before her shot so I figured I could get her to eat close to her normal amount, and then panicked when she rejected her +1, +2 and +3 feedings.

I got the prebiotic so thank you!

Is it possible to get injectable B12 from Chewy? My vet claims oral B12 from Nutramax is the same thing and has said he’d give us a prescription for the injectable B12 but the hospital pharmacy always seems to be out of it.

Finally, in the worst case, if she does this again in the pm - should we be cutting her dose in half? I feel pretty confident that I can get some homemade baby food in her, but I’m not sure if I can get her to eat her normal wet food in normal amounts.

Actually, the vet who wanted to do the FMT capsules (this week) was my local vet, not our shared vet.

And they wanted me to do metronizadole, but that's a hard pass. I don't want to totally screw up her microbiome! Nope.
My local vet hasn't come up with too many great answers this past 2 weeks.

Connie, Gerber or Beech Nut meat only baby food has been my savior when Ivy won't eat her regular food. If I have to water it down a little I can syringe it if really necessary.
We need them to eat.

And I know Marje has always syringed the S Boulardii with her kitties with no problems.
I mix it in Ivy's food and she eats it (with her other supplements) as long as she's eating.

Sending many prayers and healing vines to you and sweet Moonie 🍀 🍀 🍀 🍀 🫂 🫂 :bighug: :bighug: 💝 💝 💝

Thank you so much Staci! You’re very kind to respond when you have so much going on with Miss Ivy. I really hope both of our girls are back to their normal selves soon 🍃🍃🍃

I got both Gerber and Beech Nut options today in chicken and turkey so I hope Moonie will permit one of them. She liked my nutritionally incomplete homemade pork baby food but I guess she could smell the MOS in the s bouillardi from a mile away because she would physically turn her head and move to another room. We’ll have to syringe it tonight if that doesn’t work.

That's wild that she can smell he MOS. And I thought Jude had a sensitive nose/palate! Good luck!!

I don’t know about the injectable from Chewy. I’ve never used the Nutramax B12 but it is cyanocobalamin which is what you want but it’s chewable. If she won’t eat, it won’t help her.

It won’t hurt to give her a half dose if you think you can’t get her food in her to work with the insulin. I’d see where she is at PMPS. If she’s really high, you might want to shoot full dose and see if you can get a higher LC in her but maybe not the one she loves in case she vomits.

But…..it’s really ok to shoot a half dose as long as you know the first part of the cycle is going to be the same as if you shoot the full dose because of the depot. You won’t see the effects you want until later in the cycle or tomorrow.

Oh and sorry @Staci & Ivy. You did tell me it was your regular vet on the FMT but then we talked about our shared vet’s thoughts. Duh on me.

Fortunately her appetite improved and we were able to shoot the full dose today.

And she loved the Gerber baby food so I was able to slip the s bouillardi in. I didn’t want to test her patience more so I’m going to try a small spoon next with B12 in 30 mins.

We also finally got a script for the injectable anti-nausea meds and appetite stimulant so we should be in much better shape tomorrow.

Fingers crossed that tomorrow is a better day!

Thank you again for all your help and advice!
