The weekend is here!!! Hope everyone enjoys 😊

For those following along, the saga continues... and boy, what a rollercoaster.

After deciding and failing to pick a good novel protein diet (curse tuna!!), I went back to the pet store after hours in the food charts to try to find a novel protein without seafood and that worked for his FD, CKD, hyperT and sick tummy. IMPOSSIBLE! I kept finding options that were "novel" and then would find mussels or kelp or chicken ingredients. Ugh! Just as I was about to give up and pick the "best" compromise, the vet called me 😲 She had results from Binx's GI panel and spec fPL.

I unprepared for just how bad his results were. Spec fPL was literally off the chart (clip below). And his B12, incredibly low!! I was sad and relieved to know and then livid. 2 appointments with a vet and 1 with an internist and no one thought to pursue these tests... so disappointed. But grateful that I pushed and that we went for the B12 injection right away at the vet. For the p-titis, besides giving him pain meds, I think we're doing everything to treat his symptoms now. She did push me to talk to the internist and get the ultrasound but I just want to make it through the weekend right now... plus, the internist hasn't called me even though she said she would and I've left messages/emails. I feel like she's checked out.

While I had the vet on the phone, I asked about food and what to prioritize and ultimately she said I should look for a vet specialized food and that I'd be hard pressed to find anything without ordering it. Unhelpful! Once again, livid we didn't speak about this earlier and also defeated because I wanted something right for Binx. I'd seen online a brand called Rayne that had novel proteins and a good balance of all his FD/CKD/hyperT needs. I called 3 local vets, to no avail. On my walk home from the pet store, I passed one last vet and popped in on a hail mary attempt. CAN YOU BELIEVE THEY HAD THE EXACT FOOD I WANTED!!!!! *tears* The receptionists were incredibly kind!!! Talked to me about food options, gave me their booklet of data, printed info sheets for me and sympathized hard. I felt lucky.

The food is called Rayne Rabbit - Maint. The website specifically says it's good for p-titis (patient dependent) and has low-ish phos, exclusively rabbit/no seafood, and while higher on the carbs (medium carb) I'm less concerned about that because I can compensate with insulin. And it's wet food!

Started transitioning Binx to that yesterday and he's loving it. And I wonder if his tummy is too because... pastey poop last night!!!! Even some formed bits. Of course, this could be any one of the things we're doing right now, but I'm just accepting the win.

Sincere apologies for the novel, but the drama!

Safe surfing and thanks everyone for your support 💕🫂

Neko was on a raw diet. Some manufactured, some home made. Her IM vet (trained in Europe) called it the best food for her. The entire clinic where she got acupuncture were also fans of raw. GP vet not so much. EVID - every vet is different. There are some good options available in Canada. I used Red Dog/Blue Kat most often as the manufactured one. It is made close to where I live. I toured the plant. I knew a couple where she did the product sourcing and he did the cleaning. There are quite a few other good options too. In Canada, one of the available premixes is TC Feline - they have a Special version good for CKD. You order on line. Their site used to have recipes on line, not sure it it still does. Catinfo.org also has a section on making your own food with the ingredients you need in place of a premix. For sourcing meat, I have an organic exotic meats butcher near me, plus a local raw pet food store that sold plain meat as well as manufactured. That's where I got elk. Tip on raw, try cheaper meats first, or they'll develop a taste for the most expensive one.

Freeze dried raw (add water) is a commercially available option too. Possibly an easier way to try different proteins. Ask the pet store if they have any sample packs. That way you can try with the fuss, to see if he'll eat it. Neko converted right away when I gave it to her. Second kitty needed a 2 week conversion.

With bird flu going around, I'd avoid raw bird meat for now. But you can find lamb, rabbit, bison, venison, goat, pork etc. All of those in canned versions too, check out Identity. Rawz has some of them, as does Canada Fresh.
Thanks, Wendy 😻 Incredible info on the raw diet!! So true that EVID and amazing you found support. And can't believe you got to tour the plant and were connected to those that were part of the chain. Also, so cool you had a local organic EXOTIC meats butcher! So many interesting things.

Glad that Canada has some good options. There's some local pet stores I'm going to check in with and see about online orders as well. I did also read that if there's concerns with bacteria, I guess you could cook it before providing but then at that point, I might as well source and cook myself perhaps.

What great news!! On all fronts--super thankful you were able to find the exact food you were looking for. And yay for pastey poops--poop-poop hooray💩!! Do you think he'll still need to stick with the novel diet, even though you're pretty well assured that the tummy/poop issue is the p-itis (at least I think that's what you're suggesting)? And p-itis! Man--that ish is BAD. I hope he's going to start feeling better soon. Good job being his faithful advocate, Briana. I'm so, so sorry that you have had to be the detective and ask questions that a specialist should!

Wishing you and yours a wonderful, relaxing, healing weekend!

Rayne has been mentioned on FDMB before. I think @Allie & Gen was feeding it. Her vet said that Rayne is like guaranteed to be free of other potential allergens because of the way it is made, something a company like Koha or Rawz can't guarantee. Rayne has a kangaroo variety if Binx isn't too picky about protein.

It's definitely frustrating to find a food a cat with food allergies / sensitivities and / or IBD and / or diabetes and / or kidney issues can eat :arghh: Leroy can't eat mussels or random other fillers that most novel protein foods seem to have. We're on Koha LID and Canada Fresh for canned food now. Main meals are frozen raw.

Leroy's fPLI has been way off the charts before 🤗 His recent result was 26🫣

Yes, poop-poop hooray! Thanks Mary 😄 I do think maybe Binx may also have some kind of allergy (in addition to the p-titis), even if just to chicken. So I think I'll leave him on the novel diet for now until his weight goes up a bit (assuming he keeps improving) and then once he's stable, I might try some alternatives.

Ouuu, very interesting. Thanks Squeem! :) Always reassures me when anyone on FDMB has experience with something... I trust this community more than anything.

Truly so difficult with the cocktail of conditions, which I know you're familiar with too! So many things counteracting the other... you want low phos but have hyperT? Too bad because seafood brings phos down but iodine up. Bleh!! And yea, why do all these novel proteins have these mussel/kelp fillers!!

I hope his fPL goes down :( I was spooked to see Binx off the chart, so helpful again to know someone else has experienced it 😮‍💨🤗

yayy for some wins ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 sorry to hear about the tests.. (we got some stuff going on too so not sure if resolved.. tried reading best. ✨..)
Yay indeed! Thanks, Yasmin🤗 You really are going through a lot and you're doing amazing! Even having time to stop by to check on Binx is incredible, we appreciate it.

Hugs and scratches to Pudge😊

Hi Briana, great work with your detective hat and for pressing to find answers for sweet Binx.
Very glad to hear poops are a little. We take every win here 🙏

That was incredible you found a Hail Mary vet to help with the food yesterday! 🎊👍💓

I’m sorry to hear the nasty p-titis level is so high. I’m so glad you have the meds and tools to help him.
They gave Ivy fluids twice that week we dealt with it and I ordered supplies to have when needed.

We are sending lots of love and vines for him to feel much better. And strength for you, it’s a long slog to hang on while nursing him through this.
You’re truly doing amazing. Hugs and vines to you both 🫂🙏🐈‍⬛🐾💞💓🍀🍃🍀🍃🍃💞🍀🍃🍀🍃🍀🍃

Aww sorry to hear about the lab results but yay for knowledge, food found, and better poops!

Xander's last specfpl was 30 so he is also a part of that club. I'm not sure if it ever went down based on how long this stretch of more difficult eating has lasted.
Our FD babies go through so much! All we want is what's best for them.

I hope Xander's number has come down, even a little. I know you do so much to make sure he's eating and is healthy. Sorry that it's been difficult 🫂

Thanks so much, Staci 💕🍃🫂

It felt like an incredible sign that things would turn around after finding the food at that vet. Holding onto that feeling as long as I can, and as long as Binx shows me he's feeling okay. He's a resilient boy!

Low B12 and pancreatitis are common companions for GI issues (IBD and/or small cell lymphoma), unfortunately. I presume you've seen A Primer on Pancreatitis. He will feel much better with his B12 supplemented. You should be able to get a small vial from the vet and do the injections yourself.

The diabetic list here, contains foods that are CKD and FD compatible. Some of which may be novel proteins. Rabbit is a higher phosphorus meat, as is kangaroo. I hope the Rayne works out, just mentioning that there might be alternatives, should you need them.

Oh, and one more note about raw. You can definitely pan fry it, just make sure the mixture does not have ground bone it it. You do not want to serve cooked bone. Some raw is made with bone powder (often buffalo for some reason) or eggshell calcium, and those are OK to cook. The eggshell calcium is lower phosphorus.
