Happy Friday!

Binx didn't have a great night. He had a SLIGHTLY firmer than liquid poop during the day (much later than he's been having too), which naturally had me excited, but then had 2 liquid diarrhea's during the night and I'm back to being devastated.

Today's mission, start transitioning to a novel protein. Weruva has a 100% lamb option (Lamb Burgini) and while it sits on the high end of low carb (7-10%) and is "good" for low pho (about 220-240/100 kcal), I can pick it up immediately at the store and I don't want to wait for any shipping right now.

Safe surfing and healing vines for everyone (no matter if they're needed) πŸ€— πŸƒ

Sending more vines to Binx πŸƒπŸƒπŸƒπŸƒπŸƒ sorry to hear that he had a rough night.

Good luck with the new food, I hope he likes it and that it helps with his symptoms, hope that switching to the generic Felimazole also helps.

Big hugs to you, Briana πŸ€—, it gets heavy when there are multiple issues to try to manage at the same time and all we want to do is make the right decision for them. So glad you advocated for him and went back in to get some more answers. Hope the blood work provides some insight and helps get him on the path to feeling better soon. ❀️

Neko loved Lamburgini even at her sickest, but read the ingredients. It has tuna in it.

Carrying on yesterday's conversation in today's post:
Do you mind me asking how long from onset of symptoms to treatment to seeing improvements it was for any IBD/SCL kitty you've had? I know ECID but I'm really struggling with how much weight Binx has lost in such a short period of time and I feel like everything takes too long to become effective and he may just wither away in the process, plus he'll be uncomfortable with all the new meds/foods I throw at him
Weight loss in a short period of time is typically from diabetes, hyperthyroidism, or small cell. I presume his hyperT has been tested since treatment and he's doing well with that like his sugars. The goal with SCL treatment is first to slow, then stop the weight loss, then move to weight gain. I had 3 cats in a row with SCL. :arghh:. First kitty, it was a matter of days on prednisolone before he stopped vomiting. He did go into SCL remission and passed from pancreatic cancer. 😒Second to get it was Neko, and she was "complicated". She had CKD and got diagnosed with heart issues the same time as SCL. Appetite was a problem. I discovered too late the antinausea drugs dose was way too little. It took maybe a couple weeks before her vomit/bile situation got better. Kitty#3 was more complicated because SCL came in a combo pack with IBD. Having said that, she also got prednisolone and the vomits reduced to a lot less in a few weeks. Even after remission from SCL she stayed on pred for her IBD. She also went into SCL remission within a year and got taken from me by a completely unrelated cancer, almost 8 years after the SCL diagnosis.

Sending lots of healing vines to Binx, I hope this new food helps! That sounds great and even better you can go pick it up.πŸƒπŸƒπŸƒβ€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

Poor Binx! I hope his tummy starts to feel better soon! πŸ’œ
Thank you all πŸ«‚ πŸ–€ πŸƒ It's a fine balancing act we all have to manage

Uh!! Thanks for flagging, that snuck past me :banghead: Not novel and not good for hyperT!

I'm sorry that you've gone through this so many times, with different kitties. They're so lucky to have you - as am I and everyone here! Thank you for sharing your stories, I'm sure they're difficult to revisit πŸ«‚
The FD certainly makes it more complicated knowing the steroid issue.

Update (while Binx sleeps on my lap):

Went to grab the new food, which I now know is not the right option. Argh! But thanks, Wendy! Tuna included, which is not novel and fish is not great for hyperT kitties. Back to the drawing board.

Regardless, I had a wonderful chat with the pet store staff, who told me about her dog that had had IBD years ago. She recounted very similar symptoms, diarrhea, weight loss (to the point people thought she was starving her dog) and trying all the novel proteins. Eventually, she said a raw diet helped resolve the symptoms, so I will do some research on that. She was kind and gave me information on the raw foods they had available.

I'm pretty sure vets/vet community aren't big fans of raw and I've heard concerns with bacteria... but I also know it works for so many (and others here too) so I want to learn more about this option.

Hi Briana,

I'm sorry Binx's stools are still runny

I'm so glad Wendy mentioned the fish in Lamburghini. I use that for a bit higher LC and just gave some to Jude last night when he dropped into the 50s. I've suspected he has a fish allergy so have been trying to eliminate that from his diet--I didn't realize it was in the Lamburghini. I guess I'll get to see if my suspicions are correct with his next b.m.

Since there are concerns about bacteria, etc., in raw food, have you considered a homemade cooked diet, like what @Staci & Ivy feeds Ivy. I've looked into these because I think, overall, it would be cheaper and healthier for my five. But I can't seem to get over my inertia and actually decide on a recipe and do it 😫

Feel better, Binxie! Good luck on the novel protein search, Briana.

Thanks, Mary πŸ€— I hope Jude has a nice and well formed b.m. when it comes - we don't like upset stomachs here!! But yea, I can't believe they snuck that in there! The webpage does mention it, but usually if it's a combo, it says on the can. Argh!

The homemade diet has crossed my mind, but I think there are too many variables right now that my brain my explode trying to add that to the list. Perhaps if I'm able to settle his stomach, it's something I'd look at.

You’re so dedicated to solving the issues, Briana πŸ«‚
I do cook a lamb and sweet potato diet for Ivy which she likes. It’s a lot of work but I do feel it’s very beneficial for her overall health.

I hope you can find something that will work well for Binx πŸ’žπŸΎπŸˆβ€β¬›

Neko was on a raw diet. Some manufactured, some home made. Her IM vet (trained in Europe) called it the best food for her. The entire clinic where she got acupuncture were also fans of raw. GP vet not so much. EVID - every vet is different. There are some good options available in Canada. I used Red Dog/Blue Kat most often as the manufactured one. It is made close to where I live. I toured the plant. I knew a couple where she did the product sourcing and he did the cleaning. There are quite a few other good options too. In Canada, one of the available premixes is TC Feline - they have a Special version good for CKD. You order on line. Their site used to have recipes on line, not sure it it still does. Catinfo.org also has a section on making your own food with the ingredients you need in place of a premix. For sourcing meat, I have an organic exotic meats butcher near me, plus a local raw pet food store that sold plain meat as well as manufactured. That's where I got elk. Tip on raw, try cheaper meats first, or they'll develop a taste for the most expensive one.

Freeze dried raw (add water) is a commercially available option too. Possibly an easier way to try different proteins. Ask the pet store if they have any sample packs. That way you can try with the fuss, to see if he'll eat it. Neko converted right away when I gave it to her. Second kitty needed a 2 week conversion.

With bird flu going around, I'd avoid raw bird meat for now. But you can find lamb, rabbit, bison, venison, goat, pork etc. All of those in canned versions too, check out Identity. Rawz has some of them, as does Canada Fresh.

Thanks, Ivy! πŸ«‚ Good to know the diet combo you cook!
And speaking of dedicated, you're cooking is just one piece of proof of that! Ivy is lucky to have you 😊
