Dosing advice continued

That is a very good response and he does not seem to be dropping rapidly in the blue. Did he have small meals at +2 and +4?

I would have also given a little more food at +3 since he dropped a little over 100 points in an hour and that’s a little faster than I would like to see.

Just some boiled chicken
It’s very important for him to get those snacks regularly. Probably the boiled chicken is too low in carbs for this early portion of the cycle and should be saved for snacks later in the cycle. I think he would have done better if he had eaten something around 6 percent carbs or so.

I’m such a newbie to this. Can you tell me what +2 and +4 mean. I’m trying to learn. I so appreciate all of you. You have already helped me so much and lessened my stress
I see you just joined on Friday. I don’t think anyone tagged me on your intro post. Can you make a post here on the ProZinc forum so I can help you? I will read your intro post as well. I am assuming your cat is on ProZinc since you are reading threads over here. I would love to help.

Just gave him half a can of his fancy feast. When should I test again?
Okay. The snacks don’t have to be as large as a half a can. It depends on how you are doing it. If you choose to split up his daily food allotment into the breakfast. +2 snack, +4 snack, dinner and also the evening snacks then you can do it that way. Otherwise, just a few teaspoons or a tablespoon of his food will be enough to help smooth the cycle and prevent steep drops in BG.

It’s 131 at +5
Excellent. I would wait a couple of hours. He’s probably going to go up from here. But at least he’s in a stable place now.

So going forward, I would suggest feeding a small amount of FF at +2 and +4. Give boiled chicken at +6 which should be at or a little after nadir and should not cause his BG to rise due to food. Boiled chicken would be a good testing treat too!

Also, I would recommend doing dose increases in the morning instead of at night— so you can monitor better what will happen with the increase.

Was wondering if I should stay at 1.75 units I haven’t been testing as much as before and have missed 1 or 2 shots but his numbers don’t seem to bad in the am..
@Suzanne & Darcy

Do not increase the dose. You already get green nadirs so you don’t have room to increase without risking a hypo.

He’s actually earned a reduction down to 1.5 units if you were following the SLGS dosing method. To me, he seems pretty stable on this dose — although you should be aware that many cats to drop lower at night and we don’t know if he is one of those since there are few nighttime tests. I would feel more comfortable if we had an idea of his nighttime nadirs.

If you feel comfortable with this dose of 1.75 and you want to keep the dose there, please change your signature to say “Custom Dosing Do Not Copy”. We ask people to do this because it can confuse other members who may look at your spreadsheet.

Okay thank you. And yes I think I would like to keep him on 1.75 . And will try to get some pm testing done..
Thank you

Be sure to keep getting tests regularly because a cat’s insulin requirements can change over time and they can surprise you.

Thanks. I am very pleased to see his progress. Please don’t forget to put custom dosing on your signature.

I hope he’s feeling really well now and happy!
