This guy!! He's really itching to come down... I thought we might see a decrease soon, but wasn't expecting that 38 he threw me last night... so decrease we have. Lots of MC to keep me from staying up all night, so Binx is higher this morning.

In other news, I realized the hyperthyroid pills are coated in what seems to be something sugary so I called the vet today to confirm what exactly it is and how I should proceed - TBD. I've been to the vet too many times in the last month, so I hope the pills are okay and I don't have to go back. @Staci & Ivy did you see any spike in Ivy's BG after the pills? Her SS shows a decrease and hold of 1.75F (+/-), so maybe I'm panicking for nothing?

Anyways, Friday can't come soon enough. Hope all see a safe surf today 🤗

Hi Briana, no I don’t notice a spike of BG with giving the med.
I buy it from Chewy and it says the only ingredient is methimazole, (which is the same thing (generic) as the brand name which is Tapazole)

https://www.chewy.com/methimazole-generic-tablets-cats/dp/173628

Ivy‘s glucose has been up and down since I’ve been giving her this medication in pill form since right around November 1, 2025

I would certainly hope that the pills you are using are not coated in any kind of sugar.
Sorry for the additional worry you’re going through, not what you need right now and I hope you get an answer quickly

Steady surfing please Binx, your mom needs a gentle break this week 🏄‍♂️🌊🥰💗💓💕 hello

Thanks, Staci 🤗 🤗 As always, so helpful!! I don't know where we'd be without you right now.

This definitely makes me suspicious of the pills I got for Binx. The Chewy ones look different and the customer photos look like they can be split and the vet had advised me not to split these (because of the coating, besides that the dose is small). Putting a picture of what I got below, it almost looks like Tylenol and I know that coating is definitely sugary... versus the white ones from your link.

The person I initially spoke to at the vet (front desk) said they're coated but not sure what with and "shouldn't the benefits of the pill outweigh the possible side effects for the diabetes"... and truly, I'm tired of hearing that specific line :banghead:

That line is so unhelpful, ugh. I mean, the benefits might outweigh the potential side effects, I suppose, but they should at least try to figure out exactly what you're giving your cat! You can't just ignore the diabetes altogether!

Best of luck with the vet and with the reduction. You really do deserve a bit of a break, and I really hope you get it. 💕

Thanks, Allie 🫂 Truly unhelpful line!! It's crazy too because there are other ways to treat the hyperthyroid at this point that could avoid sugar coated tablets, like a transdermal option. Wouldn't we try the option whatever works best for both first? Ah!!

It's really frustrating that you have to be the one to flag this; maybe this format is the one that has been easiest or most helpful for other cats and the vet just has it as a go-to, but for pete's sake, Binx has multimodal health concerns and that should always be a consideration. It'd be one thing if the vet forgot/didn't realize about the sugar coating, but they should be ready to jump in and adjust when you point it out, or at the very least, suggest you trial them for a few days to see if there's a notably negative effect on Binx's BG and be open to switching if so. Argh.

Can you be our vet? 😭😂 I don't mean to joke, but damn what an incredible response! If only it came from my vet...

** Also, when I quickly Google, the first line I get is: Felimazole (methimazole) for cats is manufactured as a sugar-coated tablet :blackeye:
That’s so insane!!
I don’t even know how to respond to this situation 😡

The Methimazole I’m using are white and don’t appear to have any coating.

Maybe do a post on the Facebook group and ask the question there as there would be many eyes on the situation??

Mine were white too, and Luna and Zoey's dosing was always quarters and halves of pills, so they had to be cut all the time. Those red ones are so weird! Why would they give you those when there's perfectly good ones with no coating?!
