HELP! Newly diagnosed BG 124 at 12 hr mark

Just checked BG at the 12 hour mark, time for insulin but the BG is 124. Do we skip it? She’s eating a can of FF Beef and Liver food now.

She was starving about 2 hours ago so I caved and gave her a small Sheba chicken can then too. She should be eating around 300 calories/day and has been getting under 200 this past week with her injury. Today is the first day she’s wanted normal food levels.

Hello there. No mid cycle tests today? That would have given you a heads up about where she was headed. And we have no idea what her nadir was today. That would have been good to know.

I am really happy to hear she’s been wanting to eat more normally today!

As for tonight, since we have almost no data on her blood glucose, I think it was okay to skip the shot for tonight. Our goal should be to gather as much data on how her cycles go so that we will be able to make wise dose decisions and to shoot lower numbers gradually.

Yes. It’s important in the beginning to keep food away during the two hour prior to the preshot test, but it’s understandable that you wanted to feed her. She hasn’t been eating enough and it’s important that she eat.

So when you get a lower than expected preshot number, the procedure is to stall without feeding. Stall breakfast/dinner for about 30 minutes and re test to see if BG is stable or rising on its own. Remember that the BG will rise for about two hours before the current shot of ProZinc onsets.

No, unfortunately not. I’ve been exhausted after this week with her abscess, and needed sleep today. It’s so overwhelming at first.

I called the local Animal ER too and explained the situation. They also said to skip the dose unless I can retest and do it later. That, unfortunately would mess the schedule up too much with my work schedule. Now I’m thinking she may have been low when I fed the Sheba; she acted like she was starving; and after she ate, fine. Then she ate a full FF can two hours later at meal time. Now thinking I need to do a full FF for meal, then Sheba snack; and repeat at meal to her her to over 250 - 300 calories.

Possibly— but “low” doesn’t mean dangerously low. Oftentimes if BG drops it will trigger hunger.

It is in the beginning! No harm done skipping for tonight unless she is producing ketones. Are you testing for ketones?

She needs a good main meal and snacks at +2 and +4. If she’s starving then a snack at +6 will be okay if it’s lowest carb.

Thank you so much Suzanne. I’m glad to hear low doesn’t mean dangerously low always. I should’ve tried testing her but she was adamant she was finding food. We’ve kept her locked in a bedroom while her abscess heals to keep her away from Little Kitty & she marched right down the hallway where her dry food bowl used to sit.

I have the ketone strips but haven’t tested yet. She’s being sneaky and peeing at 3 am or when I’m not near her.

That’s a good plan; and when nobody will be home for 2-3 hours, we’ll probably give a little snack of FF or Sheba then too (spoon full or so); just to not have another today. We have to leave her for a few hours Monday and Tuesday and I’m already anxious. I know it’ll get easier though; especially with people like you helping along the way. You have no idea how truly grateful I am.

Bless her heart! She wanted her food. Not only has she had an injury with an infection but she’s had a diet change as well…. and where she expects to find her kibble… it’s no longer there!
