Day 4 post surgery
So his appetites was better last night but this morning I could barely get him to eat anything. He had one or two bites so I still gave him his insulin especially because he is running so high. I hope that was the right thing to do. I'm going to call the vet later today to see about additional pain meds and an appetite stimulant. Mostly everywhere is closed this morning due to all of the snow and ice.

I think the steps you've taken make sense. I hope your vet's open - mine definitely is not (though our emergency vet place is).

In the absence of meds, there are a bunch of suggestions here that might be worth a try? Some things you might have around your house already. None of them worked for Gen last Wednesday night when he wouldn't eat at all, unfortunately, but you never know: Suggestions on How to Stimulate Kitty's Appetite

I hope Kai eats better for you, Maddie. It's so stressful when they don't want to eat.
Can you syringe feed him if needed (do you have syringes?)
I'm glad Allie posted the helpful info on helping them to eat.

Sending lots of good wishes for good eating, come on Kai! 🍀 🍀 🍀 🍀 🍀

Thank you for the support and well wishes ❤️ Unfortunately I didn't get to speak with his vet today because they decided to stay closed due to all the ice.

Kai actually ate pretty well tonight - probably the best he has in the past day. I switched things up and gave him a plain can of 0% Tiki Cat (quail egg), no supplements mixed in. At this point, the carefully planned feeding schedule can take a back seat - as long as he eats and I can give him his insulin, I’m happy.

I tried his 20% carb Fancy Feast this morning and he wanted nothing to do with it, which immediately set off all my internal alarm bells. That said… I may have lightly intimidated him into eating tonight. I told him I was prepared to syringe-feed him, then showed him the syringe 😆 Shockingly effective.

Now I just need his BG numbers to come down, which may take some time if pain, stress, or all of the above are influencing them. Hopefully I can talk to his surgical doctor tomorrow.

I'm glad the threat worked! 🍀 I can just picture his little face staring at the syringe and back at the food. 😳

Hope you talk to the doc tomorrow, my first thought was pain or nausea. :bighug: 🐈‍⬛:bighug:

Oh, Maddie! I HATE it when they don't eat or at least not properly, anyway. I hope the two of you can get past this bump in the road, that he can get his regular appetite back, and that you can get those numbers down again. 🌿 🌿 🌿 🌿

After one of Neko's surgeries, her numbers shot up too. It was a dental but also a shock to the system. The inflammation can raise the numbers. And it can last 7-14 days. In Neko's case, I increased the insulin dose to get her over the hump, then decreased when the inflammation came down and she told me it was now too much insulin. If you leave him in higher numbers for too long, you do have to worry about glucose toxicity.

Yep - glucose toxicity is exactly what I’m worried about, along with the possibility of ketones, even though he doesn’t have a history of them. At this point, though, it feels like anything is possible. But you are right, someone also told me today that it could take up to 2 weeks for him to go back to normal 😰

Of course, he decided to give me a wild ride tonight and dropped to 75 at +4. Maybe my threat worked a little too well. Jesus have mercy on this poor cat - 423 to 75 in four hours. Granted, the human meter might’ve exaggerated that 423 and he may have actually been closer to 300, but still… that’s a massive drop.

So I’m equal parts relieved to see that green number and absolutely dreading tomorrow morning’s AMPS. That 75 came after I fed him at +1, +2, and +3. I didn’t test at any of those times because I figured he was still running high and honestly, I was so excited and distracted that he was finally eating regularly at his normal snack hours, I didn't want to spook him from his food. If I’d tested and realized how fast he was dropping, I definitely would’ve fed higher carbs  I guess his sudden appetite improvement should’ve tipped me off that his BG was dropping. Hindsight, right? :banghead:
