This is how I administer sub-q fluids. You can draw, and give, exactly the right amount, and the butterfly is much more gentle than a huge harpoon needle.

Cerenia and Zofran would be what you'd want. Each does something different to counter nausea and lack of appetite.

Mirtaz is to stimulate appetite, but if your cat has nausea, imagine for a minute how feeling nauseous and hungry would feel.
I would not give a cat an appetite stimulant until they have nausea under control. For the sake of being humane.

hm!!!!! does sound awful… how to approach these possibilities?.. like.. nausea first.. appetite later/after IF needed?..

I, on the other hand have tried for months to get Mirataz/Mirtazapine to get my boy to eat while it doesn’t work and he loses pounds. We now have tried Elura (Entyce) at a LOW dose and finally he is EATING! Every cat is different and the key with these appetite stimulants is to start SMALL and titrate up gradually only if necessary. Mirataz has caused a lot of bad reactions in cats, too (usually due to overdosing.)

awwww thats good to hear.. whatever works is whatever works.. eeek. i think im going to do my best not to use it if can help that.. :/ do best to just address any nausea/food coming back.. etc yikes. ideally addressing that helps the appetite..

I agree that it is a horrible idea to give any appetite stimulant to a cat without first treating the nausea that is causing them to not eat in the first place. Imagine feeling like you want to vomit when you even smell food and yet at the same time you feel hungry. This can create food aversions where the cat will remember this feeling and not want to ever eat that kind/flavor of food again.

Yes. But many times you have to run fluid out of the line to remove any air bubbles in the line. So you may not always be starting from the line.

oh dear!! suzanne noo.. i see a number of bubbles in the line.. also, am i supposed to put a new line every time?! or just with a new bag?.. i swear im also going to watch every video i can when i get the chance.. that fluid btw runs right out the line when pushed all the way up!! got it everywhere..

You absolutely did the right thing giving the Cerenia if he has been vomiting! It should be dosed at 1 mg per pound of body weight. It tastes AWFUL and you should order some size 4 empty gelatin capsules from Amazon and put the Cerenia into the gelatin capsule so he will never taste that awful bitter taste.

yeah.. he had this morning.. tried eating, came back .. glad to hear. and dose siunds right phew ty for saying!! i was hoping they did it right.. thats great to know!! from our Amlodipine days.. this time i just took this one too and used his freeze dried treats, break up some pieces, put the pill in the middle, add them around, wet it.. make a little pill pocket and went ok today, he got it.

If you do get Ondansetron, ask for the 4 mg. Orally dissolving tablets (also known as mini-melts) They’re pretty small and dissolve quickly. Do you have a pill shooter?

ty!!! most certainly will.. pill shooter?? Haha will have to look up.. he hard to pill.. but will just make one of my homemade pill pockets.. get it in if he cant/not up to doing.. somehow. will look into pill shooter.

Nugget is eating…. had a little dinner.. gonna get him another snack rn. ate his treats. .. got his fluids.. i thank everyone so so SO much.. ugh.

fluids a success sorta yayy tysmmmmm to our community here.. got in about.. 50 mL or so id say.. tried more but again am nervous.. also called where his tool Internist is, someone finally talked to me.. (called to get all the advice on the fluids.. he said he didnt prescribe so he wont help.. i hate him )

omgggg he let out a little scream tho….. a piece of my soul broke. these damn things hurt!! how can we do this to him another week?….. terumos forecasted to arrive on 22nd….

And thing is, too, i gotta pick somewhere else to do it.. did it in his spot on the bed.. and i dont want him associating it w this.. hm.

You know what…. Overnight I have been thinking about you and Pudge and this occurred to me….And I am surprised your vet didn’t realize/remember this before prescribing Elura/Entyce as an appetite stimulant (and I would ask for a refund) — it can raise BG. I was helping a Pro Zinc user and her cat was prescribed Elura and it did raise BG. Even the front of the box says “ use in cats with current or historical. Diabetes mellitus has not been evaluated and use may not be appropriate.” Now every cat is different, but I would proceed with caution, ask the vet again and switch to Mirataz (that I have used in my CKD cats over the years.)

Every cat is different though.

The fluids will really help him feel better. Make sure he’s pooping regularly. Constipation can really be a problem for CKD cats and you want to stay on top of it.

so appreciate you thinking of us!!!! .. well since i always heard on here about Mirataz, it also happened to be the one the ER vet for fortunately suggested, so will definitely go w it!!

oh suzanne i also gave him the fluids today.. was ordered 120 mL.. and he growled and hid in the covers.. put his little head in the pillows.. and im scared he might have gotten a bit more then shoulda but maybe not that much cuz my setup is just me, eying the bag and the needle.. did i hurt him??? they offered to do it today/show me more and my brain fog brain said no….. regretted it later for sure.
