Oof I slept till 11am! guess I needed it.

Pip is having a straight yellow cycle for now.

Back to school tomorrow... gonna go pick up a bunch of mc and hc today cause I depleated my hypo kit.

My lil deaf boy is doing well and napping away :)

I just checked my finances and my credit card... this is freaking hard

I have to go get test stips and more food today, I am a student on government help to go back to school... the field I am studying in has high placement, I am good at what I am learning... I have a year left.

I must remind myself that this is a passing phase but it's hitting hard today.
I was reading about fundraising but like... Pip is fine, he doesnt need a big operation or anything... it's just hard to provide the best care and I feel overwhelmed right now.

I will stop buying the DM, and switch to just fancy feast for now, and fancy feast gravy for MC and LC.

Just a little anxiety moment and I needed to share with people who get it.

Big hugs everyone and kitties 💕

Sarah, I completely get it! FD is an expensive disease to treat!! And you want to do the best for your little guy, so it's stressful. There is an organization that helps called DCIN (diabetic cats in need). I'm not sure how they work, but I believe Maria (@CORKY) does and might even be able to pass along the contact information.

For financial assistance that will help you with insulin, strips, and other supplies and partial medical bills, I use DCIN, they have been help me since Corky was diagnosed on Jan 2023, and he has not ever had surgery or any other illness besides diabetes, they are great and if you qualify they approve you right away or here is the financial assistance links
Financial Help Links

You have so much sympathy from me on the financial stress! I'm in a different position, but it's a very difficult one, and the costs associated with Gen's care have threatened to be overwhelming at times. I still need to check out the Financial Help Links shared above. In the meantime, solidarity and hugs. ❤️

(Cost is one reason I'm not trying to find lower-phosphorus alternatives for Fancy Feast just yet, even though that's something I know I'll want to do eventually. I need to save some money somewhere, somehow.)

If I did you Can, I’m on the most strict budget, alone with no support, I was told to put Corky down, but DCIN, gave me hope they supply Corky’s ProZinc year round strips and have paid for vet bills, you can do this! Just take a step back, breath in breath out, cats are very sensitive to stress you stress they stress, besides you found this Forum. Since I did and Corky being so healthy besides diabetes, Corky has not stepped PAW IN A VETS OFFICE, going on 4 years, this Forum saved his life, help me with dosing, any concern I may have, you can see his spreadsheets, he is one of the most regulated cat in this forum, It can happen to yours as well I trust this Forum and the amazing members here blindly!😉

For food, Chewy.com has the best prices fr Fancy Feast, they do sell by the case of 24 cans, but the price per can is about $0.83 a can compared to supermarkets, and if you get on the Auto-Ship you get a $5.00 discount per case, you can change the date, the order, I have Corky and Coco, I buy 4 cases, 4 different flavors once a month, I feed 1/2can in each meal, that's 4 meals a day, and they are very satisfied both cats are big big cats, Coc is 1/2 Main Coon, I make sure to buy foods that are between 0-10% carbs, I feed up to 4%, you can go to Corky's SS and scroll to the left and see Remarks and get an idea of the schedule, what I feed and how much, you do not have to go by that, is just an idea, also Friskies have low carbs and at good price

Aaand its back to 58... this time at +1.75.

Gave him 2 little spoons of MC and will test in 30.

Up at 6am for school tomorrow so wish us luck.
Come on Pip we don't need to be this dramatic I'm so very proud of you for processing that insulin like a champ, but maybe just a bit less steep in the drops and bounces would keep mamma from having a heart attack lol

Pip is up to 67 30 minutes after 2 spoonfuls of MC (fancy feast grilled tuna in gravy) at +2.5.

Should I give him a bit more or should I wait and test in another 30?

Since we are so early in his cycle I'm preparing to just stay up till 1 anyway.

Thank you all for the help!

67 is good, test in another 1/2 hour, don’t give any more MC or syrups, if it’s lower than 60 feed 1-2 tsp of MC test again, Pip should be ok till AMPS, Corky uses ProZinc And his last meal is at 10:00 PM if you see his SS you can see that he we go to sleep after that, with usually 69-70’s let us know his next BG, I’m right here

Good feed 2 tsp of MC Test in 1/2 hour if it has not raised the BG, do you have some high carbs ( gravies? Feed 1 tsp of gravy stay off Karo or Syrup until next test, I’m here with you remember that syrup or honey is only a quick fix if lower than 50, you do not want to over carb tge system, and have bouncing the next day

Take a step back breath in and breath out, cats are very sensitive to stress you stress they stress, Pip is ok,,you need to be ok for him, I’ll be here till you are both ok!😉

Here is the HC i picked up

It has rice and wheat and even corn syrup in it!

And for MC its grilled tuna feast in gravy which is 13% on the food chart.

he only had 1 lime ever and it was a 49.

Pip seems to like extreme surfing of the 50s wave... silly boy!
It’s good number, and the pancreas heal faster, but is good for you to learn to surf these low numbers, it took me 2 years, now I shoot on 80s BGs without blinking an eye, at first if Corky esas 150 1 hour before AMPS/PMPS I would pull my hair, run around like a chicken without a head, bombard this forum till my finger tips would hurt, and now all I see is low greens, and if he has more than 130 (blues) during the cycle I began to worry, but this is a process, just as long as you do not miss a shot of ProZinc, and there are exceptions, you post us and we will walk you thru it!

As long as he does not get to 50 or lower he’s ok! If he does rub some honey or syrup on his gums, no a lot, this will be a quick fix only until one of the members I tag plug in on this post, but I’m still here

You might need dose adjustment, and I cannot do that, I do not give dosing advice, but the members I tagged can

That’s what we are here for!! I’ve been in your shoes, giving back is what’s all about, My phone is besides me even when I’m sleeping, please post if you need us! Rest, you need it, if you feel comfortable, you can give one last tsp of MC before going to sleep, you will probably see some bouncing tomorrow, but is ok ( high, low BG numbers) have a good night , you pulled thru it!! You’ll be a pro in no time! Now you know what to do! But we are still here to walk you thru it if need to😉🥰❤️

Wow, you've had some excitement today!

I don't think it would hurt to give it one more hour/test before you turn in - you know I'm a big champion of sleep and rest, but it would be good to confirm that upward trajectory.

Also I'm not equipped for dosing advice, but I think the TR protocol is not to take a reduction unless the cat's BG drops under 50? But it would be good to get one of our resident Lantus experts in here to confirm.

You handled things like a pro today. I'm sorry you had all this stress right before class starts back up! ❤️

Sarah, this is a link written by one of our moderators, Marje. it is DATA HEAVY and the calculations make my eyes cross, but I think it is the best resource for figuring out the percentage of carbs from calories. She notes in her write up that some online calculators, including specifically the Scheyder, are inaccurate, and she argues that her calculations will offer more accurate results. The biggest issue in making these calculations is that companies offer a % of guaranteed analysis of specific nutrients, which is not an accurate number (she explains this in the link). Sometimes companies will offer the specific numbers; sometimes they will not (sometimes when they do, Chewy is a great place to look for these numbers). So, I tend to rely on the calculations on the food links page on the forum, specifically the CKD and Mady’s chart because 1) these charts are more up to date and 2) the people compiling these charts have gone directly to the company for the actual and not GA numbers. Dr Lisa’s chart is excellent, as is her explanation about food in general, but it is dated. You are looking for the %of calories from carbs. Calculating % Calories from Carbohydrates

Once Pip has a couple of numbers that are flat and/or rising, you should be safe to stop feeding MC/HC. Remember, food stays in the system for one-two hours, so you want to be sure to test two hours after carb manipulating to ensure he is not dropping. As he passes his typical nadir, his numbers will begin rising, naturally.

Under TR, dose reductions are earned when Pip drops below 50, as a newly diagnosed diabetic. This is outlined on the dose methods sticky. Here is that language (and I always post from the stickies even if people have read it 100 x) because, ultimately, each of us is responsible for making decisions about our kitties, even when we receive feedback from others, and there is power in our own personal knowledge.
  • If kitty drops below 40 (long term diabetic) or 50 (newly diagnosed diabetic) reduce the dose by 0.25 unit. If kitty has a history of not holding reductions well or if reductions are close together... sneak the dose down by shaving the dose rather than reducing by a full quarter unit.
I think you are wise to be testing him, especially in the pm cycle, at +1 because of his tendency to nose dive. ~20% lower than the preshot is a good indicator that the cycle will be active. When that happens, food is the tool to keep him surfing in safe numbers.

Ok! I thought he was on ProZinc, still, carb food does not loose its effect , let me tag a Lantus member for you but I’m still here, he’s still safe continue the same protocol every 1/2 hour feed test, right now give 2 tsp of HC

You all did great last night.
I’m sorry I wasn’t around (fell asleep after a long night Sunday night).
I’m not qualified for dosing advice either, but am always happy to help and lend support 💓

So glad all went well last night and hope you got some sleep Sarah.

Good luck today back at school and hope Pip surfs very gently 🏄‍♂️🌊🤞😻

Good morning, checking in on Pip, His AMPS this morning is expected to be high because of all the carbs last night, Hope you have a good day
