Treats for diabetic cats

Hiya, my 13 year old cat jezebel was diagnosed as diabetic a few months ago. Mostly shes doing absolutely fine, but she's struggling to regain weight lost when she was off her food due to nausea. Her appetite is voracious to say the least (always has been, it's not a new symptom), so im looking for things i can give her between her morning and night meals to help her gain weight without spiking her blood sugar

These treats were recommended, but i see now they have yam powder in them, which is a complex carb. Are they suitable? I intend to start giving her plain cooked chicken from tomorrow onward once i go to the store, but i was looking for guidance on more convenience-type treats

thanks so much

Carb wise these are ok to give her. Not sure about the yam powder and how it would affect her. You might just have to experiment as ECID and what might affect one doesn't affect another.
Usually any freeze dried treats should be ok for your sugar baby. Or those churu tubes. Of course treats always in moderation.
Are you feeding small meals throughout the day to keep her going? Also if she's newly diagnosed it might take her few months to gain her weight back. Good luck but you're in the right place to get all the advice you need 🐱🤗

Wanted to say the same as Karolina about smaller meals throughout the day of her regular low carb wet food.

I’m traveling atm so it’s hard for me to copy a link, but if you type “treats” in the quick search there is a thread dedicated to low carb treats.

We've been instructed to only feed her twice a day, 12 hours apart, and to give her her insulin at that time. I know the vet wanted to stabilise her blood sugar (it was a little high a week or so ago at a check up) before we introduce more wet food into her diet. She currently gets a sachet and a half in the morning and at night

Thank you, ill have a wee look! I was in a bit of a panic when i posted so i didnt even think to take the time to check for a megathread! Ill speak to the vet about giving her more wet food through the day

Ok! Common sence tells a human diabetic to eat several meals during the day to not only keep the insulin in check but to avoid hypoglycemia esposo sé, same thing for cats, what insulin are you giving, ProZinc and Lantus are the best insulina for cats they are a12- hour insulin easy on the cats system feeding only at shot time is old old school, he should have his meal after shot, a small treat or meal 2 hours after shot and several 3-4 small meals during the day, as well that a diabetic cat needs to have a diet of wet can or raw food between 0-10% carbs and home testing is very important, you do not want to give insulin without knowing his glucose level and testing several times during the day. 2-3 times, most members use the ReliOn Premier human monitor and strips, it is reliable and inexpensive, in our Main Forum you will Find sticky notes with valuable information, we are here to help you, so keep posting your concerns, please let us know the insulin name:bighug:

As Maria has mentioned on her post you should feed several small meals throughout the day. You're welcome to check in with your vet however a lot of vets are not well versed in feline diabetes. I know mine wasn't and if it wasn't for the FB group and this forum my cat probably wouldn't be here today.
Also when you have a moment please add the signature to your profile, that way it's easier for members to answer your questions as your signature contains the basic info we need to know.

Thank you so much for the guidance, ill do that just now! Yeah im struggling with conflicting information but i really do feel she should be eating more often

Ok ive updated my signature so hopefully that'll help! Im currently realising that we've really not been given much guidance at all by the vets in general so I might be better off making an introduction post and listing my concerns, info, that kind of thing, and going from there. Like for instance no vet has told us to check her bloods daily. Quite the opposite, just last week I asked and was told i could check weekly but dont stress or get bogged down in it, just check occasionally and go from there! Im buying a monitor and strips as we speak

Is there a board thats best to post my intro post on?

Thanks for creating a signature and adding your kitty's photo. She's a cutie. If you wanna post an intro post you can use this board.
Not sure who else is in the UK and which insulin is available to you but Caninsulin is not great for kitties. You should be using Lantus or Prozinc. Do you need a prescription in the UK to get insulin?

We do need a prescription yes, and we're currently under the care of the pdsa which is a charity, so im not sure changing her insulin by request is an option, but im going to make an appointment to talk about that and other things brought up here
