Stoney - new thread

Usually when we start seeing blue nadirs we hold the dose a little longer- a few extra cycles. I think it will be okay because you have some wiggle room for him to go lower when he clears this bounce. We don’t want to send him right back into another bounce (but it may happen anyway.)

Thank you! I’ll be testing at +2, +4, +6, etc. I am very curious to see what he does today. I knew I was too eager in increasing because of the bounce.

Oh man. He just doesn’t want to move much in his BG. I would probably probably go ahead and talk to my vet about sending some blood to Michigan State University for IAA and acro testing. For the acromegaly, it’s the IGF-1 test. I hope you had a good Thanksgiving, too. We did!

I will send them an email shortly. I would call but I just had some dental work done. No fun!

Our Thanksgiving was great! My parents live almost 2 hours away and joined our dinner with my inlaws.

Good evening!

We took one of our other cats into the vet today for a weird coughing/sneezing fit. When doing the work up our vet heard a slight heart murmur. We are being referred to Texas A&M. We also asked about the IGF-1 test for Stoney. She said she knows about the IGF-1 test but needs to look more into it. And the IAA test she has never heard of. She was at a conference a few weeks ago and there was someone who is an internist for feline diabetes at Texas A&M. We’re calling tomorrow to schedule the IGF-1. She doesn’t understand why he isn’t regulated (loose term - it’s still very early into his diagnosis). She also said she thinks we could try a different insulin but did not provide it today, so we may have to get the script through the person at A&M. Phew. There goes our house savings. 💸

And by the way, I am so sorry to hear about this and your other cat’s heart murmur. I hope it’s nothing serious. Many cats do have heart murmurs, but it’s good to get it checked out. On the other hand, I know from firsthand experience that cats with heart disease can live a long time with proper treatment.

Sticky - Acromegaly and Other High Dose Conditions: What We Know

Have you read this? It should not be too hard for your vet to read up on insulin auto antibodies. Both tests are run at Michigan State University diagnostic lab.
Vet said we can do the IGF test and she’ll send it off. I wasn’t at this appointment so I don’t know if she told my husband what lab it would be sent to. I’m assuming it’s the MSU lab, but will ask when I take him in to actually get it done. I’ll ask about the IAA, too. Is that also a blood test? I am going to check out the sticky.

We are being referred to A&M for an echo. It’s about a 3.5 hr drive from SETX. I am curious to meet this mystery man who is learning about FD. I am hoping we can bring both of our problem children and get their appointments same day or relatively close to that considering the drive!

This stupid board won’t let me send a screenshot right now! Argh. Also, I tried posting my replies last night and it would do nothing!

Thank you!!! This is a really dumb question. Do you know where I can purchase the packaging? I searched the code and couldn’t find any purchase option. Same for how to purchase the actual test. I definitely just woke up and haven’t had coffee yet, so I am not fully awake and am probably just overlooking that information.

Edit- I should have tried to create a login before I posted this reply lol. Should my vet be creating it, or me?

Your vet should be able to take care of all of this for you.

@Suzanne & Darcy - I have a quick question. My husband and I will be out of town Saturday evening for my mom’s graduation. It will be during Stoney’s shot time, but my husband will be coming back home that evening. We want to skip the shot because it’s a pain to haul him an hour and a half away, but we don’t want to move the shot because it’s a pain to adjust when my husband isn’t here to help before work and class, and don’t want to mess up our timing. He’s already up to 6u and increasing Wednesday. Also, he does have an appointment tomorrow to get his blood drawn for IGF and I believe IAA. I spoke to them on the phone and over email about the IAA test and I will ask them again if we are doing that one as well.

So you are wanting to skip the shot?

I would just skip and not worry about it. He will be fine. It would be good to get a test when you get home to see how high (or not) he goes without the shot. Stoney would probably prefer to stay home anyway!

Now that Stoney is over 5 units in dose, you can increase in .5 unit increments so his next dose (which he is ready for at any time) will be 6.5 units. If/when he gets to 10 units, the increases are in whole units or ten percent of the total dose.

Thank you for confirming! I didn’t think it would be a problem. My husband will be going back home that evening while I am staying in Houston. I have a very full weekend. I agree, Stoney would prefer to stay home!

Phew. I plan on increasing tomorrow morning. I would have today, but he has a vet appointment in an about an hour and a half, and I didn’t want to chance it with him already being stressed out. He’s finally getting the IGF and hopefully my vet listened to me about the IAA test. I’ll let you know how that goes when I return. He’s all cozy right now, without a clue what is coming today. Lol

Oh, I just want to hug that adorable boy!

We actually do see cats here with IAA. I would want to go ahead and do both tests at the same time just so I didn’t have to go back and do an additional test later.

Couldn’t agree more. I hope they don’t give me pushback. They usually will do any test I ask, but she didn’t know about IAA testing. I sent a few screenshots from the MSU site so I’m hoping she did some research and will allow us to do it!

Congratulations to your mom on her graduation! From what is she graduating/what is her degree?
Associates of Arts with a Business Major! She wants to go back for a bachelors but she is embarrassed to tell people that because she started college later in life. I told her I don’t even have my associates degree and I am 27! There is nothing to be embarrassed of at all. She graduated and that’s a huge accomplishment!

You are right! A big accomplishment. She should continue of she wants to! Congratulations to Mom!

Did everything go okay at the vet this week?
Hey Suzanne! Yes, I believe they took blood for both tests. I am just waiting for results. There’s a chance we don’t get them until after Christmas, which is understandable. Stoney is doing well! I did have him look at one of his eyes. It was really red. She said there is no scratch so we have been putting his normal eye ointment in it and it’s slowly clearing up. He has feline herpes so he gets the occasional flare up!

What kind of ointment do you use for the FHV? Does it help? I have a few cats with FHV and I usually just add Viralys (Lysine) to their food and it helps the eyes. Of course if it looks like maybe a secondary bacterial infection may be brewing we will use ointment or drops.

We have been using Erythomicyn Ophthalmic Ointment since we got him. I’d say it works in a few days. I actually had to stop by Petco last night, and looked at the Lysine powder. It was $33 for a tiny tub! I bought the gel on Chewy about 2 weeks ago and none of the cats like it! I am going to check out the prices on their powder!

Oh yes. They hate the gel! I use the Viralys powder and buy from Chewy. It’s quite a small scoop and my cats like it.
