Hi all I took Mikey for his yearly blood work and shots. His blood work shows a Creatine level of 2.3 and an BUN level abnormal reading. He is 2nd stage renal disease

The veterinarian wants to change his food to a Royal Canine renal Diet, but is not low carb- the wet may be ok. He said that of course I am dealing with 2 diseases.

A part of me thinks I should keep him on his diet now that is low carb, yet understand that renal disease can affect diabetes. But if I put him on another non low carb diet that will also be problematic to his diabetes

I am so confused by all of this. Has anyone dealt with this. Mikey seems ok except for lots of urinating , staying close to me and more vocal - the vocal stuff could be age as he is 13
Thanks,
Tom

Newer guidelines don’t necessarily rush to RX food so early. Heck my 9 year olds have had higher than expected creatinine since they were 3! You might want to look for lower phosphorus canned food on Tanya’s CRF. I’ve switched my two to homemade cooked to get rid of the bone in their food. Was the USG low ?

You’re where we were in May of this year. Same creatinine. How’s his phosphorus? I didn’t change foods and just started adding water to the food to help with hydration. 6 months later his numbers are now at the higher end of stage 2, which is probably expected just with the nature of things and how they progress. You could join Tanya’s Groups.io for CKD, lots of knowledgeable folks there too.

Are you still following SLGS for dosing?

I will get the actual written blood panel on Tuesday and find the phosphorus level. I am still following the SLGS protocol

I will get the written copy of Blood panel on Monday or Tuesday. He wants me to go to Royal Canine but that is high carb

Sounds good. I only asked because (and I now see you have a different reduction point in your signature), he went a little lower today and last week, with SLGS you would reduce. Just an observation, see what the others think.

I probably will reduce tomorrow.
I may check in with Tanya’s group in a few days. I really don’t want to change his diet to the expensive prescription stuff. He is so picky and does not even love his food except for the Churo treats that he devours . Vet suggested them to give him moisture since he eats dry.

He has decided that if the dry food is in the bowl it is not good and demands a top off every time I enter the kitchen. I toss more away then he eats

Thanks

Hi Tom
You might want to try Weruva Pates
low carb/ low

phosphorus
if you tap on this link and look at post #32 I listed some Weruva pates for another member that's low carb/ low phosphorus with kitties with CKD and diabetes
New member 11/8 and I am tired

You want the metabolizable energy profile percentage of carbs to be less than 10%, and the phosphorus which Weruva lists in Minerals to be less than 250 mg per 100 cals. So you have to look at two different places in the Weruva charts. This is where I was told where to look by a member

You can even check out the soulistic pates
PÂTÉ — Soulistic Pet
When you click in one of the flavors then click on
COMPLETE NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION (link to page)
and look at the same two places like on the weruva

What food is he eating right now, Tom? The ones mentioned in your signature? Fancy Feast pates, Wysong Epigen 90 and Dr. Elseys dry food?

I'm wondering if you would be comfortable with a reduction point of 70 and holding the dose? He's not spending a lot of time in greens on this dose and keeping his numbers under control would reduce the strain on the kidneys.

I am doing the dose hold at 70. He is on FF pate( but it is hit and miss, a mixture of Dr Elseys. clean Protein and Epigen 90

Thanks

Thanks! It will be a challenge to find diabetic and Renal friendly food. Not sure if it is possible to find a good food match. More will revealed. I am feeling a tad overwhelmed attempting to find foods that will work for both.
I am not going to do prescription renal food which the vet said is NOT low carb

Great-thanks! I will investigate

Hi Tom,

This list of foods specifically lists phosphorus levels and is meant to help cats with CKD! Sorry if you've already seen it, I just thought it could be very helpful. They even have a list of what's recommended to start with.

My cat doesn't have CKD so I have no personal experience, but he does have other chronic issues and it's so hard to deal with multiple at once (especially when their treatments contradict).

Like Diane mentioned, Weruva has some good options. We don't use their specifically super low phosphorus line but I do feed Weruva and it seems like really great food. Certainly more expensive than FF was, but cheaper than prescription food and without the carb problem.

I will take a look at the forum. I also am going to check out Weruva as that may be an option . It of course having the 2 issues is a tad frustrating. I am going to use up the food he has and then make a decision for next steps Thanks
