So glad to see numbers back in the greens last night and this morning.

I stopped giving him the Gaba and Prozacin this morning, as I think we are out of the woods in terms of pain/bladder spasms. We are continuing the Clavamox for another week, which as I mentioned yesterday is causing Jude some inappetence. I had to give him some HC this morning to get some food on board for his shot. Even with that HC, his bg was only 98 two hours later, so I'm guessing he's running a bit low. This always worries me when I'm working 😟. I'll start with the Mirataz tonight when I can sit down and actually read the package insert. For those of you who use Mirataz, are there any side effects I should be looking for? And, does it make them super-duper hungry or just boost the appetite a bit??

I purchased some new litter yesterday and will begin trying to gradually introduce that into the litter boxes.

Hi Mary, good luck with finishing the meds, and adding the mirtaz.
Some people say you can give less than is recommended if it does the trick.
I am sure you know, but wear gloves and clean the ear (or opposite ear before applying the med).
I have heard it can make them very hungry and very vocal.
(It never did that with Ivy, she just ate when I used it, as was desired)

Thanks for this information. I thought about giving him half a dose to start with to see how it affects him. Should I just clean with a little soap and water? Or just wiping with water and a cloth? Alcohol is drying, right?
 
I gave mirtazapine to a cat and she was quite symptomatic. I’d never use it again. Mirataz doesn’t seem to be better if it works. I tried mirataz with Chai but it did nothing. I prefer cyproheptadine as it can be given twice a day. Zyrtec has worked for a couple of my cats without any side effects.

I used just warm water on a cotton pad (round) then pat dry.
With the methimazole transdermal since it’s every day they told me to use witch hazel every third day.

I do think the alcohol would be too drying.
Just to make sure the residue is gone so the meds can be absorbed.
I was vigilant about my routine. 🥰

Zyrtec is an appetite stimulant for cats?

It’s an antihistamine and like cyproheptadine can act like an appetite stimulant in cats.
I give Mocha half a regular strength pill every day for his allergies and have for some time without side effects. She’s been on it a few years so I dint know of it still increases her appetite but she has a good one. I gave it to Chai when she was sick and it helped. Worth a try.
 
I'm late, but to chime in another voice about Mirataz:

It definitely made Xander extremely hungry, to the point of intensely trying to pursue our food (which isn't like him), and very vocal. I guess it's referred to as "Meowitaz" for a reason. 😅

I'd definitely recommend trying a half dose first to see how he reacts.

With Xander, I give him half a dose each at about 9 am and 9 pm. About 5-7 hours later he'll be ravenous, so it works well to make sure he wants to eat his most important meals. The vet thinks it's weird that he reacts this way rather than a once a day dose being enough, but if I i do that he's just screaming for food non-stop for like 5 hours until it passes and then not interested any other time.

I'd also recommend alternating ears. Long-term usage like we've been doing is really harsh on their ears and builds up. I just use a little unfragranced pet wipe before each dose (letting it dry before applying). Since it's still been sticking as a crust afterward I've started trying just a little bit of Vaseline in the off ear and it does seem to help soften the flakes to fall off better, but his ears are definitely still irritated.

Thanks, Brianna! I still haven't started the Mirataz because I'm a little worried about the side effects. Did you see Elise's comment about the Zyrtec? Have you ever used it? I have some in the house and thought I might try that first to see if it works, but I want to ask Jude's vet about it (I'm seeing him today for some more Clavamox).

I've used mirtazapine & Mirataz in the past. Hated the effect on 2 of my cats. The side effects can be them constantly talking and agitation. I had 3 that I'd used it on, and 2 made me find another. So it it doesn't happen to all. I would sit on the floor with them and they looked like they just couldn't get comfortable. They wouldn't sit for long, and kept walking around in circles or back and forth past me. Crying out the entire time and even when sitting down. It had me actually crying a couple times with one, because she would just look at me and cry. Like she was uncomfortable and wanted me to fix it. I was always like.... I don't know what you want me to do.
I started using Elura. Horrible taste in guessing, but it's 24hrs and doesn't take hours to kick in, but 10-20 minutes before my girls started chowing down. I bought Entyce to try as it's flavored, but not used it yet.
And yes, zyrtec has had no side effects but makes mine hungry too.

I did, but no, I haven't tried that! Our experience was just that he was a lot more chill and just excited for food time when we did half at a time instead of a full dose. I do dislike the ear problem, but part of why we need the transdermal is that it's impossible to get him to take an appetite stimulant if he won't eat because he has no appetite.

We have Cerenia; will this work? The only symptom of nausea I'm seeing in Jude is he has vomited a couple of times (since being on the Clavamox). Once was right after he ate last night (after I had given him the Clavamox). The other time was the day before just before his preshot at night, and I assumed that he vomited because he was hungry (it was mostly foam), but I'm not sure. Should I assume he's nauseous?
