In remission but still peeing tons

I've posted a couple times before, but my cat, Lemon, was diagnosed this past month and started insulin, the vet incorrectly dosed him starting 3u of Lantus. After a couple days he had a hypoglycemic event. Since then he has been declared to be in remission. I am still at home testing him every single day and he has consistently been around 60-80 (130 when he was brought to the vet).

Anyways, when he started Lantus all his previous symptoms went away, frequent peeing, peeing outside the litterbox, and horrible smelling diarrhea being the main ones. Now, despite great numbers, all those symptoms are back.

I'm so confused as to what could be going on and now I don't trust my vet. I don't use this site all that much so I apologize if I'm formatting things incorrectly.

Hi, more knowledgeable members will be along soon. You're right to be distrustful of your vet- starting at 3 Units !!!! You and your cat must have had such a stressful time.

You mentioning foul smelling diarrhea reminded me of my cat when he has pancreatitis so I wanted to ask whether Lemon had any other symptoms? Nausea or being off his food? Did the vet do any bloodwork before starting insulin? Do you know if he had ketones or do you have any keto sticks to test urine with? Sorry for all the questions I know it's overwhelming at the beginning.

Diabetic cats can stay low for a while after having a hypo event so you're right to keep testing he could be in remission or there could be something else going on. You're in the right place- the members here have been so fantastic with me :)

A few questions for you....

Do you have a spreadsheet? It would be very helpful to see what Lemon's blood glucose numbers look like.

When Lemon was diagnosed, I'm assuming you changed his food. What did you switch to? Sometimes a change in diet can cause GI issues. If you've added water to your cat's food, it can also cause the increased urination.

The GI issues could be related to something entirely different than diabetes. Inflammatory bowel can cause diarrhea. I'd suggest a trial of a probiotic -- specifically S. boulardii which is great for controlling diarrhea.

He's sorta been nauseous, he throws up occasionally, but he LOVES food so never turns down a meal, haha!

The vet did a full senior panel before starting insulin. I don't know if he had ketones but I suppose I could go get some testers.

I don't have a spreadsheet, just app for my glucometer. He's been consistently between 60-85 for the past week and a half, with the exception of it spiking to 130 at the vet. I have not had to give him insulin, for over two weeks now.

I switched to tiki cat, specifically ahi tuna and mackerel (crude protein 17%) and their high protein herring and salmon (crude protein 42%, only feed him this sparingly as toppers). I would wonder if it's the food too, but it's now been over a month since it got switched.

Are you able to call you vet and ask them to email a copy of the test results? Then you can upload to here, it will give us an idea of what can be ruled out

I can't help with the food as I'm in the uk so don't recognise those types. But as Sienne and Gabby says changing lemons food could have upset his stomach.

How long has he been on the new food and been fine? When did he start having diarrhea and lots of peeing again?

The food was changed about a month ago (October 20th) when he was diagnosed, not even a few days after starting insulin all the previous symptoms went away. Insulin started Oct. 23, hypo event was Oct. 27. He had GI distressed but not as bad as the diarrhea now or before, for about a week due to the hypo event.

Now, this week, 2 weeks from the hypo event, he started peeing a lot and all over, and his diarrhea is back as bad as it was before diagnosis.

Not that I dont trust y'all either, but I'm not positive that it's the food change that's the main problem. Doesn't make sense to me why he would get better and then worse again if it was just the food.

I have a paper copy somewhere, I will see if I can find it. His levels were all over the place, I know that but I'm not sure what it all means.

No we're just saying it's a possibility when changing food not that it's definitely what's causing it- like you said if Lemon was fine for a week in the middle with no diarrhea it seems less likely. I'm actually really interested to see if they tested his pancreatic enzymes because to me there's some red flags in the symptoms you're describing. My cat also still eats when he has pancreatitis which is unusual.

Did they do any tests on his urine? And did you give antibiotics for anything at diagnosis?
They tested his urine but did not give him any antibiotics, I'm guessing she thought that the insulin would fix most stuff and then we could figure out anything else that's wrong. But I don't know if I can afford another vet visit until a week or so :(
