Did his 18 hr curve and gave a .25U increase this morning. Should I be checking his nadir this early into dose change or wait a day or two since it takes a bit?

Also off topic(kinda) question: for those who use ReliOn, I know there's a difference in numbers but is it still accurate enough? The Alphatrak strips are so expensive and despite loving that it's made for animals it's eating a hole in my bank especially since I'm testing more frequently.

Also, I can't remember, but would I have to start a new sheet once I switch glucometers?

You don't need to start a new sheet, just add an extra row and note there that you changed meters.

For testing, always test nadirs, always. And +2 before that to get a sense of how the cycle's going to go, night and day. You probably already know that cats can go low at night.

Insulin is a hormone, so it isn't like taking an aspirin and you can expect that your headache's going to go away in 20 minutes. It's always unpredictable, especially when you start treating your cat, what your cat is going to do with the insulin it gets.

Excellent, thank you ! He seems to nadir at +3 it feels like so I'll go from there.

I hope you'll start to see better numbers soon. You're doing the right things, adjusting his dose according to how he's doing after the correct number of cycles, and asking for advice here.
He's so new to Lantus, that you don't yet know where his nadir is. For most cats on Lantus it's around +6, but every cat is different and you're learning the sugar dance together 😸. There will be some surprises in store!

Hi Rin, The human glucometers are accurate, just the range will be different to see when you take reductions.
While it’s 68 for a pet meter, with SLGS, it’s now 90 where you reduce if he drops under that number.

I believe either @Marje and Gracie or @Bandit's Mom can adjust your spreadsheet so it now works for using a human glucometer
(Thank you ladies💕)

Sometimes cats will show you what an increase in dose can do in the first couple cycles, sometimes they take 5-6 cycles to show you what it can do.

If you are following SLGS for dosing, the reduction point is 90 regardless of type of meter being used. The 68 mentioned above is for those following TR for dosing, and using a pet meter. If using a human meter and following TR, the reduction point for newly diagnosed cats is 50.

Moving to human meters for cost saving is extremely common here. When I started, there were no AT's, human BG meters were all we used and it still worked. My vet and I used to compare cheapest places to get strips for our human meters. The TR protocol was developed before the AT, and the research was done with human meters.

This is great to know. I haven't purchased a ReliOn yet but I'll likely be doing so when it comes time for me to start getting new strips.

I figured it would possibly take a few cycles - I'll keep this in mind. He was exclusively on the Libre for tracking for the first 2 weeks and I just felt like his numbers were so weird with it because it would be like high 200s one minute and then 5 minutes later it would take a sharp drop to 60 and start ringing at me. That alarm kept me up at all hours of the night only to go check on him and see him acting perfectly normal. 😅 Eesh. I have an old spreadsheet I made myself before posting here with all sorts of Libre numbers and for a while he was cruising around green/blue. Fingers crossed we get there again soon.

Lots of good info here though - I appreciate everyone helping out. I offer cat tax below (featuring his post-Libre bald spot lol)
