Sorry that I didn't manage to get in here yesterday with a dental update, but it was an exhausting day (and night). All seemed to go fine. Xander had 8 extractions, 2 of which were both of his precious, beloved fangies. πŸ˜”πŸ’” We were originally told that he had tooth resorption, but they said that they found no evidence of resorption at all and that this was entirely periodontal disease. They mentioned that his BG was in the 500s when he woke up (though the Libre doesn't show anything that drastic - the closest I got was a 400+ and not for that timeframe. πŸ€”)

When we first got home he was very happy and rolling around enjoying being pet (and pawing at his mouth a little, but didn't seem distressed/pained). Around 11pm he seemed to shut down and I imagine that's when the meds wore off. Very unresponsive to sound or being called or touched. Wouldn't eat anymore. I stayed up with him until 1, slept for about an hour and then saw that he was dropping and hadn't eaten the food I left, so I got up to be with him. He cuddled happily and I dozed for a few minutes until the Libre alarm went off (53) at about 4. Our HC food is the most solid food we have, so I just gave him some spoonfuls of the gravy in it. He came up before having it and then surfed pretty well after that.

Tomorrow morning is his ultrasound and they once again want us to fast after midnight. I tried to advocate for it being outdated and too long for a diabetic and she basically said she wasn't worried about his blood sugar, it needed to be midnight. Obviously based on last night she should be worried about it. I'm going to just have to skip tonight, because yes, he will need food around +8, as I predicted the other day. I also mentioned that when his stomach is empty he vomits, like he had the morning of the dental, and wouldn't that be bad for his stitches? At that point she said that I could give him 1 tsp of food if I thought it would prevent vomiting. πŸ™„ I don't exactly feel comfortable relying on 1 tsp of HC food to help him if he needs it, so again, the conclusion I come to is to skip. We'll also have to skip in the morning because of the timing of the appointment, so it'll be 2 missed doses, which sucks.

I feel bad that we're gonna have to betray him again so quickly. 😩 He couldn't hate going there more.

They gave us 3 days/pills of Onsior, which doesn't seem like very much. I've seen bupe mentioned so often that I figured that's what she'd give us. I hope this is strong enough and enough time to get him through the pain. 8 extractions is a beast.

Zoom in on his lil mouth. Look how they massacred my boy 😭 He's still precious. I'll sure miss those fangies, though.

Thinking of you and Xander!

Thank you so so much to everyone for all of the wishes, vines and support!! If it weren't for all of you, we'd never get through any of this. πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

Awwww poor fangies!!! I hope he feels better soon like egon does. We were given 3 onsior pills although one was the fake filler bubble so we actually only got two pills…. Ugh. But by the third day egon was back to his normal self anyways and didn’t need it. Although we didn’t have the extra appointments in there like Xander does and egon only had 2 extractions. I hope it’s enough for you guys and he starts feeling better quickly!!

Thanks, Mady! I hope he does too! I'm so glad Egon felt better quickly (despite having an extra filler bubble and only winding up with 2 pills - wtf? Ours have filler bubbles too. I hope there are at least the 3 in there.)

Oh sweet Xander. I’m relieved to read he’s doing ok, despite such a mouthful of extractions. I’m so sorry about them having to remove the fangies 😒

I’m glad you’re on the other side of the surgery and now he can heal, hopping it helps with his overall better health πŸ’œ

You’re doing a fantastic job taking such great care of your baby as always, BriannaπŸ«‚
Sending lots of healing vines and wishing you lots of good luck on Thursday. Please let us know how he’s recovering β€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

Thank you so much, Staci!! I'm glad it's over. I can't wait til the ultrasound is over too. Very worried about what they might find there. I hope the teeth were the only problem. :nailbiting:

Eight extractions!!! That's a lot! And the fangies :arghh:. I'm so sad about them.
I hope his healing is swift, and that his numbers will begin to drop with those problem teeth gone.
Please keep us posted on the ultrasound. I know you'll be glad (and he will too) when this is all over. Fingers and paws crossed as he goes in tomorrow.

Poor guy! That is a lot of extractions and I hope your ticket to better regulation. :bighug: I hope the ultrasound goes well and I would think this would be the best possible time, as doped up as he can possibly be and hopefully that's it for a long time! Get it all out of the way.

We will miss those cutie fangies but I know he will feel so much better with a healthier mouth. πŸ’™πŸ’šπŸˆβ€β¬›

Not the fangies!!!! Noooo, especially with Halloween coming up! But still, glad it’ll mean his mouth feels better and will hopefully help with his BG numbers.

So frustrating they won’t come around to the very clear research that says things are different for diabetics. Either way, I’m sure he’ll recover okay from the two missed shots - I remember how he didn’t do so bad when he had a couple misses around the time you went away (if I’m remembering correctly). Sending healing vines for the teeth and hope the ultrasound goes smoothly and gives peace of mind with nothing shocking!! πŸ–€πŸƒπŸ€—

It’s sad about losing the teeth, but imagine how much better he’s going to feel. Great job Brianna! We also had the 3 Onsior (and gaba) and that seemed to be enough.
Yeah agreed here. Sad for the aesthetics but so glad he is doing relatively well.

Bell lost one of her fangs when I scared her when she was about to jump and she missed her jump and banged her head. 5 minutes later she was eating dinner and I even checked to make sure there wasn't any blood. I had to compare old pictures to make sure I wasn't losing it when I didn't see her other fang. The vet had to dig out the root, which I think was pretty rotten, so I'm guessing he will feel a whole lot better once he gets over the hump here. Bell doesn't skip a beat while eating after multiple extractions. She does drool a little bit more out of the side with the missing fangie. πŸ€— πŸ€— πŸƒπŸƒπŸƒπŸƒβ€οΈ

Yikes on the 8 teeth. That must have bothered him - he will feel so much better. The manufacturers recommendation for Onsior is no more than 3 days of it. Hopefully he'll be over the worst by then.

Neko ate quite handily after having a bony growth removed from her jaw bone. That must have been sore. But - acro appetite.

The ultrasound, if they are looking at his GI system, is more concerned about getting a clean set of bowels. So no food, not a worry about the BG. Having said that, Neko ever fasted for any of her ultrasounds - a few of them were last minute decisions. The specialist still was able to get the information he needed. I haven't been able to convince current kitty's ultrasound specialist that it's OK to eat either. :banghead: A skip sounds like a good idea, especially with those greens on his SS today.

The fangieeeeees 😭 I am too, but if they were causing him pain of course they weren't worth having. It was just his, like, signature thing lol

He was already showing some green on the same dose that was giving us nothing which really surprised me! I would've expected the inflammation from the procedure itself to keep those numbers up, but nope. That seems promising!

It is sooo many extractions! Poor dude. I'm also hoping that it's the key to unlocking some real progress.

That's a good point; hopefully it's better now than later! He does have a checkup for his stitches in a couple weeks and I already feel guilty about it lol

Same! I miss them, but I hope he'll start feeling so much better without them. πŸ₯Ί

Oh of course, it's totally worth it! Even if it only stopped his pain and never even helped his numbers, it'd still be worth it. I just want him to be a happy, comfortable guy.

That's great to know, thank you! I have been hoping that the Gaba would help too. Yesterday after his dose of Onsior (he can have it at noon) he seemed very happy for several hours.

What a sweet guy! I hope he's feeling better pronto, and the ultrasound goes well in every way. And I hope you're 100% on top of any discomfort.
If it's any help at all, my cat Jack had all his teeth extracted, and has never been happier.
Xander is absolutely gorgeous.

Thank you so much!! πŸ₯Ί I also hope I'm on top of any discomfort (I'm giving him what I was instructed to), I just hope it's enough! The vet said she could give him another injection of pain meds while he's there for the ultrasound today, so that should also give me an extra day of meds (since I don't have to use one of the 3 pills today).

That is great to know! Did he have them all extracted at once? How long did it take him to heal/seem more like himself?

I know, my lil vampurr has been de-vamped! 😭

But yes, desperately hoping that he both feels much better and that it's the key to unlocking real progress with his numbers. 🀞🏻

It is frustrating! Oh well. At least it should be the last time now. It is frustrating to skip (feels like having to hit the brakes as soon as we get up to speed), but hopefully you're right and he bounces back like he did last month.

Thank you, Briana!! πŸ’œ

Oh man, that's a lot of extractions 😿 Hope he recovers quickly. Even without his cute fangies, he still has such a precious little face.πŸ₯Ή Sending big hugs πŸ€— and healing vines his way πŸƒπŸƒπŸƒπŸƒπŸƒβ€οΈβ€πŸ©Ή

It is!! Jeez. I wasn't expecting quite so many. But whatever, if they hurt, get rid of them! And then they also marked 2 teeth as missing. I asked about that today (if they must've fallen out, or if those were victim to resorption, or maybe he never grew them, I dunno) and she said that those ones were fully resorped and healed over so they didn't end up needing to help them. So I guess technically they did see resorption, but not on any of the teeth left. πŸ€” That's not quite "no evidence of resorption" that they said the first time though. Weird.

Thank you, Kat!! πŸ’œπŸ’œπŸ’œ

BTW, he looks really stoned in those pictures. Like, his eyes are so dilated you can see into his little soul.

Haha, he does! But he seems to always have really dilated pupils even before this; it's like he's just got Disney eyes. They're always a bit hazy looking to me (I mentioned this to the vet and they weren't concerned) so I wonder if he can't see super well and that's why they stay dilated. I dunno. I feel like he's just almost always looked like that.

He did seem to be stoned when we first got home though. Like, catnip type stoned lol

Jack did indeed have all his teeth extracted at once. Fortunately, my vet who is wonderful and specializes in imaging, refers dental patients to another vet clinic, who specialize in this. A clinic run by two wonderful women. My vet told me that Jack will be able to live a completely normal life, and he is actually much happier and more affectionate since then.

It took him about 3 days to seem like he wasn't in discomfort/zonked out by the Buprenorphine. I brought him in the next day just to have his mouth checked to make sure he was healing nicely. I don't recall how long it took him to heal completely, because it all went so well.

I am wishing the same for your sweet boy. Black cats are the best!

OMG!! Poor Bell!! If it didn't even seem to hurt then yeah, it must've been in bad enough shape to come out/break easily. 😩 It sucks that it's so easy for their teeth to get so bad. I'm glad she was okay after that; that would freak me out so much.

So glad to know that she's done well after the extractions!! I don't mind the drool and missing fangies as long as he's happy and healthy!

Yeah, yikes!! So many! I'm really hopeful that that was the issue and he'll feel way better now. (Nervous about the ultrasound, but have hope with how bad his teeth turned out to be that we won't find anything else. 🀞🏻)

A bony growth? 😳 That sounds awful! Poor Neko! Like a tumor made of bone??

I'm glad you agree that it was worth the skip! I felt guilty about it, but I wasn't gonna not feed him if he was low or risk messing up the ultrasound we'd waited so long for. Also sounds like convincing them about the fasting for so long is a lost cause for now, unfortunately. I hope at some point they'll catch up to their own field's research.

Wow, the clinic you went to for it sounds amazing! I'm glad you were able to get him somewhere so good; I'm sure that made a big difference for him!

3 days sounds about like what I've heard and fortunately isn't too long. We have a followup in 2 weeks to check on his stitches. They said he may drool some blood and I've seen plenty of drool and food, but no blood, so I'm hoping that's a good sign that it's healing exceptionally well.

Thank you so much for the wishes and for sharing your own experience! It always helps me to hear that.

Black cats really are the best!! Little void critters make the best friends. πŸ₯°

Just a head's up, Jude also has frequently dilated pupils, and his vet said he has cataracts. Apparently, there isn't much to be done for cat cataracts.

That's specifically what I'd brought up to her, but she just said the only thing she sees going on with his eyes is some pigmentation. πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ I wouldn't be surprised, though.
