Hi all,

My 9 year old orange tabby was just diagnosed with diabetes and it has been really overwhelming. He’s been hospitalized twice now - first due to DKA and then again last night due to hypoglycemia after we increased his insulin dose. I’m bleeding money and just eager to get him stable cause I’m so worried about him. Please tell me it gets better? I’m in the Boston area and looking for any support and recommendations. I originally had him go for follow up with his regular vet after the first hospitalization but now I’m wondering if I should have the internist at the hospital follow him. I originally decided against that because of cost. If anyone has recs for care in Boston please let me know. Pics of Cheddar are attached. He’s the sweetest.

Welcome Cate to FDMD, it is overwhelming mentally and financially, when we find out our fur baby is diagnosed with Feline Diabetes, but not to worry, it is manageable, I have a feeling that you are not home testing, this is very important, One should never give a cat insulin without checking the glucose level, it is just like a human that has diabetes, this avoids hypoglycemia and many other complications, also a diabetic cat needs to have a diet of wet can food between 0-10% carbs, most members use Fancy Feast or Friskies's pates, cats cannot digest carbs, so their pancreas stop producing the insulin therefore becoming diabetic, kibbles and free feeding is usually one of the main factors for FD, kibbles contain anywhere from 20-30% carbs. We would like to know more about your beautiful orange Tabby, what insulin you are giving, dose, food etc. We would like you to create your signature, and since we are very numbers oriented so we would need you to home test and create a spreadsheet, below are the links, Our cats can be regulated and live a full life with correct diet and home testing, and no need for so much spending, you can purchase a human glucose monitor like the ReliOn Premier and strips, very inexpensive at Walmart, mot members use it, the monitor is $19.99 and the strips are $9.00 for 50 and $17.88 for 100, good to have plenty especially when testing for the first time, Please create your signature, and get the ReliOn, so we can begin to help your precious fur baby regulated, below are4 the links,
If you are feeding kibbles, is important to know that the transition from dry to wet needs to be done slowly, so first things first, lets get to know you: in the main forum you will find sticky notes with a lot of valuable information

Is your cat at Angell? Or somewhere else? I can recommend a very good vet. Please PM me.

It looks like your cat has the Libre meter on. Is testing from the ear too difficult? As far as I know, the Libre meter sends readings to an app on a phone and it will alert you if numbers drop too low. @Staci & Ivy please confirm.

When was insulin started and at what dose? What is the name of the insulin? What was the dose of insulin that put your at into hypoglycemia? Did you try to treat at home before going to the vet?

Yes, managing your cat's diabetes does get easier after the initial shock and learning everything.

Oh my goodness, did not notice the sensor, awesome!! Sorry Cate , thanks Squeem3

Yes you are correct, the Libre 3 sends readings to my personal phone with the Libre Linkup App (cat’s phone “reads” the sensor and sends data from their phone app to my phone app).
