? 22/8 Shakti- skipped due to low values in the night -- Urgent dosing question for PM shot in 30 mins

Hi all,

Confusing situation is still confusing.
We skipped today because her dose is drop and she had values of around 45 for a part of the night (see chart). We weren't home part of the day so figured it would be safer that way- and there is nothing left to reduce! But now she is up again.
what to do? Give her once per 24 hrs? Stop insulin for a bit and see if it stabilizes? Half the drop?? Help appreciated.

I'm feeding low carb and 4.5%- but even on insulin I feel like she's quite food reactive and if she has too much of the higher carb food she gets very high at times :/
Can you find a higher carb food to give her as Elise suggested?
If you can’t find 9%, you could always take an even higher carb (if you find that) and combine it with your 4.5%.
For example, if you found a 14% food combined equal parts with your 4.5%, that would give you 18.5% carbs.
You then divide by 2 and that would be your carbs for the mixture of foods (9.25%).

I'm currently looking at the UK food list to try and figure this out. We just payed a lot of money for a subscription for LC 100% meat foods.. perhaps we can mix them, so it won't go to waste.

Though, I have the food I gave her before the diet switch and it is 34% carb- but it is dry food and I am afraid it will worsen her. Perhaps I should get the 9% Bozita chunks online and see if I can mix it with the 2.5% Carny and Almo Nature that is currently her main food.. it will take some days to get it though

I have one question about this though- having also read through the thread about food and insulin curves:
Isn't the whole point to eventually get her off insulin with low carb food? Would this not defeat the purpose, giving her more carbs that are more taxing for her body?

Also: What should I do tonight, because I have the HC kibble but I do not have other stuff yet. Also... she ripped off the Libre again- we have to place a new one again as soon as we have time. (The shirt stresses her out immensely so at this point we're just trying to get her to accept the Libre and regular ear pricks.
Is it best to continue drop and mix HC kibble with LC wet food for now? See what it does to her sugars?

I would post a question in your title to ask for dose and food help for tonight.

Do you have any local pet stores to get some higher carbs tomorrow?

I do have a pet store very nearby but all of their wet food is low carb or like 5% :( I asked because I was already looking for higher carb snacks and foods. There was someone there who went through them with me and calculated the carbs for me but that was really the most they had.

ETA it is possible that my local Lidl has the pate they mention in the UK food list, I'll check that out- but it does contain "various sugars"

While some cats do well on a very low carb diet others need some carbs. You don’t want to feed 34% but under 10% is still lc. It may seem counterintuitive but you sometimes need more carbs to keep a cat surfing in normal numbers and need to increase the insulin to get your cat used to normal numbers and stop the bouncing. Let me see if I can find a good post on this.

Those low numbers are with the Libre which can read too low in low numbers. Can you set an alarm to check with the handheld? That was a huge jump. This ss does not look like a cat ready to be diet controlled. You need food around 7-9% to try and see if you can stop the lows. I don’t know what to say about tonight especially since all you have is lc and 34%.

Yes this happens constantly. Her responses to insulin are very strong. I'm going to the supermarket tomorrow to get some of that 7.4% Coshida and I hope she will want to eat it, too.

I have 30%, 34%, 4.5% and 2,5%. Perhaps I can mix something?
I do have to mention I cannot afford to lose sleep to often. I have a chronic illness I have to be very careful about. In an emergency I can hack it but it can break me for days if I mess up my sleep..

You need to find a slightly higher food and probably feed it at all meals so that you can stop the big drops and lows and keep surfing 50-120 by feeding that food. I’ve seen this work in the past. Stopping insulin when not regulated will most likely lead to her returning with a much higher dose. You want a strong remission. It might also require messing with your sleep and setting alarms for checks at night. Cats often drop lower at night so might need to be fed to prevent that. It’s a lot of work but the benefits usually make it worthwhile.

Hi Fae!

Absolutely! You must take care of YOU in order to take care of Shakti! So you're wise to try to find a way to balance both your health and hers.

Here is a copy of your signature from the old site; please add it here (you can copy/paste) on this site (note, I made some changes to eliminate unnecessary information (like dosing info, which is on the spreadsheet)--please feel free to customize this to your preference):

Fae (human) and Shakti ~ Dx 17 Jun 25 ~ immediate diet change 18/7 to wet food meats diet ~ TR ~ Lantus ~ Freestyle Libre, and when necessary with Diatesse XPER ~ Based in the Netherlands ~ Shakti's spreadsheet

I think that spreadsheet link might work, but you'll need to test it.

PLEASE DISREGARD! I just realized that I couldn't see ANYONE'S signatures, and I checked my preferences, and I somehow turned off the option that allowed me to see signatures. :woot:🤦‍♀️Sorry.
