Warning: venting and I have the flu

Yesterday Minky needed no insulin. Her numbers were too low (please don't judge). I made the very bad mistake of giving her Dr. Elsey's chicken dry food last night because I have to find something she can snack on while I am not home so she doesn't go back into dka. Her numbers had all been under 113 all day with her regular low-carb food. I also have the flu and was under two blankets freezing having to get up every few hours and feel horrid. She is back to 228 this morning. I feel like a horrible cat mom and am so mad I tried something new. Why is everything about this stupid disease so hard??? Thank you for letting me vent.

:bighug::bighug:

You can leave canned food out for snacking. Most people use a programmable timed feeder for this purpose. If your cat needs crunchies, try air dried raw or freeze dried raw which are lower in carbs and healthier alternatives than the "good" dry foods.

Her numbers yesterday are good :) A green start and some blues. The 123 at PMPS was fine to give insulin. What is the current dose? It looks like you're giving varying doses every few days if not every day?

Hope the flu doesn't last too long:bighug: Being sick is no fun at all.

If I give her even .25 right now she can go down 40 to 50 points in 4 to 5 hours which is when I come home to test her (only home for 25 minutes but have another sick kitty and am trying to get a third kitty to eat). I cannot leave any food out due to one cat's really bad food allergies. I thought the Dr. Elsey's food would work but she really spiked. Also I tried the Sure Feed tag on Minky (the diabetic cat) yesterday and she hated the dangling tag--I think because of her hyperesthesia :(

Ugh on the flu :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

Consistent dosing will really help us decide what her dose should be. It's OK to shoot a lower dose while you are sick, but please test for ketones if you can. 0.75 units is too much, pick either 0.5 or 0.25.

It's hard to make that claim when you have been mixing up the doses. The depot could be larger than 0.25 units.

If Minky is microchipped, I think you can program the Sure Feed to read her microchip instead of the Sure Feed tag

Typically microchipping is done at the vet or local shelter. They use a larger syringe to inject a rice grain sized chip into them. Where did you get Minky?

You can take her to the vet and have her microchipped. Many animal shelters will also offer microchipping. Please remember after she has been microchipped to go online and register her information. Then if she is ever lost and someone finds her, they are able to contact you.

I'm not sure what vets charge for microchipping. Sometimes vets or pet stores or shelters have free or low cost microchip events. Leroy his for free with his annual check up. Civvie already had a microchip when I adopted her. Registering the microchip with the microchip company is free. Just call up the company and give them your info. If you don't need the extra services the company offers (24/7 support, travel assistance to get your pet home, etc), decline them if the customer service rep tries to talk you into it. Those extra services cost money and it's a membership fee you get automatically charged for every year unless you call the company and tell them to end your membership. If you try to register the microchip online through the company's web site, there's no way to opt of of the additional services o_O

Yup. Ask your vet for what microchip company they use. Then go to that company's web site and read all the fine print in the FAQs and also double check Google reviews / Reddit threads / etc. Enrolling / registering your pet's unique microchip ID number with all of your contact info in their database costs nothing. I know that Home Again has this info hidden in their FAQ page but all you see on the main home page is "If your pet is microchipped but you have not enrolled, your pet is not fully protected! Enroll your pet today, just $19.99". And remember to call to update your information with a new address or phone number or email address.

Thank you so much for all of this information. I would have never guessed.
